이너 뷰 INNER VIEW

로비갤러리는 세 번째 여정으로 『이너 뷰 INNER VIEW』라는 전시를 선보인다. 언어를 매개로 한 소통을 인터뷰Interview라고 한다면, 『이너 뷰 INNER VIEW』는 이번 전시에서 선보이는 작업을 매개로 더욱 확장된 소통을 꾀하는 의미를 지닌다. 『이너 뷰 INNER VIEW』는 위영일과 김용관이 경기창작센터 레지던시를 거쳤다는 접점을 공유한다는 점에서 출발한다. 이들이 선보이는 작업을 통해 회화와 조각의 경계를 넘나들면서 회화에 던지는 근본적인 질문을 스스로 던지고 찾아가는 과정을 살펴볼 수 있다.

로비갤러리의 양쪽 출입구에는 김용관의 작업이 관객을 전시공간으로 이끈다. 그의 작업은 전시장의 안과 밖을 구분하고 전시의 시작과 끝을 알린다. 또한 이중 유리문으로 된 로비갤러리의 공간적 특성으로 이루어진 레이어를 통해 관객의 관념과 바라보는 물리적인 시점에 따라 유기적으로 변화하는 확장성을 지닌다. 이번 전시를 위해 제작된 이 작업은 주로 회화로 제작되었던 폐기된 풍경 시리즈의 연장선으로, 회화의 평면성을 넘어선 일종의 실험이라 할 수 있다.

김용관의 작업을 거쳐 공간 내부로 들어서면 위영일의 작업들이 다채롭게 펼쳐진다. 그의 작업에서 살펴볼 수 있는 다양한 시도들은 회화라는 매체에서 레이어가 어떻게 존재하는가에서 더 나아가 예술이라는 큰 틀 아래 자의적 설정이 어디까지 개입할 수 있느냐는 의문을 지속해서 제기한다. 이들의 작업은 언어가 지닌 한정적인 소통의 한계에서 벗어나 작가의 내면을 비춰 소통하고자 한다.

회화의 평면이라는 일반적인 명제를 여러 방식으로 해체하고 다시 엮어내는 이들의 작업은 관객과의 상호작용을 통해 비로소 완성된다. 작가라는 절대적인 주체의 신화를 비워내는 시도를 통해 관객이 능동적으로 개입하면서 작업은 자연스레 다양한 방식으로 읽히고, 쓰이고, 말하여질 것이다. 이러한 우리의 적극적인 수행의 과정을 통해 이 전시가 새로운 이정표로 제시되어 미술뿐만 아니라 우리의 삶을 되돌아보는 여정을 비춰주는 계기가 되었으면 한다. ■ 경기문화재단 로비갤러리

Lobby Gallery presents Inner View in its third round of project exhibitions. Just as an interview seeks to communicate through the medium of language, this exhibition is significant in that it pursues a mutual understanding through the medium of artwork. Wee Young-il and Kim Yong-kwan, two artists invited to this art show, took part in an artist-in-residence program at the Gyeonggi Creation Center. Their works on display at this exhibit demonstrate their endeavors to explore and pose underlying questions concerning painting that go beyond the boundaries between painting and sculpture. ● Kim Yong-kwan's work ushers viewers into the exhibition space at the two entrances of the gallery. It draws a distinction between the inside and outside of the space and heralds the beginning and end of the exhibition. His work retains organically altering expandability due to the spatial characteristics of the lobby gallery that consists of double glazed doors, depending on a viewer's notion and physical viewpoint. Newly produced for this exhibition, this work can be seen as an extension of Obsolete Landscape, a series consisting mainly of paintings. The inside space one steps into after passing through Kim's work is featured with Wee Young-il's works. Various attempts found in his works have continued to raise questions concerning how layers can exist in the medium of painting and to what extent arbitrary setting can be involved in the frame of art. ● Their works intend to reflect and communicate their inner worlds, departing from the limits of communication couched in language. Their works which deconstruct and reconstruct pictorial surfaces in diverse ways are finally completed through interactions with viewers. As viewers are aggressively involved in their works, they should be read, written, and talked about naturally in various manners while making forays into dispelling the myth of an absolute subject. This exhibition is expected to serve as a milestone in their art careers. It will also an opportunity for us to look back on the journey of our lives through the process of their active practices. ■ Lobby Gallery
