Decision Forest

아모레퍼시픽미술관은 『Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Decision Forest』展으로 용산 신축본사 내에 마련된 새로운 전시공간의 문을 연다. 개관전의 작가인 라파엘 로자노헤머는 멕시코 태생의 캐나다 출신 작가로 90년대부터 대형 인터렉티브 공공 프로젝트를 통해 일상의 공간에서 많은 사람들과 교감해왔다.

이번 전시는 1992년도 초기작 「Surface Tension」부터 세상에 첫 선을 보이는 신작을 포함하여 작가의 26년간의 작업 세계를 조망하는 첫 번째 아시아 회고전이자 작가의 최초 한국 개인전으로, 한국에서 보기 드물었던 대규모 인터렉티브 미디어 전시란 점에서 의의가 있다. 로자노헤머의 주요 프로젝트 24개, 총 29 작품이 데이비드 치퍼필드가 설계한 건물의 아트리움부터 미술관 로비, 지하의 6개 전시장의 다양한 공간에 맞춰 새롭게 프로그래밍되어 관람객을 맞이한다.

이번 전시를 위해 새롭게 제작된 5점의 작품 중 미술관 로비에 달린 지름 3미터의 거대한 3D 원형 조각 「Blue Sun」은 지난 10년간 태양에 대해 NASA와 작가가 협업한 결과물이다. 아트리움의 「Mapped Han」은 VR 체험을 통해 거대한 노출 콘크리트의 공간이 '강'과 관련된 텍스트의 구조물로 변화되는 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 22점의 작품은 기술적으로 업그레이드되어 아시아에서 처음 선보인다. 그 중에서 지하 전시장의 첫번째 작품인 「Sand Box」는 미국 LA의 산타 모니카 해변에서의 공공프로젝트를 실내로 옮겨와 거대한 인공 해변에서 관람객들이 서로 어우러지며 한바탕 '놀이'에 참여할 수 있게 하였다. 전시된 모든 작품들은 키네틱 조각, 생체측정 설치작품, 사진, 상호반응 우물, VR, 나노기술, 사운드 환경 등 다양한 분야의 최첨단 기술을 바탕으로 구현되었다. 우리의 일상을 둘러싼 뉴스, 문학, 취조실 거울, CCTV와 같은 감시장치 등을 작품의 내용을 구성하며, 맥박, 목소리, 지문, 초상, 발화시 공기의 파장, 인체의 움직임, 상대방과의 거리 등 우리의 몸과 움직임이 인터페이스로 활용된다.

전시의 제목 『Decision Forest』는 컴퓨팅과 데이터과학의 용어이지만 이번 전시와 관련해서는 관람객의 선택 및 상호작용에 따라 얻을 수 있는 결과의 값들을 의미하기도 한다. 그리고 통제할 수 없는 대중의 본성, 불완전한 지각의 과정, 불확실하고 규정되지 않은 공간에서 발휘되는 창의성 같은 개념의 집합이기도 하다. 전시된 작품들은 관람객 스스로 참여 여부를 결정하고 그 결과에 따라 달라진 상황 및 상태로 존재하며, 관람객이 주인공이 되어 만들어가는 창의적 소통의 플랫폼이 되어 준다. ● 아모레퍼시픽미술관은 『Decision Forest』를 통해 관람객이 직접 작품에 참여하면서 지금까지 느끼지 못했던 특별한 감각적 경험을 하기를 기대한다. 아울러, 작품들이 전달하는 사람을 향한 따뜻한 시선과 상호작용의 과정을 통해 열린 소통의 가치와 대중과 함께 호흡하고자 하는 미술관의 방향성을 전달하고자 한다. ■ 아모레퍼시픽미술관

Unveiling its brand-new exhibition space inside the new corporate headquarters of Amorepacific Corporation in Yongsan, Amorepacific Museum of Art proudly presents its opening exhibition, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Decision Forest. Since the early 1990s, the Mexican-Canadian media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has been dazzling people around the world with his enormous interactive installations in public spaces. ● This will be Lozano-Hemmer's first solo exhibition in Korea and his first retrospective exhibition in Asia, encompassing early works such as Surface Tension (1992) to his latest creations, which will be presented for the first time. This event has special significance for Korean audiences, who have rarely had the chance to experience an exhibition of interactive media on such a large scale. A total of twenty-nine of Lozano-Hemmer's works (representing twenty-four of his major projects) have been newly programmed to inhabit various exhibition spaces in the building (designed by David Chipperfield), including the Atrium, the museum lobby, and six galleries in the basement level. ● From kinetic sculptures to biometric installations, from interactive well to digital sound environments, all of the exhibited works employ cutting-edge technological advancements in virtual reality, nanotechnology, and other areas to provide an array of unforgettable experiences. In addition to themes from literature and philosophy, Lozano-Hemmer's art often addresses the ubiquity of news, media, and surveillance, sometimes by incorporating one-way mirrors or CCTV. Using people's bodies and movements as a direct interface, his works may respond to faces, voices, heartbeats, or the distance between people. ● Decision Forest is a term from computing and data science. In this exhibition, it refers to the numeric values generated by visitors' choices and interactions, but also alludes to other concepts, such as the uncontrollable nature of the public, our partial processes of perception, and the creativity that may emerge from uncertain or undefined space. Notably, all of the exhibited works exist as variable situations or conditions that depend entirely upon the visitors' decision to participate and level of participation. Indeed, the true genius of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's art is to provide a platform for interaction, through which each person becomes the protagonist capable of creating her or his own unique experience. ● With such an unprecedented collection of innovative and interactive artworks, Decision Forest is sure to provide visitors with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
