Approach-ing

급변하는 사회 속에서 개인 내면의 욕망은 과거에 비해 중요해졌다. 허나 이 같은 욕망은 쉽게 해소되지 않는다. 도덕적 규칙이 정해져있는 사회라는 큰 틀 안에서 개인의 욕망을 표출하기란 쉽지 않다. 따라서 시대에 맞춰 개인은 사회적으로 억압된 욕망들을 표출하기 보다는 자신의 깊은 곳에 감춘다. 더불어 욕망의 폭과 깊이는 다양하고 넓어지고 있다. 보편적인 욕망은 쾌락과는 구분되는데 자아실현이라는 성취를 통해 느끼는 쾌락은 단순히 1차적으로 느끼는 쾌락일 뿐이다. 그 이면에는 본능적 욕망이 존재한다. 인간의 본능적 욕망은 개개인의 환상 속에 어떠한 형태로 존재하며 유기적으로 변화한다. 환상 속의 욕망은 일정한 강도를 유지하면서 개개의 내면에 내재된다. 내재된 욕망들은 사회의 규칙에 의해 표출되지 못한 모습일 것이다. 작가는 내면에 존재하고 있는 어떠한 형태를 보여주는 것이 아닌 발현시키기 위한 방향성만을 제시한다.

의식이 있는 상태에서 환상에 내재된 자신을 관찰하게 하는 행동은 강압적일 수 있다. 이에 맞는 상황을 주는 것 자체 또한 강제적이고 우울, 추락, 밀폐된 개인의 삶으로 향하게 할 수 있다. 덧붙여 자신을 관찰하거나 자신의 주변을 돌아보는 것은 욕망을 직시하려는 행동이기 보다는 단지 나 자신을 속이고 자신의 페르조나(Persona)를 강화할 뿐이다. ● 정확한 방향을 드러내기 보다는 체험을 통해서 암묵적으로 발현한다. 본인의 작품은 가리거나 감추지 않고 적나라하게 상을 드러냄으로써 작품을 맞닥뜨려 졌을 때의 그 자체를 충실하게 제시한다. 우리의 감각을 직접 자극하고, 그로써 어떤 체험을, 즉 감각을 느끼는 체험을 매개해주는 것이다. ● 본인의 작품은 시각적으로 우리의 신경 시스템에 직접 작용시킨다. 원초적인 '감각'을 이용한 궁극적인 '본능'의 근본으로 향하게 한다. ■ 서동현

In a rapidly changing society, personal desires have become more important than in the past. However, such desires are not easily resolved. It is not easy to express one's desire in a large frame of society, since morals that prevail in the society may suppress its expression. Thus, the individuals have hidden their socially repressed desires deep inside themselves rather than expressing such desires outwards. In the meanwhile, the types, the breadth and the depth of the desire have been diversified, broaden and deepened. The desire, on the other hand, is different from the pursuit of pleasure. The pleasure is merely an outcome from the fulfillment of self-realization. There is native desire behind it. Human instinctive desires exist in any form and change dynamically with the individual's fantasy. The desire associated with the fantasy is inherent in each individual's mind. However, it may not have been expressed due to the morals of society. An artist should guide how to express such desires rather than showing any specific forms of desire. ● If one directly faces him- or herself enjoying their fantasy (or desire) yet with consciousness, one may feel embarrassed or even be hostile to oneself. Explicitly displaying the (socially repressed) desires and letting people watch it may lead to depression and a reclusive life. In addition, it may give adverse effects by not helping one to confront, admit and express their desire but reinforcing one's own "persona". ● Rather than expressing a specific direction towards one's desire, these art pieces tacitly manifest desires through experiencing them. These pieces reveal one's desire explicitly but in a way that people can experience and get inspired. By doing so, it stimulates our senses and thereby mediates the experience of expressing the desire. ● My work directly visualizes the desire. It connects the basic instinctive 'senses' to the ultimate cause of the human instinct. ■ SEODONGHYEON
