누크갤러리는 이영하 개인전 『건축적 이미지』를 개최합니다. 이 전시는 보이지 않는 곳에서 꾸준히 작업해온 중간 작가를 재조명하는 취지로 기획된 전시입니다. 이영하는 『건축적 이미지』를 주제로 섬유예술과 프린팅 등 다양한 장르를 아우르는 작업을 해왔습니다. 작가는 오랜 작업의 경험으로 수많은 층을 쌓아가는 섬유예술작업을 선보입니다. 작품 속에 숨겨진 섬세한 작가의 이야기를 통해 오랜 시간 작업해온 작가의 울림을 느껴보시길 바랍니다. ■ 누크갤러리

나를 둘러싼 주변은 익숙하고 친밀감을 주면서도 한편으로는 매우 낯설다. 나는 이러한 세계와 소통하려고 몸부림치고 있다. 매일 보는 생활환경은 우리 눈에 익숙하여 아무런 감명을 주지 못하지만, 그 안의 기하학적 도형은 인간 내면에서 사고 되는 도형이므로 공상적이고 친숙하지 않은 것이다. 도시의 유형은 이미 우리들의 삶의 일부분이 되어있어서, 아무런 의미 없이 다가 오지만, 도시안의 자연의 세계는, 우리에게 낯 설음과 미지의 세계에 대한 호기심을 불어넣어 준다. 모든 사람들은 자연 속에서 살고 있으며, 도시의 건축물을 통하여 자연과 소통하고 있다는 사실을 잊고 있다. ● 나의 건축적 이미지 연작은 밀집된 고층빌딩의 숲이라는 도시적 이미지의 세계이다. 그 도시 속에 응집된 현대적 삶의 표상이다. 나는 대도시 고층건물에 살면서 우리 삶의 이중성을 알게 되었다. 화려한 건물외부와 달리 숨겨진 뒷골목, 건물의 옥상의 복잡한 속에는 외부에 나타내고 싶은 것과 감추고 싶은 것이 있다. 즉 낭만적인 아름다움, 또한 마음속의 힘든 인내하는 감추어진 부분들, 나는 이러한 양면성을 건물의 구조 이미지를 통하여 표현하고자 하였다.

건물과 건물이 서로 단절된 것같이 보이면서도 서로 연결되어, 삶의 본연의 모습을 보여준다. 전체적으로 밭 (Grid) 구성은 건축물 내의 격자와 중층을 반영하고, 창문을 통한 복잡한 세상사의 단면을 보여주고 있다. 인간은 언제부터 직선을 연결하여 삶의 공간을 만들었을까? 우리는 왜 박스형 공간에서 안정감을 느끼는 것인가? 현실적인 이유로 박스형 공간은 만들기가 용이하지만, 임의의 모양의 생활공간은 구조적 안정성과 그 사용이 어려울 수가 있다. 즉 편이성에 의하여 우리들은 직선 문화에 익숙해진 것인지 모르겠다. 이러한 제약이 따르더라도, 인간의 감정은 무한히 변할 수 있다. 안정적, 편안함, 행복함을 느끼는 사람과, 불안하고, 힘들며, 괴로워하는 사람들이 건물 속에 있다. ● 나는 건물이라는 생활 공간이 꼭 물리적인 성질만 가졌다고 생각하지는 않는다. 도시와 건물 이미지는 인간이 만든 구조물에는 틀림이 없지만, 아무도 모르는 사이에 생활하는 공간과 건물에 그들의 혼이 들어가는 것이다. 내가 표현한 나의 공간 이미지를 나도 잘 설명하지 못할 수 있다. 그 이유는 나의 정신세계 (이성과 관념이 지배하는 세계)에 대한 보이지 않는 감정과 영혼이 작품에 들어가기 때문이다. ■ 이영하

My surroundings are familiar and friendly on one hand, but very strange on the other. I struggle to communicate with such a world. The environment we live in and see every day is familiar to our eyes and gives us no special impression; however, the geometrical shapes in it are shapes that live and become inside us humans, and are therefore imaginary and unfamiliar. The types of cities are already a part of our lives and seem meaningless, but the world of nature within the city gives us the sense of strangeness and curiosity for the unknown world. People forget that they all live in nature, and they are in fact communicating with nature through urban architectural structures. ● My series of architectural images portray a world of urban images—a forest of dense high-rise buildings. They are representations of contemporary life condensed in that city. While living in a high-rise building in a large city, I became aware of the duality of our lives. Unlike the fancy exterior of buildings, there are desires to express and desires to hide inside the hidden back allies and complexity of the rooftops of buildings. I wanted to express the ambivalence of romantic beauty, and the hidden emotions of hardship and endurance deep inside, through the images of architectural structures. ● Buildings that appear to be mutually cut off are actually connected, thus showing the natural state of life. The overall grid composition reflects the sections and layers of the building, and shows a cross-section of the complicated world through windows. Since when did humans connect straight lines to build their living spaces? Why do we feel stability in box-shaped spaces? For realistic reasons box-shaped spaces are easy to make, while living spaces of random shape may lack structural stability or be difficult to use. That is to say, perhaps we became accustomed to the culture of straight lines due to convenience. Despite such limitations, human emotions can change infinitely. There are people feeling stability, comfort and happiness, as well as those who are feeling uneasiness, difficulty and suffering inside the building. ● I do not believe that the living space called the building only has physical properties. While there is no doubt that the city and buildings are structures made by humans, without them knowing, their spirits enter the spaces and buildings they live in. Sometimes I am unable to provide a good explanation for the images of space I express. That is because invisible emotions concerning my mental world (world dominated by reason and ideas) and my soul enter the works. ■ LEEYOUNGHA
