본 전시는 서울시립미술관에서 운영하는 난지미술창작스튜디오 11기 입주자 기획전시인 『2017 NANJI ART SHOW』로서 다섯 번째 전시입니다. 전시는 현재 입주활동을 하고 있는 입주작가에 의해 기획되었으며, 2017 난지아트쇼는 11월 말까지 5회에 걸쳐 지속적으로 진행됩니다. ■ 난지미술창작스튜디오

École Buissonnière(덤불학교)는 프랑스어로 아이들이 학교에 가지 않고 덤불에 숨어서 시간을 보낸다는 의미를 가진다. 이 표현은 16세기에 루터가 야산으로 들어가 덤불학교를 세우고 새로운 종교를 일으켰다는 기록에서 유래한다. 덤불학교는 기존의 질서에 대한 저항으로써 부재의 철학. 그리고 제자리를 벗어남으로써 가능한 명상과 창조의 공간이다. ● 덤불은 아쿠타가와 류노스케의 단편 소설 『덤불 속』에 나오는 살인 사건의 장소이다. 덤불 속 살인사건의 목격자들은 각자의 입장에서 기억을 더듬어 사건을 진술하지만 객관적으로 그 진위를 가늠하기는 어렵다. 반면 덤불 밖의 경찰은 덤불 속에서 벌어진 상황을 본질적으로 접근할 수 없으니 더 믿을 만한 것이 못 된다. 그렇다고 죽은 망령의 목소리를 믿을 수 없는 노릇이니…… 덤불 속에서 일어난 살인 사건의 진실은 주관적 기억과 객관적 진실 사이의 불완전한 경계를 떠돌며, 궁극적으로 덤불의 경계를 어디에 그을 것인가 라는 질문으로 이어진다. ● 『무단결석: École Buissonnière』은 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것의 경계를 질문하며, 우리가 그 동안 구축해온 이분법적 사고 -제도와 일탈, 저항과 자유, 놀이와 교육, 존재와 부재- 에 대한 의심에서 시작한다. 무단결석은 부재와 그 행위의 부적절함을. 덤불학교는 일탈을 통한 자유를 강조하면서. 부재의 의미는 일탈과 자유 사이로 미끄러진다. 무단결석과 덤불학교가 만나는 모순된 경계는 서로를 보완하고 억제하는 힘에 의해서 유지되기도 하지만, 일종의 유예된 일탈과 욕망 속 스릴을 공모하기도 한다. 난지미술창작스튜디오 11기에 입주한 기슬기, 김인배, 최대진, 사이먼 바크워스는 각자의 조형언어로 내부의 저항과 외부의 개입이 만들어내는 경계에 집중해 왔으며, 주체와 객체, 물성과 변성, 생성과 소멸, 기표와 기의 사이에서 발생하는 힘의 작동 방식에 주목해왔다. 오픈스튜디오 기간 동안에 열리는 『무단결석: École Buissonnière』은 끊임없이 보여주고 드러내고 증명해야 하는 '전시사회'에서 볼 수 없고 사라지고 증명할 수 없는 것들에 대한 질문이다. 보이는 것을 보지 못하게 하는 불안은 어디에서 온 걸까? 보이지 않지만 보게 하는 억지력은 어디에서 온 걸까? 이 전시는 인간이 영원히 다가갈 수 없는 진실과 마찬가지로 보고 있는 것과 듣고 있는 것을 끊임없이 의심해야 하는 지각능력의 한계를 인지하며, 그 경계에서 생성하고 소멸하는 물리적 움직임, 심리적 관계 그리고 사고의 전이에 귀 기울이는 짧은 전주곡이다. ■ 난지미술창작스튜디오

기슬기, 김인배, 최대진, 사이먼 바크워스는 두 개의 원형 전시실에 뒤섞이며 대조적인 풍경을 만든다. 한 전시장은 기슬기의 검은 띠가 긋는 경계 주변으로 김인배의 판제와 두상, 사이먼 바크워스의 조각, 기슬기의 사진, 그리고 최대진의 라이트 박스가 균형을 찾아가는 절제의 공간이다. 다른 전시장은 입구를 가로막은 붉은 텐트와 어두운 입을 벌리는 덤불 속에서 네 명의 작가들이 충돌하며 만들어내는 픽션의 공간이다. 두 개의 전시장은 창문 너머 공업용 파이프와 덤불을 배경으로 하는 최대진의 나른한 드로잉으로 이어진다. ■

Pirate Edition is the fourth exhibition of the 2017 NANJI ART SHOW by the artists of the 11th SeMA NANJI RESIDENCY, a program operated by the Seoul Museum of Fine Art. Organized by the artists currently in residency, this exhibition series is held regularly in 5 sessions, until the end of November, 2017. ■ SeMA NANJI RESIDENCY

The French expression École Buissonnière implies the notion of students skipping school and hiding out in the bushes. This expression originates from the historical event of Martin Luther setting up a school in the bushes and founding a new religion in the 16thcentury.École Buissonnière signifies a spirit which resists the existing order, and is a metaphor of a space of contemplation and creation that is made possible through deviation. ● The bush is a place where a murder takes place in Ryunosuke Akutagawa's short novel In a Grove. The witnesses of the murder in the bushes describe the incident to the best of their own memory, but it's difficult too bjectively gauge their authenticity. On the other hand, the police outside of the bushes are even less reliable because they can not essentially access an incidence that took inside the bushes. And it would be even more absurd to listen to the voice of the murdered. The truth behind the murder that takes place inside the bushes traverses across the incomplete boundaries between subjective memories and objective truth, to eventually lead to the question as to where to draw the boundary of the bush. ● Truant: École Buissonnière questions the boundary between the visible and the invisible, and the dichotomous way of thinking on conformity and nonconformity, resistance and freedom, play and education, and presence and absence which we have constructed. Truant signifies absence and its inappropriateness while École Buissonnière, freedom through deviation. Thus, the meaning of absence slips between deviation and freedom. While the contradictory boundary between truant and École Buissonnière is clearly marked as the two ideas complement and repress each other, they indulge in the thrill of the delayed deviation and desires. ● The artists of the 11thSeMA NANJI RESIDENCY— Seulki Ki, Inbai Kim, Daejin Choi and Simon Barkworth — focus on the boundaries that are created in between internal resistance and external intervention through their distinct artistic language. Each of the artists explores the ways in which the forces, generated between subject and object, material and its metamorphosis, creation and extinction, and signifier and signified, operate. Held during Open Studio, Truant: École Buissonnière is a question about things that are invisible, disappearing and unverifiable in 'the exhibition society' which is expected to constantly demonstrate, expose and verify. Where does the anxiety that makes invisible what is visible come from? Where does the deterrence force that makes visible what is invisible come from? ● Truanct: École Buissonnière focuses on truths which will always remain unattainable to human, and the human ability to perceive which is just as inaccessible and limited, and thus must be always questioned. It is a short prelude to the physical movement, psychological relationships and philosophical transition that is generated and extinguished in the boundary between such truths and human perception.
