The New World

동남아 여행길 버스 안에서 김태헌은 케니를 만났다. 그들의 우연한 만남은 또 다른 인연으로 이어져, 그림으로 함께 할 수 있는 전시를 하게 되었다. 세상 속에서 시작된 그림으로 그들은 새로운 세상을 만난다. ● 태국의 대학에서 그림을 전공한 케니는 주말마다 아이들을 가르치고, 초상화를 그려 주고, 잡지에 글과 그림을 연재하고, 노화가의 일대기를 쓰기도 한다. 그밖에 부지런히 다른 부업을 하면서도 자신이 좋아하는 그림 그리기를 쉬지 않는다. 캄캄한 밤, 새벽 2~3시에 일어나는 케니는 하루를 시작하기 전에 매일 일기를 쓰듯 커피로 그림을 그린다. 상상의 세상을 만나 돌아다니며, 영혼의 세계를 그리는 그는 그림 속으로 들어가 자신의 내면을 들여다보기도 한다. 다른 사람과의 관계를 통해 자신을 발견하는 케니는 바쁘고 힘든 세상, 삶 속에서 살기 위한 모든 것을 터득하며 지금 여기에 이르렀다. 이번 전시에서 케니의 '333 coffee time' 드로잉 중에 서른 점의 드로잉이 까만 밤의 둥근 프레임을 통해 자신의 세상을 보여준다. ● 하얀 낮의 둥근 프레임을 통해 보이는 김태헌의 세상은 누군가의 시선을 깊게 끌어들인다. 쓸모없어진 옛날 병풍의 그림을 밑 본으로, 필요한 부분만을 남겨놓고 까맣게 지워나간 민화 풍의 그림 위에 우주인이 둥둥 떠다닌다. 과거와 미래가 만나는 초현실적 상황은 '이게 뭐지?'하고 기존의 그림을 한 번 더 생각하게 만든다. 모든 것이 너무 빨리 사라지고 잊혀져 가는 세상에서 버려진 병풍의 그림은 다시 생명을 얻어 '밤의 정원-우주인'으로 9점의 시리즈를 이룬다. 김태헌이 세상 속으로 들어가 건져 올린 감각적인 그림들은 관람자에게 사색하는 즐거움을 선사한다. 그림으로 매일 다른 세상을 만나는 "놀子" 김태헌은 지금 현재의 삶을 즐기며, 그림으로 무언가를 하기 위해 새로운 시선으로 세상을 바라본다. ● 그들에게 그리고 우리에게 세상은 무엇을 의미하는가. 눈을 감고 모든 것을 내려놓았을 때, 보이는 세상이 진정한 새로운 세상이 아닐까! ■ 조정란

나는 그림으로 매일 다른 세상을 만난다. 사실 일상은 되풀이 되는 삶의 연속이지만, 그래도 세상을 새롭게 바라보려 한다. 그런 나의 태도가 묻어있는 그림은 '어떻게, 어떤 걸 그릴까?'보다 주로 '그림으로 무얼 할 수 있을까?'로 시작하며, 작업 진행과정을 살짝 뒤틀어 형식주의는 되도록 뒤로 미뤄놓고 세상으로 뛰어들고 있다. 이번 전시는 최근 내가 만난 풍경과 부딪치고 소요하고, 자주 미소 짓다가 하릴없이 멍할 때 거기에 주저앉아 끌어올린 것들이다. 그것들은 세상 속 무언가를 잽싸게 포획한, 그렇지만 알듯 모를 듯한 감각에 의존해 그려놓은, 그래서 모호하지만 더 선명해진 그림이다. 그렇게 완성된 네모의 그림들이 동그란 프레임으로 재구성되었다. 거기에 맨드라미, 인왕산, 밤의 정원-우주인, 길 위에서-내몽골 등이 있다. 그리고 '그림으로 무얼 할 수 있을까'하는 즐거운 짓은 동남아 여행을 하다 만난 케니와의 2인 전으로까지 진행되었다. 네모난 프레임의 그림은 그림 밖으로까지 길이 나있다. 재능 있는 작가들은 그림 밖의 공간까지 함께 그려 놓기 때문이다. 한편 동그란 프레임의 그림은 밖이 아닌 구멍 속으로 관람자를 깊게 끌어들이며, 어느 순간 관람자의 손을 놓고 슬쩍 빠진다. ■ 김태헌

I'm really happy that I decided to studies about arts when I was young. Because now I believe arts can apply to everything in our life. This story is about the spirit and human souls. I'm learning and doing artworks all of my life. I try to learn inside of my mind for deep in touch the people by my artwork. It's the wave of vibrations in thought to connect people. Just like we can't see our breath but we know it's true and there's the reality of life. I start a lesson by observing inside and outside myself. Because I believe if we want to know other people we must know our self before. I present all of the things by drawing, sketching, pastel color, watercolor, oil color, painting by coffee and etc. I wish my works can help everybody to know themselves. And the last I wish all of you have a great and wonderful life. ■ Kenny

It was on a bus during a journey to Southeast Asia that Kim Taeheon met Kenny. Their accidental encounter led to another connection, enabling them to participate in an exhibition of pictures together. With their drawings, begun in the world, these artists encounter a new world. ● Kenny, who majored in painting at a university in Thailand, teaches art to children every weekend, paints portraits, writes and illustrates for magazines, and writes biographies about elderly artists. He takes on various additional side jobs in order to continue his beloved painting work. From 2~3 a.m., in the dark of night, Kenny paints together with coffee, as if writing a daily journal. He wanders in search of an imaginary world, painting the world of souls, sometimes entering the pictures to examine his inner self. Kenny, who discovers himself through his relations with others, has come this far while learning everything necessary for survival in this busy and difficult life. Among his 333 Coffee Time drawings, 30 show his unique world through round frames representing the black night. ● The world of Kim Taeheon, shown through round frames of the white day, draws one's gaze deep inside. With old, obsolete windscreen pictures as ground, space men float around in the folk-style paintings, with everything blacked out but the necessary parts. The surreal situation, where past and future meet, moves us to ask, "What is this?" and to think again about the existing picture. In a world where everything so rapidly disappears and is forgotten, these paintings on discarded screens are given new life, forming a series of nine works known as Garden of Night: Space Man. These sensuous paintings pulled out from the world by Kim Taeheon present spectators with the pleasure of contemplation. "Nolja" Kim Taeheon, who encounters a new world every day through his painting, enjoys his present life and looks at the world with new vision in order to act through his work. ● What does the world mean to these artists and to us?
