서울 – 페이스 갤러리는 리차드 터틀의 신작들로 국내 최초 개인전을 개최한다. 선, 부피, 색체, 질감, 모양과 형태 연구로 널리 알려진 작가의 실습을 이어가는 작품들로 구성된 『리차드 터틀: 나무에 대한 생각들』전은 용산구 이태원로 262에서 2018년 3월 9일부터 5월 12일까지 전시된다. 작가와 함께하는 오프닝 리셉션은 목요일 3월 8일 저녁 5시에서 7시까지 열린다. ● 터틀의 전반적인 작품세계와 맥락을 함께하는 그의 신작 「나무의 대한 생각들」은 23개의 작품으로 구성된다. 이는 페인팅, 드로잉, 조각, 그리고 아쌍블라주 사이에 속하며 흔히 사용되는 일상적인 소재들의 아름다움을 드러낸다. 이번 전시에 선보이는 연작에서 작품의 부수적 요소로 보이는 그림자나 선은 작가가 창작 과정 중 고의적으로 의도한 것으로서 결과물에서 신중하게 보여진다. 본 전시에서 찾아 볼 수 있듯이, 작품과 공간 사이의 관계 그리고 규모는 작가의 주요 관심사이다. 작품들의 재료와 설치는 항상 연관되어 있으며 터틀은 끊임 없이 관람자의 미적 경험을 인지하고 있다. ● "리차드 터틀의 국내 최초 개인전이자 그의 아름다운 신작 「나무에 대한 생각들」연작을 소개하게 되어 매우 행복합니다. 작가는 현대 예술 계에서 가장 중요한 인물로 손꼽히며 지난 50년간의 저명한 작가생활을 통해 다양한 매체로 섬세하게 제작된 작업들로 널리 알려져 있습니다." – 이영주, 페이스 갤러리 디렉터 - ● 본 전시 즈음하여 터틀은 시를 공유했다: 나무에 대한 생각들 / 은 우리에게 준다 – 온전한 / 기운, 평화 / 사랑, 내부의 고용함 ● 『리차드 터틀: 나무에 대한 생각들』전은 2017년 3월에 페이스 갤러리 서울지점 개관 이후 다섯 번째 전시이며 페이스에서 열리는 작가의 여덟 번째 개인전이다. 서울에서 열리는 이번 전시와 같은 시기에 페이스 갤러리 홍콩지점은 홍콩 H Queens 건물에 두 번째 지점을 개관한다. 개관을 맞이하여 저명한 일본 작가 요시토모 나라 개인전의 오프닝이 2018년 3월 26일에 열릴 예정이다. ● 리차드 터틀 (1941년 뉴저지 태생)은 현재 생존하고 있는 현대미술에서 가장 중요한 작가 중 한명이다. 그는 1960년대 중반부터 역사적 또는 시류에 국한되지 않은 다양한 작업을 창조했다. 겉으로 보기에 간단히 배치된 듯 한 사물과 몸짓들은 사실상 재료와 경험에 대한 터틀의 세심한 신경을 반영한다. 터틀은 선, 모양, 색채와 공간을 중심으로 구성된 창작들의 수공의 특성을 수용함으로, 미니멀리즘의 합리성과 명확함을 거부한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 작가는 자신의 작업 매체에 지정된 명칭을 피하며 조각, 회화, 콜라주, 설치 또는 아쌍블라주로 부를 수 있는 것을 포괄하기 위해 주로 드로잉이라는 용어를 사용한다. 재료, 매체와 수법의 전형적인 제약을 뒤엎으며, 터틀의 작품들은 관람자의 감각을 일깨워 준다. 하나의 시리즈에서 그 다음 시리즈가 자연스럽게 탄생되는 그의 작업 방식은 한 물체의 온전한 전부를 표현하고자 하는 일관된 탐색으로 결합된다. ● 터틀은 뉴욕 휘트니 미술관 (1975년)과 샌프란시스코 현대미술관 (2005년) 등 해외 주요 미술관에서 개인전과 순회전을 가졌다. 2014년에는 런던 테이트 미술관 터빈 홀에서 개인전을 개최하며 동시에 화이트채플 갤러리에서 그의 섬유 작업들도 선보였다. 그의 작품들은 뉴욕 현대미술관, 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 파리 퐁피두 미술관, 워싱턴 스미스쏘니언, 미국 국립 미술관, 런던 테이트 미술관, 뉴욕 휘트니 미술관 등 수 많은 세계 주요 미술관에 소장되어 있다. ● 리차드 터틀은 메인 주 마운트 데저트, 뉴 멕시코 주 애비퀴우, 그리고 뉴욕에 거주 하며 작업한다. ■ 페이스 갤러리

Seoul – Pace Gallery is pleased to present a new body of work by Richard Tuttle in the artist's first exhibition in South Korea. On view March 9 – May 12, 2018 at Itaewon-ro 262, Yongsan-gu, the works in Richard Tuttle: Thoughts of Trees continue the renowned American artist's ongoing investigation of line, volume, color, texture, shape, and form. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, March 8, from 5 – 7 p.m. ● As with Tuttle's practice as a whole, the 23 works in Thoughts of Trees occupy a space between painting, drawing, sculpture, and assemblage and draw beauty out of traditionally humble materials. In this series, Tuttle brings a quietly deliberate approach to art-making, in which every seemingly incidental shadow or line is judiciously intended. As demonstrated in this exhibition, spatial relationships and scale are central concerns for the artist and the works' materials and presentation are always interrelated, with Tuttle consistently maintaining an acute awareness for the viewer's aesthetic experience. ● Youngjoo Lee, Director of Pace Gallery in Seoul, shared: "We are thrilled to present Richard Tuttle's first solo exhibition in South Korea with his beautiful new series Thoughts of Trees. We look forward to introducing his delicate and intricate work to our audiences here in Seoul." ● On the occasion of the exhibition, Tuttle shared: Thoughts of trees / give us calm / energy, peace / love, inner silence ● Thoughts of Trees marks the fifth major exhibition at Pace Gallery in Seoul since its launch in March 2017 and Pace's eighth solo exhibition for Richard Tuttle. The exhibition in Seoul will also coincide with the opening of Pace's new gallery in Hong Kong's H Queens Building on March 26, 2018, with an inaugural exhibition dedicated to works by celebrated Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. ● Richard Tuttle (b. 1941, Rahway, New Jersey) is one of the most significant artists working today. Since the mid-1960s, he has created an extraordinarily varied body of work that eludes historical or stylistic categorization. His direct and seemingly simple deployment of objects and gestures reflects a careful attention to materials and experience. Rejecting the rationality and precision of Minimalism, Tuttle embraced a handmade quality in his invention of forms that emphasize line, shape, color, and space as central concerns. He has resisted medium-specific designations for his work, employing the term drawing to encompass what could otherwise be termed sculpture, painting, collage, installation, and assemblage. Overturning traditional constraints of material, medium, and method, Tuttle's works sensitize viewers to their perceptions. His working process, in which one series begets the next, is united by a consistent quest to create objects that are expressions of their own totality. ● Tuttle has been the subject of numerous major solo exhibitions including his 1975 exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and a 2005 retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that toured the United States. In 2014, he exhibited in the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall; simultaneously, the Whitechapel Gallery, London, presented I Don't Know. Or The Weave of Textile Language, a survey of his textile works that traveled to the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia. His work is held in more than fifty public collections worldwide, including Centre Pompidou, Paris; Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Tate, London; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others. ● The artist lives and works in Mount Desert, Maine; Abiquiu, New Mexico; and New York City. ■ Pace Gallery
