Looking for Galatea

종이의 한 끝과 또 다른 한 끝이 만났다 헤어집니다. 다른 한끝과 또 다른 한 끝 역시 가까워졌다, 멀어졌다, 깊어졌다, 얕아졌다를 반복합니다. 한장의 맑고 투명했던 종이는 그렇게 주름을 부여받습니다. 본인이 원했던, 원하지 않았던, 그 종이는 누군가에 의해 혹은 무엇인가에 의해 하나, 둘, 셋, 계속 새로운 주름을 갖게 됩니다.

작가는 쏟아지는 기술의 발달로 세상이 편리해짐과 동시에 오히려 개인이 소외되는 아이러니한 상황에 주목합니다. 이렇게 소외된 개성들은 작가의 시간과 경험을 바탕으로 만들어진 '주름들'로 복원됩니다. 스스로를 다르게 질문할 수 있는 예술과 예술가의 가치 연구를 통해 작가는 피그말리온이 세상의 부조리에 대항하여 그만의 갈라테이아를 기다렸던 것처럼 새로운 동시대의 갈라테이아를 찾고자 합니다. ■ 충무로영상센터 오!재미동 갤러리 미술동네

Two opposite sides of a paper meet, create folds, and then separate. T he other facing ends repeat the same act: they go closer, and then further - deeper and shallower. Now the sheer paper is embedded with wrinkles. With or without will, the paper is left with folds created by a third party. ● The artist (Heejung Choi) grasps on the ironic nature of blurred individuality consumed by the world of convenience and developing technology. These neglected individuals are restored into the form of 'folds' shaped by the artist's time and and experience. ● Like Pygmalion who sought for his Galateia while struggling the absurdities of the world, the artist seeks her own Galateia in search of the value of art and artist, which also allows to observe themselves in a different point of view. ■ OHZEMIDONG GALLERY
