최근 우리 사회는 극도의 경쟁을 통해 많은 성과를 이루었다. 그러나 그에 비례하게 더 많은 병폐가 나타나고 있다. 기계화나 비인간적인 것이 사회전반에 통념처럼 되거나 옳고 그름까지 전도 되어 가는 세상이 되었다. 뉴스나 미디어를 통해 신경정신과적인 용어가 빈번히 들려오는 만큼 개개인은 피폐해져가고 있다. 외부의 자극에 참지 못하고 반응해서 자신의 분노나 욕구를 분출한다. 극단으로 치닫는 사회와 쉼 없는 삶이 우리를 절망으로 이끌어 가는 것을 누구나 잘 알고 있다. 나는 치유나 해결 보다는 가장 단순한 방법이 떠올랐다 그냥 막연하게 막아보는 것. 여성인물에 갑옷을 만들어 씌워 보았다. 이것으로 내 작품과 날 보호하고 싶었다. 유치하지만 내 상황이나 사회현상에 저항하겠다는 소심한 의지이다.

이전의 작업에서는 표피에 집착했었다. 최근 작업에서도 표피의 연작을 작업하고 있다. 전작에서 표피는 나에게 인간의 가식이나 넘을 수 없는 소통의 장벽을 의미했지만 지금의 표피(갑옷)은 무의식의 자기보호인 것이다. 이는 나약한 인간으로서 신에게 의지한다거나 외부의 심리적인 자극 또는 압박으로부터 스스로 작동하는 가장 원초적인 보호이다. 작품에 나타나는 갑옷은 물리적이기 보다는 심리적인 보호막에 더 가깝다고 봐야 할 것이다.

작품 속 알루미늄 판은 얇고 가볍지만 나의 내부에서 알루미늄 판(갑옷)은 너무나도 두툼해서 그 어느 것도 두렵지 않다. 나는 내게 이 심리적인 판이 마치 험난한 세상을 살아가는 강력한 보호막이라고 자기암시를 한다. 저 허공으로부터 주어지는 이 보호막(갑옷)은 기차처럼 달려가는 우리사회를 살아가는 사람누구나 입어보고 싶지 않을까? ■ 박금만

Primary Defense Mechanism ● The recent milestones in our society have not come without dire consequences to humanity. These achievements , however significant , have inadvertently created repercussions to the human race. Mechanization , dehumanization , these are just some of the adverse effects of our progress. These factors combined with the current social climate , where both right and wrong are evangelized through the news or social media, evoke a basic primal instinct that is within us. The primeval urge to protect ourselves from external aggressors threatening our sense of humanity. To be able to cope with this social phenomenon, we have to come up with a simple viable solution to survive. This is what I want to express through my artwork. To cover the human body with thin armor, slightly blocking but not totally oblivious to external factors . ● In my previous work, I have cited the epidermis as the most basic barrier against showing one's true form. To present a physical surface that conforms to society's standards . To shield oneself from hurt or criticism by covering one's physical flaws . In contrast, the armor in my present work signifies a shield of protection from psychological oppression threatening our humanity or individuality. The aluminum plate that is seen in my work may be thin and light, however, the armor that is innate in us is strong and thick . With this we must not fear. This psychological armor within us is unseen but ever present, providing us with a powerful barrier to enable us to live in this harsh world. ■ Gold Man, park
