난지미술창작스튜디오는 국제교류를 위해 국외입주자프로그램, 국제 입주작가 교환프로그램 등을 운영하고 있습니다. 국외입주자 프로그램은 매해 입주신청과 심사를 거쳐 입주작가를 선발하고, 매 분기별 입주기간이 끝나는 시기에 맞춰 입주기간 동안의 성과를 보여주는 성과보고전을 개최합니다. 이번 전시에는 난지11기 3분기 입주 작가인 베이롤 지메네즈 Bayrol Jimenez, 자스민 슈하이틀 Jasmin Schaitl, 료 이케시로 Ryo Ikeshiro와 2017 난지 국제 입주작가 교환프로그램 참여작가 메튜 와드 Matthew Ward (아시아뉴질랜드재단(ANZF)), 신고 오타 Shingo Ota (뱅크아트1929 BankART1929) 가 참여합니다.

Jasmin Schaitl 자스민 슈하이틀 ● (Speak) Volumes 은 실 조각물(a thread sculpture), 잉크펜 드로잉, 그리고 라이브 퍼포먼스로 이루어져 설치 작품으로 세 부분은 몸의 존재와 부재 간의 균형을 촉구하고 그 가능성을 연다. (Speak) Volumes 은 창조를 위한 기본 매개로서 선의 개념을 따르는데, 조각물에서 선은 형체의 윤곽을 결정하고, 그 안의 빈 공간을 부각시킨다. 드로잉에서 선은 주변부를 채움으로써 몸이 차지한 공간을 정의한다. 퍼포먼스에서 선은 관객과 퍼포머를 결속시키는 연속적인 시간의 가닥(the continuous time-thread)이며 이를 통해 관객은 "시간 속에서 몸이 녹는" 것을 직접 경험하게 된다.

Matthew Ward 메튜 와드 ● 신체통합권(bodily integrity)의 전망은 많은 것들에 의존적이다. 페미니즘과 신체통합권은 서로 불가분의 관계라고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 모든 문화와 사람들에게 특정 식물들은 깊고 영적인 의미가 있는 동시에 의학과 실용적인 목적을 위해서도 사용된다. 이러한 사실을 마음에 깊이 새기면, 우리는 모든 사람들에게 이롭지 않으면서도 신체를 지배하는 권력 구조에 의문을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.

Shingo Ota 신고 오타 ● The End of the Special Time We Were Allowed: 이 작품에는 실험적 설치작품이 포함되어 있다. 작가는 27세 때 자살했던 친구의 자살노트를 갖고서 관객들이 자살 이후의 삶을 경험할 수 있는 기계장치를 만들어 자살에 대해 다시 한 번 생각해 볼 수 있는 공간을 만들고자 하였다. (이 작품은 인디다큐페스티발 Seoul Independent DOcumentary Film Festival과 뱅크아트1929 BankART1929의 지원을 받았습니다.)

BUG'S MUSIC BAR: 작가는 중고 생맥주 기계를 이용하여 사운드 시스템을 만들었다. 관객들은 이 기계를 통해 벌레의 소리를 느끼고 즐길 수 있으며, 그런 점에서 이 작품은 아주 작은 생명들의 존재에 대해 다시 생각할 수 있도록 하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. (이 작품은 뱅크아트1929 BankART1929의 지원을 받았습니다.)

Bayrol Jimenez 베이롤 지메네즈 ● The signs of kimchi: Jimenez는 드로잉과 글쓰기 간의 관계에 관심을 가지고 있다. 고대 샤머니즘에서 초월적으로 읽혀 미래나 운을 해석하고 예측하는데 사용되었다. 'The signs of kimchi' 에서는 한국에서 일상적으로 먹는 반찬인 김치를 상상의 언어를 창조하기 위한 요소로 사용하였다. 이 작업은 우선 일종의 서예를 위한 의식으로 시작하는데, 작가는 김치를 마치 서예의 붓놀림과 같이 종이 위에 던진다. 우연에 의해 종이 위에 남겨진 흔적들은 그 후에 시각적으로 해석되어 실험적 드로잉을 위한 요소로 이용되고, 이러한 요소들로 구성된 새로운 형식들이 만들어진다. The signs of failed drawings: 작가는 'The signs of Kimchi' 작품의 드로잉의 일부를 그가 레지던시 기간 동안 일상에서 소비하고 생긴 맥주 캔, 해초 포장물 등과 같은 쓰레기들을 섞어서 하나의 종이공예품으로 변형시켰다.

SeMA NANJI RESIDENCY runs various 'Exchange Program' and 'International Artist Program' for its international exchange. 'International Artists Program' is run to recruit overseas artists on a regular basis through the online application and the evaluation and holds International Artists Group Exhibition quarterly as report of performance produced for 3 months at the end of residency period. 『Nanji 11th International Artists' Group Exhibition』 features painting, drawing and installation works by NANJI 11th Season 3 artists in residence including Bayrol JIMENEZ, Jasmin Schaitl, Ryo Ikeshiro and Matthew Ward(Asia New Zealend Foundation), Shingo Ota(BankART1929) who are participated in 2017 NANJI International Artist Exchage Program. Jasmin Schaitl ● (Speak) Volumes consists of 3 parts, culminating in an installation: a thread sculpture, ink-pen drawings, and a live-performance. The 3 parts urge for a balance between, and open up possibilities of: the presence and the absence of body. (Speak) Volumes follows the idea of the line as the basic medium for creation. In the sculpture, the line defines the outline of the figure, and highlights the emptiness within. In the drawing, it defines the occupied space by the body through filling the surrounding. In the performance, the line is the continuous time-thread binding the audience together with the performer, and letting the "melting of body through time" be directly experienced by the viewers. Matthew Ward ● The future of bodily integrity is dependent on many things. It can be duly noted that feminism and bodily integrity are inextricably linked. The use of specific plants may have deep and spiritual meaning while also serve for medicinal and practical use that apply to all cultures and people. It is with this in mind that we may continue to question structures of power that govern bodies yet do not serve the best interests of all people. Shingo Ota ● The End of the Special Time We Were Allowed: In the The End of the Special Time We Were Allowed, Ota shows experiential installation. Using the suicide note of his friend who killed himself when he was 27 years old, Ota wrote the text. Using this text, the artist made the machine in which the audience experience the afterlife of the suicide. The artist aimed to make the place where we can rethink about problem of suicide. (With support from Seoul Independent DOcumentary Film Festival and BankART1929) BUG'S MUSIC BAR: In Ota's work BUG'S MUSIC BAR, the artist used the second hand draft tower of the bar to make the sound system. Through the machine, the audience can enjoy and feel the sound of bug's. The artist aimed to provoke and activate to re-think about the existence of the tiny livings. (With support from BankART1929) Bayrol JIMENEZ ● The signs of kimchi: Jiménez is interested in the relation between drawing and writing systems. In the rituals in ancient shamanism, that 'reads' objects out of their usual context, to predict the fortune and future. In Jiménez work The signs of kimchi, the artist used the popular daily dish of South Korea 'Kimchi', as an element to create imaginary signs. It begins with a video, showing a sort of calligraphy ritual, where the kimchi its been thrown into a sheet of paper, like a brush stroke gesture. The artist worked afterwords with the marks the kimchi left on the paper and used them as elements for experimental drawings that combined created new forms. The signs of failed drawings: In The signs of failed drawings the artist used part of the drawings of 'The signs of Kimchi' as a recycled material to construct objects that resemble rubbish. Jimenez transformed the drawings into a paper maché elements of his daily consumption life during the residency, such as beers, sea weed packages, plastic bags, etc. Ryo Ikeshiro ● The mixed-media installation is based on an exploration of the various effects of the regeneration of Susaek-dong and Sangam-dong in sound.
