三國一漆 삼국일칠, 세 나라와 하나의 옻칠

한국, 중국, 일본은 가깝고도 먼 나라들이다. 지역적 인접성으로 많은 것을 공유하면서도 많은 갈등을 겪기도 하였다. 서로 다른 이해관계를 가지고 있는 3국이지만 '아름다움(美, Beauty)'을 고민하는 이라는 공통된 주제를 함께 고민하면서 소통의 미래를 열고자 한다. 옻나무의 원산지는 중앙아시아 고원지대로 알려져 있다. 옻나무과(科)의 식물은 전세계 60속(屬)의 600여 종류가 있으며, 중앙아시아 고원지대 이외에는 주로 열대 지방에서 자란다. 옻나무의 주요 생산지와 인접한 동북아 한·중·일 3국은 예로부터 옻칠예술의 교류와 경쟁을 통해 영향을 주고받았다. 3국은 옻칠이라는 자연의 선물을 통해 수많은 아름다운 문물과 의미 있는 옛 고사들을 공유하고 있다.

같으면서도 다르고, 다르면서도 같은 3국의 옻칠예술의 아름다움이 서로 연대하여 새로운 예술공동체의 길을 열고자 '세 나라와 하나의 옻칠 (Trilateral countries and one Lacquer Art)'이라는 뜻의 『三國一漆』의 전시를 개최하고자 한다. 전시제목은 TCS에서 발행한 '한중일 공동상용 808한자표(the 808 Commonly Used Chinese Characters in China, Japan, Korea)'의 한자와 3국에서 모두 옻칠을 뜻하는 '漆'을 더하여 만들었다. 3국에서 옻칠을 뜻하는 영어(Lacquer, Ottchil, japen, Urushi)는 각기 다르기 때문에 전시제목으로는 부적합하다고 생각하였으며, 이에 대한 논의는 아티스트 토크에서 이어가고자 한다. 본 전시는 단순히 삼국의 차이점이나 공통점을 논하는데 그치지 않고, 옻칠예술의 미래를 위해 한 발자국 나아가는 계기를 마련하는데 그 최종목표를 가지고 있다. ■ 조해리

Korea, China, Japan are nearby but far countries and unlike but alike. The three countries shared many things but also differences throughout history. Despite three different interests, the three countries decided to deal with a common subject, a beauty of Art, for the further collaboration. The origin of lacquer plant is known as highlands of Central Asia. There are 60 types of plants grouped to same botanical families with lacquer plant worldwide, mostly found in Central Asia or tropical regions. Since Korea, China, Japan are contiguous to lacquer plant area, they have nourished lacquer painting through interaction and competition. Gratitude to the gift of nature, three countries have developed precious and exquisite pieces of lacquer art work.

The exhibition 『三國一漆』, meaning 'Trilateral countries and one Lacquer Art', is looking forward to band the new artistic community with similarities and dissimilarities of the three countries. Although 漆 is a Chinese character, it seems more representative word than alternatives such as English letter: Lacquer, Ottchil or Urushi. The English term of 漆 is going to be further discussed in Artist Talk session. This exhibition finally aims for the stepping stone of future artistic movement, not just making a diagnosis of similarities and differences of three countries' current Lacquer Art. ■ CHOHAEREE
