경계 155

휴전선 155마일로 남과 북이 분단된 지 60여 년의 시간이 흘렀다. 그간 우리 사회는 산업화와 민주화를 거쳐, 신자유주의 방식의 자본주의가 사회 전반을 장악한 가운데에서도 시민 각자가 자발적으로 참여하고 연대하여 적극적으로 의사를 표명하는 광장민주주의로 접어들었다. 이러한 변화는 세계사에서 유례를 찾기 어려울 만큼 빠른 속도로 진행되었으나 여전히 우리는 전 세계 어디에도 존재하지 않는 냉전의 도식 안에서 살아가고 있다. 특히 최근 들어 강도를 더해가는 북핵 위기와 자국의 이익을 우선하는 주변국들의 움직임은 한반도 문제에 대한 우리의 주도적 역할과 분단 해소를 위한 노력이 절실히 필요하다는 것을 보여주었다.

『경계 155』展은 '통일'을 화두로 우리가 생각해봐야 할 것은 무엇이며 필요한 노력은 무엇인지 살펴보고자 한다. 통일을 바라봄에 있어서 국가와 국가 간의 합체, 근대의 완성과 같은 거대한 목표지향이라기 보다는 분단이라는 비극적 상황이 장기간 고착됨에 따라 비정상이 일상화되어 정상이 되어버린 한반도의 분단 현실을 직시하고자 한다. 또한 젊은 세대에 이를수록 통일에 대한 무관심과 부정적 시각이 커져 가고 있는 현실을 인지하고 현재 대한민국의 정치, 경제, 문화 등 사회 전반에 대한 인식과 태도를 바탕으로 통일에 대해 생각해보는 기회를 마련하고자 한다.

이번 전시는 통일에 대한 보다 폭넓은 시각 확보를 위해 실시한 대국민 일반공모를 통해 선정한 작품들과 미술관의 연구를 바탕으로 선정한 지정공모 작가들의 작업으로 구성되었다. 전시에 참여하는 26명(팀)의 작가들은 1940년대 생부터 80년대 생을 포괄하며, 각자의 세대와 사회 전반에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한 작품들을 선보인다. 이들의 작업은 일상 속에 내재되어 있는 분단의 다양한 양상들이 오늘날 우리의 삶 속에서 어떻게 연속되고 있는지 살펴보며, 한국현대사의 압축성장 과정에서 나타난 세대대립과 자본주의의 병폐 속에서 전쟁과 분단이라는 역사적 트라우마를 어떻게 극복할 것인가에 대한 논의를 담고 있다. 이번 전시를 통해 한반도 분단 상황의 병리적 정상성을 인식하고 우리의 삶 전반을 지배하는 경계를 허물기 위해 필요한 노력이 무엇인지 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회가 되기를 희망한다. ■ 서울시립미술관

It has been more than 60 years since South and North Korea were separated by 155 miles of the Military Demarcation Line. In the meantime, our society, after going through industrialization and democratization, has entered into 'public square democracy' as each citizen voluntarily participates and shows solidarity in expressing their opinions, despite the current of neo-liberalism dominating our society as a whole. These changes have progressed at a pace that is unprecedented in world history, but we are still living in the Cold War schema that does not exist anywhere in the world. In particular, the recent aggravation of the North Korean nuclear crisis and the movements of neighboring countries to prioritize their own interests show us that our leading role with respect to the issues of the Korean peninsula and our efforts to resolve the division are urgently needed. ● 『Border 155』, focusing on the theme of the 'unification', intends to have a close look at what we need to think about and what we need to do with the unification. Instead of pursuing grand objectives, such as uniting the two nations or completing the modern period, the exhibition looks squarely at the reality of the Korean division in which abnormalities have been normalized by becoming part of our everyday life, as the tragic situation of the division has been unchanging for a long time. In addition, the exhibition recognizes the fact that indifference and negative views towards the unification are becoming stronger among younger generations, and aims to reflect on the issue in terms of awareness and attitudes shared by the society at large, including Korea's politics, economy, and culture at present. ● The exhibition consists of works selected through the museum's contest for the general public, motivated by the idea of having a broader perspective on the unification, as well as works of the artists researched and chosen by the museum for its specified contest. The 26 participating artists (or teams) in the exhibition range from those born in the 1940s to those born in the 1980s, and their understandings of their own generation and society are embodied in their works. Their works examine how various aspects of the division entrenched in our everyday life persist on a daily basis, while at the same time opening a discussion on how to overcome our historical traumas of war and division, as we are also coping with the generational conflict and the evils of capitalism caused by Korea's rapid growth in its modern history. The exhibition provides an opportunity to be conscious of this pathological normality embedded in the reality of the Korean division, along with a place to contemplate the necessary efforts to break down the border that dominate our entire life. ■ SEOUL MUSEUM OF ART (SeMA)
