숨쉬는 섬 Breathing Island

갤러리 바톤은 12월 20일부터 2018년 1월 27일까지 압구정동 전시 공간에서 배윤환(Bae Yoon Hwan, b.1983)의 개인전 『숨쉬는 섬(Breathing Island)』을 개최한다. 현대미술 매체의 범람 속에서도 드로잉에 충실히 매진하며 회화의 의미와 가능성을 확장하는 배윤환이 대규모 신작 회화를 선보이는 자리다. ● 이번 전시에서 배윤환은 자동기술법에 기반을 두고 의식의 흐름을 따라 그려나간 초대형 작품 「숨 쉬는 섬」을 선보인다. 배윤환의 캔버스는 그림을 받아들일 준비를 하고 살아 숨 쉬는 생물이나 다름없다. 그는 상상과 욕망, 그리고 화가이자 인간으로서 자신의 삶에 대한 고민을 다양한 크기의 캔버스에 담아낸다. 작가는 머릿속에 떠다니는 수많은 생각과 감정을 사로잡아 캔버스에 얹어나가고, 캔버스는 그것을 완전히 흡수해 새로운 형상을 만들어낸다. 그는 머릿속에 무작위로 떠오른 이미지를 선별해 손이 닿는 대로 채워나가며 규정된 캔버스 프레임을 자유자재로 넘나든다. 작가 자신을 제약하는 모든 것을 화면에 흩뿌린 그의 작품은 모든 것에서 벗어나 자유로이 숨을 쉬는 섬이다. 그의 머릿속 사고체계가 오롯이 담긴 대형 페인팅 두점을 포함한 신작들은 오일 파스텔, 아크릴 등 서로 다른 재료와 화면으로 구성된다. 작품의 이미지, 색감은 동떨어져 있는 듯 보이지만 유기적으로 연결되며 형상의 절정을 담는다.

배윤환은 이탈리아 소설가 이탈로 칼비노(Italo Calvino, 1923~1985)의 책 「나무 위의 남작 (Il barone rampante)」을 읽고 주인공 코지모와 자신의 공통점을 발견한다. 코지모는 권위적이고 귀족적 삶을 강요하는 아버지에 대한 반발로 나무 위에 올라가 버린다. 하지만 그에게 나무는 회피하고 은둔하는 장소가 아닌 세상을 한걸음 떨어져 관망하게 하는 매개체다. 여기서 코지모의 나무는 배윤환의 섬과 유사하게 작용한다. 배윤환의 '섬'은 작가를 둘러 싼 모든 것이다. 캔버스 수십 개가 놓인 작업실의 모습이자, 모든 걸 훌훌 털어버리고 도달할 수 있는 미지의 공간이며, 나아가 그의 삶이기도 하다. 작가는 섬의 의미를 정의하고 섬에 관한 모든 것을 상상해 작품에 담는다. ● 이번 전시에서 배윤환은 엉뚱한 상상을 줄지어 이어나가는 방식을 고수하면서도, 작업 과정에서 자신을 옭아매는 걱정과 우려를 최대한 배제한다. 켜켜이 쌓아둔 감정의 꾸러미를 비워내고 덜어내는 과정에서 현재와 과거의 감정이 교차한다. 그는 자신의 머릿속을 헤집고 다니는 모든 요소를 캔버스 위에 이어붙이고 떨어뜨린다. "각각의 캔버스는 생각을 흡수하는 섬이자 그것을 태우고 정처 없이 흘러가는 배 한 척과 같다. 섬이 숨 쉬는 동안 계속해서 생물이 탄생한다"라는 작가의 말처럼, 작가 자신도 결과물을 예측할 수 없을 만큼 자유로움이 돋보이는 작품을 대거 선보이며 복합적인 서사구조에 역동적인 에너지를 담아낸다. ■ 갤러리바톤

Gallery Baton is delighted to announce Bae Yoon Hwan(b.1983)'s solo exhibition, 'Breathing Island', from 20th December 2017 to 27th January 2018 in Apgujeong, Seoul. This exhibition will unveil new large scale paintings by Bae who has dedicated himself to producing drawings in order to investigate and extend meanings and possibilities of paintings despite the overflow of contemporary art's media and modes. ● In this exhibition, Bae Yoon Hwan reveals his outsized piece, 'Breathing Island' containing numerous drawings achieved by the automatic painting technique—a means of expressing the subconscious. He perceives his canvas as a certain living organism which is prepared to embrace pictures. He unfolds his imagination, desire and profound questions about life as a painter and an individual onto multiple sized canvases. He catches his countless reflections and sentiments to build them up on the canvases; the canvases then completely absorb them and generate entirely new configurations. ● Bae freely crosses restricted canvas frames by selecting arbitrary images that he comes across in his imagination and filling up the vacant plane with the imageries. Consequently, his work conveying all scattered fragments which limit the artist himself becomes an island breathing without any restraints. Approximately thirty canvases holding the spectrum of his thinking consist of various pictures and distinct materials including oil pastels and acrylics. Although images and colours of the work seem to be remote from each other, they reach a climax of the figural landscape when they are organically connected. ● Bae Yoon Hwan found a similarity in Cosimo who is a main character of Italo Calvino (1923~1985)'s novel, Il Barone Rampante(The Baron in the Trees). To disobey his father who compels him to have an aristocratic and authoritative life, Cosimo climbs up a tree and decides never to come down again. For Cosimo, the tree signifies a mediator allowing him to observe his world in an appropriate distance rather than a place where he would withdraw himself from the reality. In this context, Cosimo's tree parallels Bae Yoon Hwan's island. Bae's island stands for everything encircles him; it is not only his studio where dozens of canvases are placed and a unknown space where he could arrive after escaping from confinement, but also his own life. Bae attempts to define the meaning of the island and to embody every single fictive element of the island. ● He maintains the depicting style of arraying his eccentric reveries, whereas he excludes most of apprehension and concern that tightly bind him in the process of creation. While he empties piled layers of collective emotions, sentiments from the present and the past intersect. He attaches and segregates all aspects recklessly intruding upon inside of his head. ● Bae once mentioned, "Each canvas is an island absorbing thoughts and also a boat carrying them and wandering aimlessly. While the island is breathing, creatures are constantly emerging." Thus, he has achieved delivering dynamic energy into a complicated structure of narrative by presenting a great number of paintings possessing a sense of freedom to such an extent that the artist himself can not predict the outcome. ■ Gallery Baton
