미국과 차별성을 가지며 독자적인 길을 모색하던 프랑스의 70년대에 파리에서 태어나 90년대에 뉴욕에서 유학을 하고, 스페인 바르셀로나에 위치한 작업실에서 화가로서의 정체성을 찾고, 현재는 파리에 거주하며 작업 중인 밀라 라이츠(Mila Lights)는 자신이 살아온 인생만큼이나 복잡하고 다양한 창작 과정과 매체를 통해 예술이 어떻게 문화적 교류에 기여할 수 있는지 연구하는 작가이다. 그녀는 가수 겸 싱어송m 라이터, 모델, 조각가, 시인으로 활동한 경력이 있으며 지금은 회화에 전념하고 있다.

프리마 발레리나 겸 화가였던 어머니와 철학을 사랑한 아버지, 바이올리니스트 형제까지 아티스트 집안에서 태어난 그녀는 어린 시절부터 자연스럽게 예술적 재능을 발휘할 수 있는 환경에서 자랐다. 뉴욕에서는 배우 학교를 졸업한 당찬 연기자 지망생으로서 브로드웨이 뮤지컬에 캐스팅되기도 했고, 솔로 앨범을 두 차례에 걸쳐 발매하며 월드 투어를 다닌 가수로서 영국의 웸블리 경기장 무대에서 노래를 하기도 했다. 이러한 행로 덕분에 음악은 그녀의 작품 속에서 핵심적인 요소이자 영감의 원천이 되었다.

본 전시는 밀라 라이츠가 화가로서의 활동을 본격적으로 시작한 2009년부터 지금까지 이어져 온 그녀의 작품 세계를 소개하고자 마련되었다. 작업실을 가득 메우는 음악 소리를 들으며 하얀 캔버스 앞에 서면 자기도 모르게 그림을 그리게 된다는 작가는, 마치 음악가 닐 영(Neil Young)이 Heart of Gold라는 곡을 단 두 번 만에 녹음했듯이, 특유의 거침없고 빠른 동작으로 각각의 작품을 완성해 나간다. 때로는 붓보다 마음이 앞서 몸을 이용하거나 손에 닿는 물건을 집어 물감을 찍어 바르다 보면 순간의 본능적 충동과 주체할 수 없는 감정들이 겹겹이 쌓인 반죽 같은 물감 속에 고스란히 녹아들어 보는 이의 가슴을 울리는 추상화가 되기도 한다. 손바닥 모양이나 발자국, 페인트 통 뚜껑 등이 작가의 현실적인 작업 과정을 연상시키기도 하지만, 그녀의 전반적인 작업 스타일은 지극히 회화적(스위스의 미술 역사가인 하인리히 뵐플린(Heinrich Wölfflin)이 회화 특유의 추상적인 형태, 임파스토, 색채의 대비 또는 연속성을 나타내기 위해 사용한 malerisch라는 용어의 번역)이며, 각각의 작품마다 개성이 강해 전체적인 일관성보다는 의도적 과잉과 불규칙성이 강조되는, 미국의 미술사학자 켈리 웨커(Kelly A. Wacker)가 짚어낸 '현대 미술의 바로크적 경향'을 유감없이 드러낸다.

끊임없이 변화하고 있는 밀라 라이츠의 작품세계를 어느 한 예술적 경향으로 분류하기는 쉽지 않다. 그녀는 다양한 매체의 물질성에 집중하면서 뚜렷한 선의 제약과 명확한 형태로부터 고의적으로 탈출하고자 함과 동시에 마치 어린아이가 장난을 치듯 손과 발로 자국을 남기고 자신의 스튜디오에서 찾은 페인트 통 등을 이용해 누구나 알아볼 수 있는 흔한 요소들도 캔버스에 그려 넣는다. 이렇듯 세련된 예술적 의도와, 장난스러운 아이와 같은 쾌활함의 조합은 밀라 라이츠만의 매력으로 작품 속에서 표출된다. 그녀가 다양한 도구와 붓을 활용하는 모습은 자연스러우면서 즉흥적이고, 그녀가 늘 강조하는 삶의 태도인 감사하는 마음과 너그러움, 즐거움을 전해준다. ■ 하민

Born in the seventies and currently based in Paris, Mila Lights is a French artist who explores the effect of an interdisciplinary process of creation, combining different media and triggering cultural exchanges. Singer songwriter, sculptor, poet and painter are some of the many titles we can give her. Coming from a family of musicians and artists (her mother was a prima ballerina and a painter and her brother is a violinist) she was naturally encouraged to follow her artistic penchant as a child, and grew up to become an aspiring student in an acting school in New York, then a Broadway musical cast member, before releasing two solo albums as a singer. This is why, when she decided to fully dedicate herself to painting, auditory input remained an essential source of inspiration and often a core element of her work. ● The exhibition Heart of Gold presents a series of abstract paintings that Mila has been working on since 2009, the beginning of her career as a painter. She says that she is often driven by the music that floods her studio when working on a blank canvas. And just as Musician Neil Young's Heart of Gold was recorded in just two takes, Mila's swift, bold and unfaltering application of paint conveys the full extent of excitement and rush of inspiration in the moment of unhindered creation. She proceeds with unwavering optimism and complete focus on her work as she throws herself onto the canvas, sometimes quite literally, daring to reveal her deepest emotions and instinctive outbursts of spontaneous feelings and thoughts through color and impasto. Although she sometimes introduces linear elements in her paintings, her overall style is painterly(translated from the term malerisch (painterly), a word popularized by Swiss art historian Heinrich Wölfflin(1864–1945) referring to a certain way of using paint to produce or enhance the visual effects of sketchiness, impasto, chromatic contrast or progression.) and arguably conveys what has been qualified as a 'baroque tendency of contemporary art' by American art historian Kelly A. Wacker. ● It is difficult however, to simply place Mila's wildly evolving work in one category of artistic movement. While she chooses to explore the materiality of different media with the deliberate desire to break free from restricting lines and clearly defined figures, she also playfully introduces conventional and recognizable elements such as her hand and footprints and traces made with various materials from her studio (empty pots of paint or circular lids). Such combination of apparent light-heartedness and refined artistic intent is what introduces Mila's "charm" into her work. The way she handles different tools and brushes seem effortless and unpremeditated, an attitude which echoes the very way she claims to handle life as it comes; with gratitude, generosity and gaiety. ■ HA Min
