주님께서 여러분과 함께

본 전시에서는 아이돌, 팬덤, 그리고 팬덤 스스로의 은닉이 사회 완연히 퍼져 있는 현상을 레이레 우르벨츠(Leire Urbeltz), 신재은, 손선경, 타오 후이(Tao Hui) 총 4명의 작가들을 통해 조명한다. 작가들은 아이돌과 팬덤이 얽혀 나타나는 최근의 현상에 대해 다양한 층위로 접근을 시도한다. 레이레 우르벨츠는 네온사인과 연꽃 이미지, 스티커 등을 통해 스페인 출신인 그의 눈에 비친 한국 남성 아이돌의 평균적인 모습을 성스러운 동시에 상업적으로 나타낸다. 그는 동시에 현 시대 '신'으로서의 아이돌이 SNS라는 통로를 통해 어떻게 신성화 혹은 도구화될 수 있는지, 양측 중 어느 쪽이 진짜인지에 대한 의문을 제기한다. 신재은은 아이돌이라는 우상에 대해 팬덤이 가지는 믿음의 결과로서 우상에 대한 '신화'가 만들어지는 과정을 사회 내 '괴담'의 생성 과정으로 은유하여 보여준다. 아이돌에 대한 '그럴 듯한' 내러티브는 믿음 체계를 공고히 하거나 혹은 외부의 체계를 무너뜨리기 위해 활용된다. 손선경은 팬들이 일상 속에서 지속하는 반복적인 믿음 행위를 애니메이션 영상을 통해 은유적인 도상으로 드러낸다. 여타의 배경 없이 흰 화면 내에서 움직이는 선으로 된 인물은 끊임없이 계속되는 단순한 행동을 계속한다. 아이돌에 대한 그들의 믿음 행위는 설사 아이돌에게 '미치지 못할' 지라도 정지없이 반복되고 있다. 타오 후이는 아이돌이 매체상에 '드러나는' 삶과 '살아가는' 삶의 대조점에 중점을 두고 작업한다. 최근 한국 아이돌 스타의 삶을 주제로 진행한 작업을 통해, 수 년 전까지도 신격화되었던 한국 아이돌이 SNS 등의 발전을 통해 팬덤들에게 있어서 같은 '사람'이라는 인식에 익숙해지기 시작한 현시점 팬덤의 모습을 담담히 그려내고 있다.

셀 수 없이 많은 아이돌이 한 주에도 수 팀씩 데뷔하고, 이제는 아이돌 연습생이 성장하는 과정을 지켜보며 대중 스스로 아이돌을 '만들어낼' 수 있는 상황이다. 아이돌 음악, 패션, 말투 등은 트렌드가 되어 팬덤을 넘어 대중 전체에 소화되고, 방송, 라디오, 인터넷까지 아이돌이 장악하고 있는 범위는 가늠하기 힘들 정도다. 그만큼 그들의 팬덤 역시 다양한 플랫폼을 통해 스스로를 드러내고 있으나, 아직까지도 '취미가 뭐에요?'라는 질문에 그들은 선뜻 '아이돌 팬질이요'라고 대답하지 못한다.

어쩌면 현 시점 가장 폭 넓게 퍼져있을 '우상'과 그들에 대한 '믿음'을 명확하지 않은 사회적 잣대로 짓눌렀던 것은 아닌지. 오히려 일상 속에서 꾸준히 개별의 신화를 구축해 그들의 우상을 섬기고, 동시에 그들의 인간으로서의 존재성을 존중해주는, 성숙한 구원을 영도하고 있는 것은 아닌지. 한번쯤 되짚어보는 지금, 주님께서 여러분과 함께 하길(Dominus Vobiscum). ■ 허남주

In this exhibition, Dominus Vobiscum, four artists –Leire Urbeltz, Jae eun Shin, Seon kyeong Son, and Tao Hui- deal with the theme of idol, fandom and the situation of self-concealing fandoms do. The artists step on diverse spectrums on recent phenomenon related to idols and fandoms now. Leire Urbeltz shows the average look of Korean boy groups with neon, lotus image, stickers in two ways of view-holly and commercial. She asks which of the aspect is real between sanctification and commercialization of the idol as 'god' now through SNS. Jae eun Shin shows the 'myth' of idols made by the belief of fandoms toward them metaphorically as 'rumors' created in societies. 'Plausible' narratives on idol can be used as strengthening belief- system in fandom or collapsing structures outside which are thought to be an enemy. Seon kyeong Son works on video animation which appears as repetitive acts of belief which keeps going in their routine. The person with simple line and white backgrounds keeps mere actions endlessly. Acts of their belief on idols goes on and on even those are not able to be seen to their idols. Tao Hui focues on the difference of 'shown' life on media and 'living' life in real of idols. Through the recent work on the life of Korean idol star, he shows the fandom now, here who got to know their idol is just the 'human' as they are mainly through SNS. And the performer Vita Mikju admires to be an idol in drag industry. Although a drag queen sounds like a completely different concept from an idol, Mikju genuinely provides idol reflection. This proves that an idol is constituted of set-ups, not like one being born as an idol. ● The debuts of idols now can not be counted as several teams come up even in a week and now we can 'make' the idol by ourselves by looking the idol trainees work on through TV shows. Idol music, fashion, way of speaking has been a trend are expended over fandoms to public just as trends and now it covers TV shows, radio, internet. Though the fandom shows themselves up via many platforms, they don't honestly answer to the question 'what's your hobby?' as 'I do Idol-fan-doings'. ● They might be pressed as social standards which doesn't clearly defy 'idol' and 'belief' of them even they are widely spread as general idol itself. ● They might preparing for 'mature salvation' both systemize each myth for their idols and respect their existence as human. And while you might review your thoughts of them, Dominus Vobiscum. ■ HUHNAMJOO
