『모르는 평범함』展은 천경우 작가의 대규모 개인전으로, 지난 15 년 동안 10 여 개국의 기관과 장소에서 행해졌던 그의 퍼포먼스들을 선별해 기획되었으며, 설치, 영상, 사진, 아카이브 등으로 구성된다. ● 현대미술에서 퍼포먼스란 '시간의 전개 속에서 예술가의 신체를 이용해 표현하는 행위를 일컬으며, 육체를 물질로 취급하거나, 의식적 형식과 연극적 요소가 짙은 것 '이라고 일반적으로 정의한다. 그러므로 대부분의 퍼포먼스는 예술가 자신이 주인공이 되어, 유별나고, 우스꽝스러운 행위를 하며 자신의 신체를 기묘하게 꾸미고 심지어 학대하는 장면을 연출하기도 한다. 반면 천경우의 퍼포먼스는, 작가는 아이디어를 제안하고, 다국적의 평범한 사람들이 실천자로 참여해 작가의 아이디어를 행동하며, 행동하는 중에 일어나는 자신의 의식적, 무의식적 행위들을 경험하게 하고 스스로를 변화시킬 수 있기를 지향한다.

이러한 예술창작의 '공동 작업방식'과 함께 두드러지는 천경우 작업의 또 다른 특징은 퍼포먼스 참여자들이 평범한 우리 주변의 보통사람들이라는 사실이다. 전통적 미술 개념에서 일반 대중은 예술의 주체라기보다는 들러리에 불과하였다. 대중은 예술가가 제공한 작품의 소비자 내지는 감상자이지 직접 예술 창작에 관여하지는 않았다. 그러나 천경우의 퍼포먼스를 실현하는 사람들은 작가도, 특별한 전문가나 사회적 명사, 유명 스타도 아닌, 오히려 미술의 단순한 소비자이거나 피동적 소재에 불과한 '보통 사람들'이다. 천경우의 퍼포먼스가 평범하고 단조롭기까지 한 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. 그리고 그들로 하여금 예술창작의 주체가 되도록 시도하며 온갖 종류의 문화를 수용하고, 사소한 일상이라도 가치부여의 매개체가 됨으로써 놀라운 소통의 힘을 발휘한다.

여기서 천경우의 사진 작업에 관해 언급하고자 한다. '초상사진' 작업으로 잘 알려진 천경우는 찰나를 잡아내는 초상 사진가와는 달리, 보통 수 분에서 수 시간 동안 장 노출로 촬영하며 그 대상의 진정한 모습을 담고자 한다. 그는 시간의 흐름 속에서만 인물의 내면이 어떤 형태로든 드러날 수 있다고 믿는다. 그러므로 천경우는 사진의 찰나적 프로세스를 다른 방식으로 받아들이고자 하는데, '사진의 순간'이란 그 시간 안에 이뤄지는 무수한 변화를 쌓아 나가는 출발점에 불과하다는 생각이며, '사진'은 대상의 한 순간을 포착하여 기록하는 것이 아니라, 대상을 탐사하고 발견해 나가는 도구로서 변화와 지속의 흔적이라는 것이다. 바로 이런 의미에서 천경우의 '퍼포먼스'는 '확장된 사진'이란 해석이 가능하다.

'보이지 않았던 것을 보이게 하기'가 현대미술의 목적이고 사명일 진데, 천경우는 보다 더 적극적인 방식으로 인간의 욕구를 어떻게 자극할 것인지 고민한다. 천경우가 자신의 예술 활동에서 부딪치고, 가장 많은 질문을 던진 것이 바로 이점이다. 그의 퍼포먼스에 참여한 사람들은 모두 자신 속에 깊이 잠재되어 있지만 평소에 활성화되지 못했던 진한 감정을 느꼈을 것이다. 이러한 예술적 지휘자의 입장과 작업은 현대인들의 잃어버리고 소외된 자아를 회복하기 위해 자신의 내면을 성찰하고, 원초적 감정과 기억들을 탐사하는 도구라 해도 과언이 아니다. 왜냐하면 예술창작이란 궁극적으로 자신의 내면을 성찰하는 작업이기 때문이다. 이제 천경우의 퍼포먼스에 참여한 개인들은 예술 창작에 참여함으로써 자신을 수동적 대상이 아닌 주체로서 발견하며, 그의 '퍼포먼스'가 세상과 타인들과 소통하는 장이었음을 경험한다. 천경우의 예술을 관람하는 사람들은 역시 스스로가 예술의 주체가 되어 자아를 재발견할 수 있는 치유의 효과를 만들어 내지 않을까? ■ 이수균

"Ordinary Unknown," a large-scale solo exhibition of the works of Kyungwoo Chun, was conceived as a selection of his performances which have been held at various institutes and venues in some ten countries over the past 15 years. The exhibition consists of installations, videos, photographs, and archives. ● In contemporary art, performance generally refers to "an expressive action using an artist's physical body in the flow of time, treating the physical body as material, or featuring strong ritual formalities and theatrical elements." Therefore, in most performances, the artist becomes the performer, playing out scenes where the body is cleverly manipulated through the performance of unique, ridiculous or violent actions. In Chun's performances, however, he proposes an idea of his own, and ordinary people of various cultural backgrounds attempt to act out that idea. ● Along with this collaborative working style, another distinguishing feature of Chun's performances is that the participants are actually just ordinary people, who surround us in our daily lives. In the conventional artistic sense, the general public have been consumers of art, not the agent of its creation. In other words, they have been consumers or appreciators of artworks provided by artists, not directly engaging in creating works of art. However, the people realizing Chun's performances are neither artists, distinguished experts, society figures, nor celebrities, but "ordinary people" who had previously been just the consumers of art or mere passive materials. This is why Chun's performances may seem ordinary, even monotonous. Moreover, as the participants are allowed to become the agent of artistic creation, they embrace all kinds of cultures, and as even their daily minutiae are rendered into a medium for assigning value, they demonstrate the amazing power of communication. ● At this point, Chun's photography work must be discussed. While other portrait photographers capture ordinary moments, Kyungwoo Chun, who is well known for his "photographic portraits," attempts to embody the true persona of the subject by contributing anything from a few minutes to a few hours to taking the subject's photo. According to Chun, only in the flow of time is the inner dimension of a person revealed in whatever form it may take. Thus, Chun's "photographic moment" is just a starting point for building a myriad of changes occurring within that time frame. In this sense, Chun's performances can be interpreted as a form of "expanded photography." His photos are not copies capturing a fixed image of a subject in the moment; rather, they must be viewed as the traces of both change and continuity as a means for the subject to explore and discover itself on its own. ● In this way, it is no exaggeration to say that Chun's artistic perspective and work are an instrument allowing modern individuals to reflect their own inner dimension while exploring raw emotions and memories in order to restore their lost, neglected ego. This is because artistic creation is ultimately to reflect one's own inner dimension. Thus, the individuals participating in Chun's "performances" become agents in the creative process by engaging in artistic creation, and embrace all kinds of cultures. And with the daily minutiae rendered into a medium for assigning value, they demonstrate the amazing power of communication. Moreover, in the process they realize that the performance was an arena where they communicated with the world. Therefore, Kyungwoo Chun's art has a healing effect helping ordinary people, who had previously been neglected as a subject, to rediscover their ego. ■ Soukyoun LEE
