1000만 명이 사는 대한민국의 수도 서울은 역사가 깊다. BC 8000~7000년 무렵부터 사람들이 마을을 이루고 살았다. 고대 한반도를 삼분한 왕조 중의 하나인 백제가 BC 18년에 여기서 건국했다. 그 뒤 한산, 한성, 한양, 양주, 남경, 경성 등으로 이름이 바뀌며 현대에 이르러 서울이 됐다. 조선 왕조 이래 서울은 700년 넘게 한반도의 중심이다. ● 베이징은 1272년에 처음 중국 왕조의 수도가 됐고, 도쿄 에도성은 1457년에 세워졌다. 파리는 BC 50년, 런던은 AC 43년 로마군이 입성하며 역사에 등장한다. 로마가 BC 6세기에 도시국가의 기초를 닦았으니 서울의 무게를 가늠할 만하다. ● 서울은 산과 물의 도시다. 한반도 동쪽 산맥 골골을 흘러내린 물이 모여 한강이 된다. 강은 한반도의 중심부를 관통해 북한산과 관악산을 가르며 서해로 흘러든다. 서울은 이 두개의 산 사이 강가와 언덕 위에 세워졌다. 산과 물, 옛것과 새것이 공존하는 서울 풍경은 세계 어느 대도시에서도 만나기 힘들다. 오래전부터 예술가들이 서울을 노래해 온 이유다. 대한민국 작가 다섯이 이 같은 서울을 세계에 알리는 작업에 나선다.

조풍류 작가는 아교에 돌가루를 개어 작업한다. 서울의 산과 물과 마을은 투박한 재료를 만나 차가움을 버리고 따스한 풍경이 된다. ● 정명식 작가는 궁궐 목수다. 그의 어깨엔 연장통과 사진기가 늘 붙어 다닌다. 다른 이들이 볼 수 없는 시각으로 신비한 서울의 모습을 담아낸다. ● 김동욱 작가의 사진은 우리가 잊어버린 기억을 불러낸다. 그의 뷰파인더는 자연의 미묘한 변화를 재빠르게 낚아챈다. 거기엔 서사와 상징이 있다. ● 제미영 작가는 서양화와 한국화를 두루 섭렵했다. 다양한 색깔과 질감을 가진 조각보를 잘라 바느질 콜라주로 도시의 갖가지 이면을 들여다본다, ● 안충기 작가는 현직 신문기자이자 화가다. 철 펜에 먹물을 찍어 한 땀 한 땀 획을 긋는 지난한 작업을 한다. 작품 하나에 2년이 걸리기도 한다. ● 한국화, 서양화, 사진, 펜화… 다섯 가지 색깔로 서울이 다시 태어난다. 문화 서울 르네상스, 이들의 시선이 닿은 지점이다. ■ 안충기

SEOUL soul of Korea ● South Korean capital is a home to 10 million people and boasts a long history. Around 8000-7000 B.C. people already formed a village in the area. Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms which ruled over ancient Korea, was founded here in 18 B.C. Before gaining its present name, Seoul was known as Hansan, Hanseong, Hanyang, Yangju, Namgyeong, Gyeongseong etc. Under the Joseon dynasty it remained the center of Korean Peninsula for more than 700 years. ● Beijing first gained the status of China's capital city in 1272, Edo Castle in Tokyo was built in 1457. Paris and London first appeared in history in 50 B.C. and 43 A.C. respectively when the Roman army made its triumphal entry into their fortresses, and in 6th century B.C. the city-state of Rome expanded its control. Looking at these dates one can estimate how deep Seoul's roots are. Seoul is a city of mountains and rivers. Water from mountain chains in the eastern part of Korean Peninsula is gathered into Han river. This river flows through the peninsula and reaches the Yellow Sea, cutting through Bukhansan and Gwanaksan. Seoul was built on hills and riverbanks between these two mountains. ● Seoul has a unique scenery combining mountains and rivers, old and new. Hardly any other megapolis can boast such a landscape. This is why Seoul has been praised by artists since long ago. ● This time five Korean artists strive to show the city of Seoul to the world. ● Cho Poong-ryu uses stone powder and glue, and with these rough materials he creates landscapes of Seoul's mountains, rivers and villages filled with warmth rather than coldness. ● Jeoung, Myoungsik works as a carpenter in royal palaces. He can always be seen with a toolbox and a camera over his shoulder. He captures mysterious glimpses of Seoul with his unique vision. ● Dongwook Kim brings our forgotten memories back to life. His viewfinder quickly catches even the slightest changes in nature, while his photos are filled with storytelling and symbolism. ● Je Mi-young extensively studied Western and Korean painting techniques which let her acquire a distinctive style and create intricate textile collages using various colors and textures to show Seoul from different sides. Ahn Chungki is a newspaper journalist and a painter. His art is born through a difficult process while he draws it stroke by stroke with a fine steel nib pen and India ink. It took him almost 2 years to complete some of his works. ● Now Seoul is reborn in five different colors... Reborn through Korean and Western painting, through photography and ink art. Seoul's Renaissance is what caught these artists' eye. ■
