한국문화예술위원회(Arts Council Korea)의 후원으로 이루어진 기획초대전 『across』는 도시의 빠른 발전과 현대화 과정 그리고 여기서 쉽게 놓치게 되는 삶의 환경에 주목한 2인전이다. 이번 전시 『across』는 전시를 기획한 plan.d 갤러리1)의피터클루드(Peter Clouth) 큐레이터 그리고 전시 작가인 한스 요건 조에프커(Hans-Juergen Soeffker)와 박성연(Sungyeon Park) 세 사람이 전시 주제를 논의하고 다시 독일과 한국 도시 환경에 대한 의견을 이메일로 나누며 발전시켰다. 결국 작품 주제인 움직이는 현대 도시 모습은 카드보드(card board) 페인팅과 판화, 영상, 드로잉, 비디오 및 설치로 발전되었다.

인간은 다양한 감정을 가지고 있고 그것을 표출하거나 잠재적으로 내재하고 있다. 박성연은 도시인에게 감정은 어떤 것이고 감정의 무게와 속도는 어떻게 표현될 수 있는지 호기심을 갖고 있다. 그녀는 익숙한 도시 구조물과 그 안에서 발생하는 자연스러운 움직임을 전시장 내부로 가져온다. 이것은 도시사회의 보이지 않는 도시 분위기와 정서 등을 보여주는 것으로, 조용히 속삭이는 크고 작은 일상 공간의 움직임을 통해 공간 리듬을 조명해보는 것이다. 여기서 관람객의 감정은 다양한 갈래로 분화한다. 박성연은 2012년 국립현대미술관 고양창작스튜디오 교환작가 프로그램에 선정되어 뒤셀도르프(Dusseldorf)에 3개월 동안 거주하였으며, 이 기간 동안 작품을 준비하며 개인전을 한 바 있다. 이후 뒤셀도르프 plan.d 갤러리와 지속적인 교류를 통해 이번 전시를 함께 진행하게 되었다.

또 다른 전시 작가 한스 요건 조에프카는 토목 공학을 공부하고 자신이 성장하며 목격하였던 도시 풍경을 드로잉과 판화 형식으로 보여준다. 특히 건물과 자동차를 입체적으로 만들어 카드보드 페인팅과 함께 전시하는 방식을 통해 놀이(play)로서의 친근한 이미지를 보여준다. 유럽은 변화 속도가 상대적으로 느리지만 그럼에도 기존 풍경이 사라져가는 환경에 적응하기 위해서는 시간이 필요하다. 그래서 추억이 있는 공간이 허물어지고 지치지 않는 공사 소음과 익숙하지 않은 장면 연출이 누구에게나 낯설다. 한스 요건 조에프카는 도시 변화의 아쉬움을 건물과 자동차 드로잉과 페인팅으로 기록하고 있다. 두 작가는 표면적으로 드러나는 도시 발전과 그 순간 우리가 만났을 법한 감정을 여러 각도에서 조명해보고 있다. 얼굴 살갗을 치는 바람, 멘홀 밑으로 흐르는 물 소리, 천정의 낙수 소리로부터 보편적 공감대를 형성하고 있다. 그런 점에서 이번 전시는 서로 다른 배경을 갖고 있는 두 작가가 생각하는 도시에 대한 객관적 사실과 객관적 정보로부터 시작하여 결국 도시 움직임, 정서, 감정의 공감까지 이끌어낸다. ■ 박성연

Sponsored by Arts Council Korea, the invitational exhibition across presents the works of two artists who focused on rapid urban development and modernization, along with the issues of living conditions that are often overlooked in the process of the aforementioned trends. The artists Hans-Juergen Soeffker and Sungyeon Park have discussed and collaborated to further the theme of across with curator Peter Clouth of the gallery plan. d. by sharing their ideas on the urban environment of Germany and Korea via email. Ultimately, the kinetic images of modern cities as the theme of their works were manifested in the form of cardboard painting, engraving, video, drawing, and installations. ● Humans possess various emotions, which are either expressed or inwardly contained. Sungyeon Park has long held a sense of curiosity regarding the significance of human emotions to city-dwellers, and ways to express the weight and velocity of such emotions. She brings her reflections on familiar city structures and the natural movements occurring within them into the exhibition hall. Her works show the invisible urban atmosphere and sentiment, shedding light on the spatial rhythm by embodying the quiet whispers of movements in the small and large spaces in our everyday life. While observing her art, the audiences' emotions diverge in various directions. During her stay in Dusseldorf over three months for an exchange program under the 2012 Goyang Residency of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Korea, Sungyeon Park held a solo exhibition while creating artwork. She has since planned the exhibition across in continued collaboration with gallery plan. d. in Dusseldorf. ● Another host artist of the exhibition, Hans-Juergen Soeffker shares the urban sceneries that he personally witnessed during his formative years and his study of civil engineering through the media of drawings and engravings. In particular, he created three-dimensional figures of buildings and cars, which are displayed alongside cardboard paintings to present familiar and friendly images as a way to "play." Although the pace of change is relatively slow in Europe, it is a time intensive task to adjust to an environment in which familiar scenery is fading away. Therefore, the destruction of places that embody memories, the ceaseless noise of construction sites, and the appearance of new and unfamiliar landscapes present a strange experience for everyone. Soeffker records his regret over the changing urban scenery through his drawings and paintings of buildings and cars. The two artists cast light on the outward appearance of urban development and the various emotions that we may have faced upon witnessing the subsequent changes. They create a kind of universal bond of sympathy from the wind blowing on our faces, the sound of water running deep under a manhole, and the sound of raindrops falling from the ceiling. In this respect, this exhibition originates from the objective facts and information possessed by the two artists of different backgrounds, and ultimately leads to the universal observation of urban movements to arouse shared emotions and feelings. ■ Sungyeon PARK
