아뜰리에 에르메스는 2017년을 마무리하면서 베네수엘라(Venezuela) 출신의 작가 로사 마리아 운다 수키(Rosa Maria Unda Souki)의 개인전 『롱드르街와 아옌데街의 모퉁이에서(On the Corner of Londres and Allende Streets), 1938-1954)』를 마련한다.

로사 마리아 운다 수키는 2012년부터 「롱드르가와 아옌데가의 모퉁이에서」라는 제목으로 프리다 칼로(Frida Kahlo, 1907-1954)와 '푸른 집'(La Casa Azul, The Blue House)이라고 불리는 그녀의 옛집을 둘러싼 기억을 따라가는 프로젝트를 진행해왔다. 로사 마리아 운다 수키의 이 오랜 프로젝트는 총 54점의 드로잉과 56점의 페인팅, 그리고 리서치 과정을 담아낸 다큐멘터리 영상으로 구성되어 있다. 이 프로젝트는 (1) 프리다 칼로의 유년 시절(1907-1925), (2) 프리다 칼로의 비극적인 사고와 결혼(1926-1937), (3) 푸른 집의 시작과 두 차례에 걸친 개축(1938-1946), 그리고 (4) 푸른 집에서의 프리다 칼로의 여생과 죽음(1947-1954)에 관한 부분으로 구분된다. 이 방대한 프로젝트는 2014년과 2015년에 마드리드와 파리에서 일부 소개되었고, 이번 아뜰리에 에르메스의 전시에서는 최근에 완성된 회화 35점과 이 모든 과정을 담아 새롭게 제작된 다큐멘터리 영상이 전시 된다.

누군가가 살고 있거나, 살았던 '집'이라는 내밀한 장소가 가진 기억과 일상성에 관한 관심으로부터 비롯된 로사 마리아 운다 수키의 작업은 프리다 칼로의 삶과 그녀의 집을 중첩시키면서 시간의 흐름 속에서 하나의 시(詩)적인 공간을 구축한다. 푸른 집에 관한 도상학적이고 역사적인 리서치를 바탕으로, 마치 프리다 칼로의 초상을 그리듯이, 로사 마리아 운다 수키는 그녀가 머물렀던 푸른 집의 구석구석을 조심스레 따라가며 그 공간과 장소가 담고 있는 기억과 이야기들을 자신의 캔버스 위로 불러낸다. 사실에 기반하지만 때로는 상상이 가미된 이 내밀한 작업들은 지나가버린 시간(과거)들을 '회화'라는 영원한 시간 속에서 기억하려는 로사 마리아의 실천적 행위의 결과물이다. ● 특히, 2017년은 프리다 칼로의 탄생 110주년이 되는 해이다. 남미 출신의 젊은 여성 작가가 남미(멕시코)의 대표적인 여성 작가인 프리다 칼로의 삶과 예술을 그녀의 삶과 예술이 머물렀던, 그리고 여전히 그 기억으로 가득 찬 공간을 통해 새롭게 바라보고 해석한다는 점은 신화로만 머물던 프리다 칼로를 다시 볼 수 있는 계기를 마련해주고, 더불어, 여성의 시각으로 재해석된 여성의 삶을 본다는 점에서도 유의미한 지점을 확보한다.

로사 마리아 운다 수키는 1977년에 베네수엘라의 카라카스(Caracas)에서 태어났고, 현재 브라질의 벨루오리존치(Belo Horizonte)에서 거주하며, 주로 파리를 중심으로 유럽에서 활동하고 있다. Instituto Universitario de Estudios Superiores de Artes Plásticas (Academic Institute of Higher Studies in Plastic Arts, 1999)를 졸업하고 2000년에 Federal University of Minas Gerais' School of Fine Arts (EBA-UFMG)에서 석사학위를 취득했다. 2014년에 Prize Fondation Colas (France)를 수상했고, 2011년에는 The 56th Salon de l'Art Contemporaine de Montrouge (Ville de Montrouge, France)에서 심사위원 특별상을 수상했다. ■ 아뜰리에 에르메스

Atelier Hermès is pleased to present Rosa Maria Unda Souki's solo exhibition On the Corner of Londres and Allende Streets, 1938-1954. ● Since 2012, Rosa Maria Unda Souki has been working on the project of tracing back to the memory around Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) and her old house called La Casa Azul (The Blue House) under the title On the Corner of Londres and Allende Streets, 1938-1954. Rosa Maria Unda Souki's long-standing project consists of 54 drawings, 56 paintings, and a documentary video of her research process. This project is chronologically divided into 4 parts: (1) Frida Kahlo's childhood and adolescence (1907-1925), (2) Frida Kahlo's tragic accident and her marriage with Diego Rivera (1926-1937), (3) the beginning of the story of the Blue House as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera's house, including two rounds reform and extension of the Blue House (1938-1946), and (4) the last period of Frida Kahlo's life and her death in the Blue House (1947-1954). The earlier parts of this project were presented in Madrid and Paris in 2014 and 2015. At the exhibition of Atelier Hermes, 35 recently completed paintings and a newly produced documentary video will be shown. ● Rosa Maria Unda Souki's work, which is based on the memory and dailiness of the intimate place of the "house" where someone lives or lived, builds up a poetic space in the flow of time, overlapping Frida Kahlo's life with the life of Frida Kahlo's house. Based on the iconographical and historical research of the Blue House, Rosa Maria Unda Souki carefully traces every corner of the Blue House where Frida Kahlo lived, as if to draw the portrait of Frida Kahlo, and recalls the memories and stories of the space and the place on her canvas. These intricate works, merged with facts and somewhat fantasies, are the result of Rosa Maria Unda Souki's memory practice to retain the time passed (the past) in the eternal/present time of "painting." ● The year 2017 is the 110th anniversary of the birth of Frida Kahlo. It is a significant project that a young South American woman artist revisits the life and art of Frida Kahlo, a representative woman artist in South America (Mexico), through her space of life and art. It gives a meaningful occasion to think over again Frida Kahlo, who only stayed in myth, as well as to reconsider a woman's life revisited from a woman's perspective. ● Born in Caracas (Venezuela) in 1977, Rosa Maria Unda Souki lives in Belo Horizonte (Brazil) and actively works in Europe. She graduated from Instituto Universitario de Estudios Superiores de Artes Plásticas (Academic Institute of Higher Studies in Plastic Arts, 1999) and received her master's degree from Federal University of Minas Gerais' School of Fine Arts (EBA-UFMG) in 2000.
