정물Ⅰ_still remembering

세계 최초의 정물사진은 1827년 조셉 니세포르 니엡스(Joseph Nicephore Niepce)가 촬영한 '식탁'으로 알려져 있다. 사진의 탄생 초기에는 사진술이 많이 발달하지 못했기 때문에, 정지한 상태에서의 촬영이 용이한 정물사진이 꾸준히 제작되어 왔다. 유구한 회화의 역사에서 '정물화'가 하나의 장르로 자리잡기 시작한 것이 17세기 서구사회였던 점과는 다르게, 정물사진은 사진의 탄생과 동시에 시작된 셈이다. 급진적인 현대 사회의 변동과 과학기술의 발전에 가장 민감할 수밖에 없었던 사진의 역사 속에서 21세기 정물사진은 현재 어떤 모습일까? 이에 아트스페이스 J에서는 동시대 한국 정물 사진의 단면을 2회의 전시를 통해 살펴보고자 한다. ● 그 첫 번째 전시인 『정물Ⅰ_still remembering』은 '기억'에 관한 이야기다. 2017년 개봉했던 영화 '코코(Coco)'에서는 연옥과 같은 장소에서 살아가는 한 귀신의 입을 통해 이렇게 말한다. "이 지상에서 그 누구도 자신을 기억하지 못하는 순간이 오면 그땐 정말 사라지는 거"라고... 그 때가 진정한 의미에서의 죽음이란 얘기다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 네 작가, 구본창, 구성연, 이재용, 한옥란은 그들 특유의 방식으로 우리의 기억을 되살린다.

소중해서... ● "백자는 형태에서 시간을 담지 못하지만 비누는 점점 줄어들면서 형태에서도 시간을 담지요. 버리지 않고 쌓아두다 보니 이야기가 생기더군요. 소멸되면서 되레 축적되는 시간 외에 스스로 없어지면서 때를 벗겨내는 숭고함까지 생각하게 되었어요." (구본창)

그저 아름다워서... ● "예쁜의 의미는 우연히 나온 단어이지만, 그 단어는 우연이 아니었고 평소에 내가 원했던 부분이었던 것 같다. 꽃을 보며 느끼는 것보다는 꽃으로 인하여 내가 잠시 공간에서 활동을 하는 것이 아닌가 하는 착각을 할 정도로 집중하여 작업에 임한다" (한옥란)

덧없고 슬퍼서... ● "황금색으로 빛나고 황금처럼 반짝거리지만 설탕을 녹여 만든 이 장식품들은 애초에 그랬듯이 아무 기능도 없이 조명 아래 번쩍이며 한 장의 사진을 남기고 녹아 없어진다." (구성연)

시간의 켜를 찾아서... ● "유물에 관심을 가지게 된 이유는 소재를 선택할 때 기억을 가지고 있거나 시간성을 가진 것들에 접근하기 때문이다. 유물은 이미 변화를 많이 겪고 기억 혹은 시간성을 지니고 있기 때문에 선택하게 됐다" (이재용) ● 그들은 오래된 뮤직박스를 찾아내어 먼지를 털고 닦아 태엽을 감아주었고, 우리는 이제 그 옛 노래를 다시 듣는다. 다시 찾아와준 이 가을이 행복하지 않은가. ■ 아트스페이스 J

The first work of still life photography is credited to Joseph Nicephore Niepce's Set Table (1827). In the inception stage of the art of photography techniques were limited, and artists consistently created photographic artworks from still objects. Unlike the artistic genre of paintings where still life painting began to establish itself as a genre in the 17th century, the birth of the art of photography and the genre of still life photography came about simultaneously. Since its birth, how far has still life photography evolved through technological developments in the past three hundred years? Art Space J examines still life works by contemporary Korean photographers in a two-exhibition series. ● The first 『Still Life I - Still Remembering』 is a tale about memories. In the 2017 movie 'Coco,' there is a famous line by one ghost living in purgatory. "He's been forgotten. When there's no one left in the living world who remembers you, you disappear from this world. We call it the Final Death." The four artists participating in this exhibition, Bohnchang Koo, Seongyoun Koo, Jaeyong Rhee, and Okran Han, reminisce in his or her own way. ● Because It Is Noble. "Unlike 'Moon jar' which does not change over time, soap, in its shape, tells the tale of time. I think there is certain nobility in how the soap disappears over time by letting go its own layer after layer." (Bohnchang Koo) ● Because It Is Simply Beautiful. Although the meaning of 'beauty' is derived incidentally, I must have desired that word. Rather than simply appreciating the flowers, I work with such concentration that puts me into an illusive state where I feel guided, even controlled, by the flowers in my work space. (Okran Han) ● Because It Is So Pitiful. "The ornaments shine brightly under the lighting and radiate like gold. But they are only made from sugar and pitifully disappear after being photographed." (Seongyoun Koo) ● To Find Its Path of Time. "Artifacts carry memories with them. I became interested in working with them for their memories and possession of time. (Jaeyong Rhee) ● The four photographers dusted their old music box and turned the knob to play it. And we listen to their melodies, again. How pleasantly this autumn revisits us... ■ ART SPACE J
