Gyre 자이어

갤러리바톤은 김윤철(Yunchul Kim, b. 1970)의 개인전 『자이어(Gyre)』를 8월 30일부터 9월 30일까지 압구정동 전시 공간에서 개최한다. 국제적 명망의 콜라이드상(Collide International Award 2016, CERN, Swiss) 수상자 이자, 다양한 매체에 대한 실험과 통찰을 기반으로 한 과학과 예술의 융복합성을 추구해온 작가의 주요 신작이 소개된다. ● 김윤철은 유체역학과 메타물질의 예술적 잠재성을 발견하는 작가다. 눈에 보이지 않는 초미세 입자와 유체, 자기장, 광결정, 나노 입자 등 물질이 지닌 성질을 연구하며 예술과 과학의 접점을 찾는 그는 과학 물질을 자유자재로 다루며 질료의 성질을 연구해 예술작품에 효과적으로 활용한다. 인공물질을 다루지만 그는 주로 자연에서 영감을 얻는다. 나아가 문학, 고전 회화, 철학과 이론을 바탕에 둔 담론에 주목하면서도 물질을 직접 경험하고 만지는 행위에 가장 중점을 둔다. 그가 끊임없는 아이디어 스케치와 실험을 거쳐 만든 결과물은 전통적인 예술에서는 볼 수 없는 독특한 시각 효과를 자랑한다. 마치 3D 환영과 같은 특수 효과를 만들어내는 것이다.

이번 개인전에서 선보이는 김윤철의 신작 '세 축의 기둥'과 '나선' 역시 환상적인 일루젼을 선사한다. 나선형, 소용돌이 를 뜻하는 『자이어』라는 전시 제목처럼 그가 만든 물질은 마치 파도와 같은 특수한 결을 만들며 수직하고 하강한다. 각기 다른 성질의 물질을 하나의 유리관에 넣었을 때, 그 물질은 서로 섞이지 않은 채 하나의 경계면을 만든다. 유체의 열팽창과 열전도성의 차이로 물질은 실내의 미세한 온도 변화에도 민감하게 반응하고 움직인다. 유체가 만들어낸 경계면은 때로는 부풀어 오르기도 하고 때로는 위아래로 자리를 바꾸기도 한다. 외부의 물리적인 개입이 없이도 유체는 유리관 밖의 세계와 에너지를 교환하며 미세한 출렁임을 멈추지 않는다. 유리병 속에서 움직이는 두 유체는 우주적인 감각을 일깨우며 관람객의 시각을 자극한다. ● 이처럼 김윤철이 다루는 물질은 각기 고유의 성향을 지닌다. 작가는 각 물질이 지닌 성질이 인간이 감각하고 인식하는 세계 너머에 있다고 말한다. 단지 인간의 사고만으로는 물질의 고유 성향이 어떤 방식으로 발현할지 예측할 수 없다. 작가는 마치 파도처럼 자유자재로 결을 만드는 작품 앞에 선 관람객에게 '근원적 바라보기'를 제안한다. 일반적으로 사물을 구성하는 유체로만 존재했던 특수한 물질을 겉으로 끄집어낸 작품을 통해, 관람자가 물질의 근원을 직시하고 직접 경험할 수 있도록 유도한다. 과학 물질이 만들어내는 아름다운 움직임은 마치 사운드의 파장을 연상시키며 갤러리에서는 보기 드문 독특한 광경을 제공한다. 과학의 세계를 예술로 끌어온 김윤철의 작품을 감상하며 익숙한 세계 너머에 존재하는 근원을 상상해볼 수 있다.

김윤철 작가는 추계예술대와 쾰른매체예술대(Academy of Media Arts Cologne)에서 수학하고, 고등과학원 (KIAS) 초학제연구단의 책임연구원을 역임하였다. 송은아트스페이스(몽환포영로전, 2016), 북경 미디어아트 비엔날레(2016), 하르트바레 미디어 예술협회(HMKV, Dortmund, 2016), 국립현대미술관(Super Nature, 2014), 대안공간루프(백시, 2014), 오스트리아 응용미술관(MAX, Vienna, 2013) 전시 등을 통해 테크놀로지에 대한 심오한 이해를 기반으로 한 탈 장르적인 일련의 작업들을 선보여 왔다. ■ 갤러리바톤

Gallery Baton is delighted to announce a solo exhibition of the work of Yunchul Kim (b. 1970, Korean) entitled 'Gyre' from 30th August to 30th September in Apgujeong, Seoul. 'Gyre' includes new installations by Kim who has been pursuing the convergence between science and art driven by in-depth research and a unique insight into various mediums and materials. ● Yunchul Kim is an artist who discovers and explores the artistic potential of fluid mechanics and meta-materials. Researching properties of certain substances including photonics crystals, nano particle, magnetic field, fluids and invisible sub-micron particles, Kim has sought the interface between art and science. He deals with scientific matter and studies the nature of materials in order to effectively adopt them for his works of art. Though he works in artificial media, he is often inspired by nature. He also examines discourses on literature, classical paintings, and philosophy, however he still emphasizes the actions of experiencing and touching materials. Thus, his constant idea-sketching and experiments allow his artworks to gain unique visual effects, which are rarely found in conventional art; he produces a special impression similar to a three-dimensional hallucination. ● In this exhibition, Kim reveals new pieces presenting fascinating illusions: 'Triaxial Pillars II' and 'Gyre.' As the exhibition title 'Gyre' (meaning spiral or swirl) suggests, the materials selected by the artist rise and descend, creating movements reminiscent of sea waves. When specific substances are injected into a glass tube, they are not blended but rather generate boundaries. Due to the differences of the fluids' thermal expansions and conductivities, the contents respond to subtle changes in temperature. The boundary surfaces generated by the fluids are at times inflated, and their positions are changed. Without any physical interference from outside, the fluids never cease their delicate motion, and exchange energy with the outer world of the glass tube. The interplay of these two fluids stimulate the spectators' vision by giving rise to a sense of the cosmos. ● In this regard, each medium treated by Kim possesses its peculiar tendency. Kim noted that traits of materials exist beyond the realm of human sensation and awareness so that human cognition is not able to anticipate which modes certain materials would manifest in. Accordingly, the artist suggests 'Fundamental Gazing' to the audience who encounters the work that liberally forms waves as the ocean does. By employing specific matter that usually remains as constituent fluids in objects, Kim encourages viewers to confront and directly experience their origin. As the elegant movements of these scientific media resemble the wavelengths of sounds, the works unfold a distinctive scene which is rarely seen in a gallery. By bringing science into the territory of art, Kim's practice enables spectators to imagine a source outside of our familiar world. ● The exhibition 'Gyre' reveals two site-specific pieces, 'Triaxial Pillars II,' and 'Gyre' that present Kim's themes of materiality and advancements in scientific technology. The artworks create a feast of diffusion and traces of light along with the flow of fluid constantly shifted by the coexistence of control and neglect. They consequently allow spectators not only to encounter moments they have never experienced, but also to contemplate the materials' origins. ● Yunchul Kim, a founder of 'Studio Locus Solus' and a chief researcher of 'Materiality,' a trans- disciplinary research program at Korean Institute for Advanced Study, gained public recognition by being selected as a winner of COLLIDE International Award hosted by CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire Geneva) in 2016. He is actively presenting his works at numerous leading galleries and museums such as National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA, Seoul, Korea), Asia Culture Centre (Gwangju, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), National Art Museum of China (Beijing, China), Austrian Museum of Applied Arts (MAK, Vienna, Austria), including solo exhibitions at SongEun Art Space (Seoul, Korea), Berlin Kuenstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, Garmany), Ernst Schering Foundation (Berlin, Germany). ■ Gallery Baton
