고희승은 구체적으로 계획하지 않은 채 작업을 시작하여 수많은 과정의 변화를 거쳐 마지막 결과에 다다른다. 홍수연은 우연적 현상을 배제하고 완벽에 가까운 계획을 세우고 치밀하게 통제된 과정을 통해 작업을 마친다. 전혀 다른 방법으로 접근하는 그들의 작업은 시각적으로 보여 지는 이미지를 넘어 끝없는 대화를 쌓아간다.

홍수연은 우연히 생겨난 듯한 형상들을 한 겹 한 겹 쌓아 올리며 내면 깊이 잠재되어 있는 자신의 이야기를 꺼내 놓는다. 작가 자신은 철저히 통제된 과정을 통해 작업한다지만 홍수연이 무의식 중에 만들어 내는 덩어리들은 추상의 유기적인 형태로 마치 계획 없이 손 가는 대로 그려진 듯하다. 여러 겹 쌓아 올려진 형상들은 매끄러운 화면 위에서 부드럽게 유영하며 조심스럽게 다른 덩어리에게 다가가 소곤거리는 듯, 속 깊은 이야기를 쉼 없이 하고 있다. 추상미술은 보는 이의 관점에 따라 다르게 읽혀지고 해석 되어진다. 관객은 작업의 과정과 방법적인 면에 초점을 맞추기 보다는 작품에서 느껴지는 감성으로 반응하게 된다. 각자의 기억에 따라 수백 가지 다른 해석을 만들어 내는 신비로운 힘을 홍수연의 그림은 가지고 있다.

거리를 다니며 담아온 사물의 흔적들, 이리 저리 만들어 놓은 기억의 작은 조각들을 끼우고 맞추어가는 고희승의 작업은 많은 이야기를 품고 있다. 언제부터인가 작가는 나무판을 애매하고 뭉뚝한 형상으로 만들어 구멍을 뚫고 표면을 조각칼로 파내기도 하면서 세상살이의 흔적을 만들어 간다. 조그만 금속조각이나 플라스틱, 돌조각 등을 구멍에 끼우고 맞추어 자신이 하고 싶은 이야기를 그 안에 풀어낸다. 처음 예견된 계획을 가지고 시작한 작업은 우연한 효과를 만나 변화되어 가면서 제자리를 찾는다. 그 과정의 흔적을 고스란히 남겨놓은 장신구는 누군가의 가슴 위에 부로치로 달리고 목걸이로 걸려 새로운 주인의 기억을 만들어 간다. 장신구라는 작은 구조물은 그 안에 비닐조각, 작은 나사못 하나까지도 값비싼 보석같이 귀한 존재로 자리 잡아 작가 자신의 모든 세계를 의미 있게 보여준다.

장신구의 작은 덩어리와 대비되는 그림 속의 커다란 덩어리들은 규모는 매우 다르지만 애매한 형상으로 겹겹이 쌓여 작가 자신들의 무의식 속에 잠긴 내면을 드러낸다. 자신들이 꺼내 보이지 못하는 이야기들을 그들은 작품을 통해 대화로 풀어내고 있다. 그 대화는 새로이 만나는 다른 이에게 전달되어 새로운 대화를 계속해서 만들어 간다. ■ 조정란

Heeseung Koh does not make concrete plans before beginning her work, but goes through a process of countless changes in order to reach her final result. Always trying to exclude spontaneous phenomena, Sooyeon Hong makes plans close to perfection and completes her work through a meticulously controlled process. The works of these artists, who take completely different approaches, go beyond the visible image to build up infinite dialogue. ● Sooyeon Hong stacks layer after layer of forms that appear to have been made accidentally, to reveal the stories deep down in her subconscious. Though the artist claims to work through a completely controlled process, the forms she makes feel like abstract organic shapes made spontaneously without plan, by letting her hands run free. The multiple layers of such shapes drift softly on the smooth picture-plane, as if they are carefully approaching one another to whisper something, to endlessly tell stories from deep inside. Abstract art is read and interpreted differently according to the viewer's perspective. Spectators generally do not focus on the process or methodology of the work, but respond to the work with the emotions they feel. Sooyeon Hong's paintings have the mysterious power to create hundreds of different interpretations according to each viewer's memory. ● The work of Heeseung Koh, who pieces together the traces of objects she collects from the street and the little fragments of memories she has made, contains many stories. Since some time ago, the artist has made traces of daily life by cutting a wooden board into obscure and stumpy shapes, making holes through them and sculpting them with a carving knife. Then she fits small pieces of metal, plastic or stone in the holes to unravel the stories she wants to tell. These accessories, which plainly reveal the traces of the artist's work, wherever her thoughts and hands have taken her, become brooches on others' chests or necklaces on others' necks, creating memories for their new owners. Even pieces of plastic and small screws take their places in the small jewelry structures, existences as precious as expensive gems, symbolically presenting the whole world of the artist. ● The large shapes in the paintings, which contrast with the small shapes in the jewelry, are of a very different scale, yet are stacked up in obscure forms to reveal the artist's inner thoughts, submerged in the unconscious. Thus the two artists are unravelling the stories they cannot take out and show directly, through their works in the form of dialogue. This dialogue is then conveyed to someone they meet for the first time, to continuously generate new dialogue. ■ Jungran Cho
