감각과 지식 사이

동시대 증폭하는 미디어테크놀로지의 개입은 물리적 공간을 넘어 의식에까지 확장되고 있다. 개인적인 공간과 마찬가지로 공공의 공간에서 이를 관통하지 않는 것은 상상할 수 없는 시대에 이른 것이다. 현실의 정보, 시간, 에너지가 데이터 세계와 거의 동시다발적으로 연동되는 지금 우리가 처한 기술혁신과 사회변화 사이의 현주소를 질문해야 할 필요가 있다.

기술이 인간의 다양한 삶의 방식을 획일화하고 사회적 상호작용이 이루어지는 미디어를 통합하며 동시에 이를 근간으로 하는 교류를 촉진해온 것이 사실이다. 이런 미디어 테크놀로지 환경에서 예술은 어떤 태도를 취하는 것이 바람직한가. 테크놀로지의 의도가 기존의 활동이나 규범과의 동기화를 통하여 사회적 자원으로서의 가용성 증진에 있다면, 예술은 초월적 사고를 이끌고 기술적인 동기화가 불가능한 영역의 시각적 묘사를 지향한다. 예술은 이러한 특성을 바탕으로 기술적 플랫폼에서 벗어나 '감각과 지식 사이 또다른 공간 Otherly Space/Knowledge'에 존재하는 제3의 장소를 모색하고 구축하며 그 가능성과 중요성을 확장한다.

이번 『감각과 지식 사이 Otherly Space/Knowledge』전은 이와 같은 기술혁신 시대에 감각과 지식 사이에 존재하는 제3의 공간을 포착하고 그 안에서 다른 위상을 전개하는 특별한 미디어아트를 소개하고 있다. 인공지능, VR, 전자파 시스템 등 첨단 테크놀로지를 사용하는 이들 작업은 우리에게 놀라움을 선사하는 것을 넘어서 '감각과 지식 사이'로 이끌어 디지털 영역의 본질적 의미와 의의에 다가가게 한다. 즉 『감각과 지식사이 Otherly Space/Knowledge』전은 데이터 세계와 현실 세계 어디쯤에 있을 제 3의 공간을 찾아가는 여정인 것이다. 또다른 그곳에 서서 우리는 기술과 예술의 지금, 여기를 인식하고 미래의 가능성을 탐색하게 될 것이다. ■ 국립아시아문화전당

Otherly Space / Knowledge draws from the idea that art holds an important role in finding and establishing an Otherly Space in the face of a technological platform that seeks unification. Situations that occur in this world become knowledge by being sensed and made into data. In this present world, every type of knowledge is being converted into data, making it difficult to find elements that are yet to be converted. We are facing a situation in which our consciousness spends the same amount of time and energy on the data world that runs parallel to the physical world. So how should we approach this Otherly Space? ● General societal protocols are being consolidated into a unified platform based on technology, and this platform's speed of exchange is accelerating. Within that context, what kind of position should art and art production take? While technology attempts to synchronize with protocols to be useful in society, art encompasses the process of reflecting on the non-synchronizable elements and visualizing them. As a result, art may play an even more important role in this information society. ● The data world has now produced dual layers of public space. Perhaps the most Otherly Space may exist within the public space that appears most near and recognizable to us. What then does a public space visualized by data look like? ● This exhibition includes a variety of projects including video works based on social research of cities and behavioral patterns, an experiential audio piece that takes place in an anechoic chamber, and a diverse range of interactive installations using latest audiovisual technology, all tackling questions of space and knowledge-creation, visualization, and social data. ■ ASIA CULTURE CENTER(ACC)
