ILLUSION OF TRANSPARENCY

20여년전 뉴욕의 작업실에서 우연히 한 구석에 놓인 작은 아크릴 구슬이 빛을 받아 다양한 색채를 발산하는 것을 보고 영감을 받았다. 내 작품은 콜라쥬 작업을 한 후 드로잉을 하거나 페인팅을 한 다음 투명한 구슬들을 촘촘히 몰려 놓음으로써 바닥의 형상이 구슬을 통해 보이게 하는 시각적 작품이다. 밑에 그려진 여러가지 형상이 구슬을 통과하면서 다양한 빛과 형태와 색채를 만들어 낸다. 지그재그로 화면에 붙은 구슬들은 다양한 색채와 형태가 한데 섞이는 느낌을 주고, 가지런히 정돈된 구슬들은 자체로 깔끔한 색체덩어리가 된다. ● 구슬에 투영된 시각적 환영을 통해 색채의 다양한 변주와 이미지의 변형이 가능한 것이 무엇보다 내가 이 구슬 작업을 재미있게 할 수 있는 원동력이다. ● 내가 선택한 구슬이라는 소재는 내 자신의 눈을 의심하면서 시작된 것이다. 구슬에 투영된 이미지가 사실은 왜곡되고. 실제의 이미지와 다르다는 것을 깨닫는 것도 관객들이 보는 하나의 놀람과 즐거움이 되기를 바란다. 또한 보는 각도에 따라 색이 바뀌고 구슬에 투영된 글자가 변화하는 감각적인 경험을 하게 되기를 바란다. I started the beads works 20 years ago at my studio in New York where I was inspired to see when the light shines to small acrylic bead and it emits a variety of colors. My works display the modified images by installing the object of beads over planes covered with collage and colors. The use of beads enables diverse variation of colors and modification of images. Although all forms, texts and colors become confined within each bead, the work as a whole becomes consisted of the combinations of colors and forms of each bead. The image of the works as a whole more diversely varies and is more dynamic than the parts and individual elements. The zigzag marbles on the screen give a mixture of various shapes and colors, and the aligned beads themselves become neat color chunks. ● It was my driving force that can make this bead work more interesting for the possibility of various variations of color and image transformation through the visual illusion on the bead. ● The material that I chose was started by suspicion of my own eyes. I hope it is also a surprise and pleasure for the audience to realize that the projected image on the bead is actually distorted and different from the actual image. I also hope that the audience has a sensual experience ofthe color changes according to the viewing angle and that the projected letters on the beads change. ■ Jong Rim Song
