심호흡 Deep Breath

경기문화재단 로비갤러리의 2018년 첫 막을 여는 전시로 유카와 나카야스의 『심호흡 Deep Breath』展을 선보입니다. 유카와 나카야스는 히로야스 유카와와 케이치 나카야스로 이뤄진 2인조 그룹작가이며 일본을 주축으로 활동하고 있습니다. 유카와 나카야스는 2017년 경기창작센터와 일본 아키요시다이 국제아트빌리지의 국제교류 레지던스 프로그램을 통해 경기창작센터에 입주하여 이번 전시와 동명의 개인전을 개최했습니다. 본 전시는 유카와 나카야스가 이번 전시를 위해 제작한 신작4점과 지난해 경기창작센터에서 열린 개인전에서 선보였던 작업의 결과물 10점을 소개합니다.

유카와 나카야스는 우리의 삶을 구성하는 '풍요로운' 역사를 위해 과거와 현재 그리고 미래를 위한 인류의 내재된 행위 '심호흡'에서 출발합니다. 인류가 타자와의 관계에서 균형을 찾기 위한 과정을 유심히 관찰하는 데에서 비롯하여 인간을 비롯한 생명을 가진 모든 만물이 가진 원시적인 행위에 주목합니다. 로비갤러리에서 선보이는 14점의 작업을 통해 삶의 '풍요로움'을 구성하기 위한 그들의 소통 방식을 한층 느낄 수 있는 기회가 될 것입니다. ● 이번 전시를 통해 유카와 나카야스가 경기창작센터와 인연을 맺으면서부터 시작된 한국의 문화를 소재로 한 작업을 포함하여 『심호흡 Deep Breath』이라는 제목은 그들에게 한층 심도있는 작업주제가 되어, 2월말 일본 아키요시다이 국제아트빌리지, 5월 대만 타이페이 아티스트 빌리지에서도 동명의 제목으로 일본, 대만 문화를 소재로 한 작업을 선보일 예정입니다. ■ 경기문화재단 로비갤러리

외부로부터 유입된 비정상, 생경한 대상 또는 사람에 대해 우리사회는 대체로 단호히 한번에 거부하지는 않는다.주변은 불편함과 당혹감이 가득하게 되고, 하루하루의 일상은 영향을 받을 수 있다. 하지만 아무리 잠시라 해도 사회는 일단 그를 수용한다. 우리는 이해하고 해석하고, 우리의 평정을 되찾으면서 종내에는 그에 대응하기 위해 최선을 다한다. 이는 마치 우리가 심호흡을 하는 것과 같다. 결국 사회는 자연스럽게 평정상태가 회복되도록 자신을 재조정한다. ● 사회의 "심호흡"이란 이 실존적 상은 구전으로 또 기록으로 전달되어 내려온 노래, 전설, 교훈, 설화에 모두 내재되어 있다. 이들은 비정상 또는 생경한 대상의 침입 이후 평정을 되찾고자 하는 사회의 노력에 대한 먼 과거로부터의 증언이다. 우리가 만드는 조각은 이와 같은 사회의 심호흡과 닮아 있다. 마치 숨을 들이 마시듯, 우리는 오래 된 이야기에서 다양한 모티프, 오브제 그리고 배경을 수집하고 결합시킨다. 그런 다음, 콜라주와 퍼포먼스에서 이들을 재 경험함과 동시에 물리적인 조율의 과정을 거쳐 작품을 조각한다. 조금은 추상적인 요소로서 현대 사화를 옛날 이야기들 사이에 위치시키면서 종국에 이 조각들은 불특정 대중에 퍼져 나간다. 이 때 드러나는 것은 노래 부르기, 구술, 서술하기와 같은 가장 원시적인 형태의 소통이다. ● 우리는 "풍부함"의 의미를 탐구하는 용어인 "풍부함의 역사"를 구축하는 것을 오랜 기간 목표로 추구해왔다. 이 작업은 이를 향해 한 발 더 나아가는 것이다. 우리가 만드는 조각들은 잊혀질 과거와 다가올 미래에 대한 우리의 고민을 반영한다. 이의 중심에는 다음의 질문들이 존재한다. 풍부함에 대한 암시가 혹시 사회의 호흡에 숨겨져 있는 것은 아닐까? 이 과정을 소통하는 원시적인 행위, 인간 사회의 본질이 자리하는 그 곳에 있는 것은 아닐까? ■ 유카와 나카야스

Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation Lobby Gallery is pleased to present as its first exhibition of 2018 Deep Breath, solo show of Yukawa Nakayasu . Yukawa Nakayasu is an artist duo based in Japan, consisting of Yukawa Hiroyasu and Nakayasu Keiichi. In 2017, Yukawa Nakayasu has held a namesake solo exhibition at Gyeonggi Creation Center (GCC) as part of the international exchange artist residency program by GCC and Akiyoshidai International Art Village. ● This time, 4 new works specially produced or the exhibition will be displayed together with 10 pieces included in the exhibition at GCC. To shed light on the 'fertile' history that constitutes our lives, Yukawa Nakayasu sets as its starting point the act of 'deep breath' which has been and will be immanent throughout the past, present and the future. While attentively observing the journey of humans trying to achieve balance in the relationship with others, artists focus on the primitive behavior found not only in humans but also in all other living things. Through the 14 pieces displayed in the Lobby Gallery, audiences will come to appreciate the way how they communicate to forge 'richness' of lives. ● The theme Deep Breath with works reflecting on Korean culture which the artists became acquainted during their stay at GCC will be further developed and conceptually extended at Akiyoshidai International Art Village, Japan, this February and at Taipei Artist Village, this May, and culminate in namesake exhibitions which will showcase the cultures of Japan and Taiwan. ■ Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation Lobby Gallery

The human society usually doesn't flatly reject any abnormality, alien object or person coming from the outside. The daily routine may be disturbed, and the air filled with discomfort, bewilderment and inconvenience. But society accepts that, at least for the moment. We do our best to understand and interpret, and eventually respond while regaining our composure. Like we do when taking a deep breath. At the end, society resets so that its equilibrium is restored in a natural way. ● The reality of that "deep breathing" of society is inherent in songs, legends, lessons and other old tales that have been handed down through oral or written literature. These are accounts from the distant past of how society has been trying to regain its composure after intrusions of abnormalities or alien objects. The sculptures we create are like that deep breathing of society. We collect and incorporate – as if inhaling – elements such as motifs, objects and backgrounds from old tales. From there we create sculptures in a process of physical attunement as we re-experience these things through collages and performances. Interposing contemporary society as a rather abstract element of old tales, the sculptures that emerge eventually spread among the unspecified public. What is exposed there are the most primitive forms of communication: singing, narrating, and writing down. ● This work marks another step on our way to our persistently pursued aim of constructing a "history of fertility," an original term that explores the meaning of "richness." The sculptures we build reflect our considerations for the past that will be forgotten, and for the future that will come. These considerations focus on the question whether hints of fertility may be hidden in the very process of society's breathing, and whether it may be in the primitive act of communicating that process, where the essence of the human society lies. ■ Yukawa Nakayasu
