2017-18 한영 상호교류의 해를 맞이하여 기획한 전시 『불협화음의 기술: 다름과 함께 하기』는 영국문화원의 소장품 중에서 다양한 배경과 연령대의 동시대 작가 16 명의 작품 약 26점으로 구성되었다. 이 전시는 1980년대부터 현재까지 영국에서 일어난 사회, 정치, 문화적 주요 사건과 활동을 배경으로 삼는다. 그러나 역사적 사실 자체보다는 영국 사회의 계층, 민족, 경제, 정치적 분열과 그 경계에 대하여 자신만의 언어와 목소리로 개입을 시도하는 예술가들의 태도와 실천을 살피는 데 전시의 주안점을 두고자 한다.

280여 점의 다양한 오브제와 자료들로 구성된 제레미 델러와 알란 케인의 「포크 아카이브」는 개인의 삶과 공동체의 모습을 통해 영국의 전통과 문화와 정체성을 들여다보는 토대를 마련한다. 이와 함께 차분한 일상 속에 새겨진 갈등과 분열의 흔적을 담은 마틴 파와 폴 그라함의 사진, 가장 진부한 이미지들로 동시대 영국의 초상을 유희적으로 담아냄으로써 오늘날 영국인이라고 칭한다는 것의 의미를 질문하는 그레이슨 페리의 거대한 태피스트리, 관습화된 영국 사회의 오래된 계급 문화를 풍자하는 마크 월린저의 비디오 설치작품은 영국 사회의 오랜 분열 양상을 다각도로 함축하여 제시한다.

한편, 모나 하툼, 루바이나 히미드, 존 아캄프라, 삼손 캄발루는 자전적 경험과 기억을 바탕으로 사회 안에서 다르게 존재한다는 것의 의미를 환기하며 그 사회에 비평적으로 도전하는 삶 자체를 시각 예술의 언어로 선보인다. 칼리 스푸너, 레이첼 맥클린, 볼프강 틸만스, 밥 앤 로버타 스미스, 에드 홀은 작가이자 사회의 구성원으로서 동시대 영국의 시급한 문제를 발화하며, 질리안 웨어링의 초기작과 함께 어우러져 정치적 입장의 다양성을 드러낸다.

불협화음을 낼지언정, 시끄럽게 울려 퍼지는 다양한 목소리들은 끊임없이 분열과 통합을 지속해나가는 영국 사회를 지탱하는 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 이러한 작가들의 시선과 외침은 다른 목소리와 이질적인 가치가 뒤섞여 공존하는 영국 사회와 공명하는 예술 실천의 흐름을 다각도로 살필 수 있게 한다. 영국의 가까운 과거로부터 새롭게 직조하여 현재 우리 앞에 놓인 이 전시는 사회에 개입하는 다양한 예술 실천의 모습을 살핌으로써 우리에게 보다 적극적으로 사회를 향해 각자의 고유한 목소리를 낼 것을 요청한다. 이를 통해 본 전시는 이와 같은 예술 실천이 사회 속에서 각기 다른 발화로 이루어진 불협화음의 공간을 생성하는 전략이 되기를 기대한다. ■ 서울시립미술관

□ 전시 연계 프로그램 ○ 자기-주도 가이드 - 옥인 콜렉티브(이정민, 진시우) - 전시장 내 상설 설치 「자기-주도 가이드」는 전시된 작품을 출발점 삼아 작품을 우회하거나 재해석하면서 소장품을 우리의 문맥에서 살려내는 매개적 역할을 한다. 전시된 작품에 주석을 달거나 작품에서 공통된 속성을 걸러내어 공감을 형성하는 지점을 드러내기도 하며, 질문을 던지기도 한다. 작품들 사이에 개입하듯 제시되는 이들의 목소리는 작품에 현재성과 다층적인 시점을 부여하며, 관객들의 능동적인 사유와 발화를 촉매하고자 한다. ○ 광장 세미나: '참여와 개입의 예술 실천'을 위한 공론장 - 구수현, 권혁빈, 박다함, 최빛나, 심소미, 이한범 - 비공개: 10월 13일, 11월 4일   공개 토론: 11월 10일 금요일 오후 4시-6시 「광장 세미나」는 지금 여기에서 각자의 방식과 태도로 예술 실천 혹은 운동을 수행하는 주체들로 구성된 모임이다. 이 세미나의 목적은 참여자들이 자신의 활동에 대해 자문하고, 평가하고, 스스로의 논리를 세워서 확장하는 것이다. 이렇게 개별 행위자들의 특이점이 무엇인지 꼼꼼히 따져봄으로써 '예술 실천'의 의미를 점검해 보고자 한다. 세미나는 비공개를 원칙으로 하되, 마지막 세미나는 공개 토론으로 진행하여 그 논의를 확장하고자 한다. * 11월 10일 공개 토론은 서울시립미술관 홈페이지를 통해 신청하실 수 있습니다. * 10월 13일, 11월 4일 세미나의 내용은 진(zine)의 형식으로 무료로 배포될 예정입니다. * 그 밖에 작가와의 대화, 워크숍, 청소년 프로그램, 강연 등 다양한 프로그램이 전시기간 동안 진행될 예정입니다. 자세한 내용은 서울시립미술관 홈페이지(sema.seoul.go.kr)를 참고해 주세요.

To celebrate UK/Korea 2017-18 Creative Futures, The Art of Dissonance brings together 26 artworks from the British Council Collection by 16 contemporary artists from a diversity of backgrounds and generations. The works in this exhibition explore the social, political and cultural events that have shaped British artistic practice since the 1980s. Rather than focusing on historic narrative, participating artists examine the differences derived from social class and identity, and the negotiation of political and social division, through their individual practices, voices and artworks. ● Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane's Folk Archive contains over 280 artifacts, providing a provoking foundation from which to look into British traditions, cultures and identities. The photographs of Martin Parr and Paul Graham examine the traces of conflicts and divisions encoded in everyday life. Grayson Perry's large-scale tapestry tackles what it might mean to call oneself British today by combining themes common to the lives of communities and individuals, and Mark Wallinger's video installation gently undermines Britain's preoccupation with class and hierarchy. Mona Hatoum, Lubaina Himid, John Akomfrah and Samson Kambalu remind us of what it means to exist differently, and their works use personal experience and narrative to critically engage with ideas of identity and belonging. Works by Cally Spooner, Rachel Maclean, Bob and Roberta Smith, Wolfgang Tillmans and Ed Hall as artists as well as members of the society address some of the urgent issues facing present-day Britain, expressing a range of political positions and finding resonance with earlier work by Gillian Wearing. ● Together, the exhibition delves deep into the 'dissonance' inherent in any society, where different people come together to voice their individual and shared concerns. The diversity of subject matter explored demonstrates the richness of artistic practice that has emerged in Britain in response to social, cultural and political changes since the 1980s. Weaving together both new and historic artworks, the exhibition celebrates the artist's voice, suggesting the possibilities to make our own voice heard within society. We hope the exhibition will create a forum —a dissonant space—where each artist's voice may find its own expression. ■ SEOUL MUSEUM OF ART (SeMA)

□ Public Programme ○ Self-directed Guide - Okin Collective (Joungmin Yi, Shiu Jin) - Installed as part of the exhibition Self-directed Guide chooses artworks within the exhibition to reinterpret and revive within our own context, creating detours throughout the exhibition and opening up space for alternative readings. For example, the artists produce footnotes for chosen works, filter out some commonalities among them, and encourage sympathies between contexts or ask questions out of that shared understanding. Representing 'nowness', and offering multi-layered views, these voices intervene with the works on show and seek to activate responses and alternative interpretations from the audience. ○ Square Seminar: Forum for 'Artistic Practice of Participation and Intervention' - Soohyun Koo, Kwon Hyuk-bin, Park Daham, Somi Sim, Choi Binna, Lee Hanbum - closed for the members: 13 October, 4 November   Open to the public: 4-6pm Friday 10 November Square Seminar is a gathering of subjects involved in artistic practices or movements using their own methods / attitudes and taking place in the here and now. In this programme, participants are invited to question their own activities, evaluating and enhancing their critical self-awareness. Through this, it seeks to examine the singularity of each participant so as to reconsider the meaning of 'art practice'. Seminars are conducted in private, with the last session open to the public in order to broadenout the discussion. * You can apply to the open discussion on 10 November via SeMA's webpage(sema.seoul.go.kr). * The contents from two seminars held on 13 October and 4 November will be shared as zines for free.
