식물들의 밤.The Night of the floras.

식물이 주인이 된 밤의 이야기 ● 박혜은 작가가 이번 전시에서 보여주는 작업들은 어린 시절 짧은 기간 살았던 낡은 주택에 대한 기억과 향수로부터 시작되었다고 한다. 그래서인지 사진으로 담아낸 그의 작업에는 오래된 기와 지붕과 낮은 담장을 타고 흐르는 나무 넝쿨 그리고 이름 모를 식물들이 등장한다. 물론 그 이미지들은 어린 시절 기억 속 그 공간은 아니다. 작가가 최근에 작업을 하면서 기억을 더듬듯 채집한 유사한 장소들의 이미지들이기 때문이다. 그런데 작가는 어린 시절의 기억과 유사한 현실 속 장소를 찾아내서 이미지를 포착하는 것만이 아니라 이 이미지를 변형시키고 교차시켜 상상 속 기억의 이미지들로 탈바꿈시키고 있다.

이 이미지들은 대부분 밤의 세계이다. 작가는 이러한 작업에 대해 '식물들의 밤'이라는 주제를 제시하고 있다. 작가의 말에 의하면 인간들의 낮의 세계와 달리 밤의 세계는 나무와 같은 식물들이 주인공이 되는 것처럼 느껴졌다고 한다. 해가 지고 사람들이 집안으로 들어가 잠들어버리자 식물들의 세계가 펼쳐진 것이다. 작가의 말과 그의 작업 이야기를 듣다 보면 어린 시절에 대한 꿈 속을 잠시 들여다 보고 있는듯한 착각을 하게 된다. 작가는 그의 작업에서 마치 스토리텔러가 된 것처럼 식물의 세계에 대한 이야기를 들려주고 있는 것 같다. 그래서 그의 현실 속 공간을 사진으로 담아낸 것임에도 현실과는 멀찍이 떨어져 있고 오히려 기억 속이나 꿈 속에 있었을 듯한 공간과 닮아 있다. 태양 빛 아래 선명한 현실을 떠나 한 밤중에 달빛 아래서 보게 된 세계는 인간이 더 이상 인간들만의 세계가 아니라 말없던 식물들이 바람 소리로 대화하고 노래하는 공간이었던 것이다. 낮에는 분명히 낡은 기와집에 허물어진 담장들만 보였지만 달빛 아래 세계는 형광색의 오색찬란한 꿈속의 공간으로 변화되어 버린 것이다.이제 현실은 기억 속 공간과 어우러져 편집된듯한 상상의 세계로 변형되어 작가의 작업 속에 저장된다. 그의 작업은 기억 속과 과거와 현재가 융합되어 있고 꿈과 상상이 혼재되어 있다. 그렇기에 그의 작업을 이야기 듣듯 몰입하게 되면 피터팬처럼 어린 시절로 되돌아가 있는 자신을 발견하게 될 것이다.그의 작업은 과거의 기억과 현실의 공간이 융합되어 있기에 결국 시간이라는 좌표가 무의미하다.

시간 좌표뿐만 아니라 그의 작업은 개별적 기억 공간의 경계를 허물어뜨리기도 한다. 작가의 작업을 보다 보면 그의 작업이 작가의 기억에 대한 이야기로부터 출발한 것이지만 결코 작가의 기억만은 아닌 것 같은 느낌이 든다는 점을 느끼게 될 것이기 때문이다. 사실 작가 역시 그의 기억과 유사한 장소를 편집하고 이를 여러 겹의 레이어로 혼합한 것이기에 작가의 기억 그 자체는 아니다. 그렇기에 기억을 공유하기 쉬운 형태로 다가온 것이리라고 본다. 한국에서 도시 변두리에서 살았었다면 누구든 한번 가 보았을 듯한 장소의 이미지들이지만 달빛아래 식물들이 주인이 된 밤의 세계로 탈바꿈하게 되자 꿈과 기억을 현실로 소환하는 장치가 되고 있는 것이다. ● 박혜은 작가는 그의 작업에서 이처럼 상상의 공간을 열어 보여주고 있기에 시간의 흐름을 거슬러 올라갈 수 있게 하고 공유 기억의 세계를 나누게 만든다. 어린 시절로 돌아가 그때에는 보지도 듣지 못했을는지도 모르는 식물들의 세계, 식물들의 이야기를 듣고 볼 수 있도록 만들어주고 있는 것이다. 작가는 이렇게 그의 작업에서 기억과 꿈의 세계에 대한 안내자가 되어 마치 달빛 아래의 세계로 돌아간다면 다른 세계를 만날 수 있다고 이야기 해주고 있는 것 같다. 보이지 않았던 세계가 보이고 들리지 않았던 소리가 들릴 거라고. ■ 이승훈

Story of plants that become the owner of night. ● Artist Hye Eun Park's work exhibited at CYART Space comes from a memory and longing of childhood years when she had once briefly lived in an old house. Maybe this is why elements such as old roof tiles, vines and nameless plants growing near short wall fences are the "main characters" in her work. However, these elements are not the ones she remembers from her childhood. This is because it is only a recollection of images that vaguely depict her childhood. The artist not only finds such places that look similar to the one from her childhood, she takes the images, transforms and intervein the images into a new image. ● Most of the images take place during the night and thus the artist names the theme as "The Night of the Floras". Artist Park says that during the night it feels as if the trees and plants are the main stars which differs from the world of light for humans. When the sun sets and humans go home and fall asleep, the world of plants come to life. Listening to her story and looking at her work, one finds the illusion of visiting one's childhood again. It almost seems that the artist has become the story teller and is delivering the message of what plants have to say. This is why although her work is a picture of an actual place, it looks more like one that is far from reality and closer to a certain place inside our dreams. The world under the moonlight during the night is a place that plants whisper and sing to each other through the wind. During the light of day only old house and the crumbled walls are evident, but under the moonlight the same places changes into a mystic dream like place using five neon colors. Now, the picture of the real location in present time and site from past childhood is mixed into one imaginative surreal place in the artists memory yet again. Thus, the past as the artist remembers it and the current location on the canvas takes place in a mix of imagination and dream. Listening to artist Park, you easily find yourself going back to your childhood just like Peter Pan. Since her work is a fusional space between reality and the past memory, time as a coordinate is useless. ● Her work not only tears down the barrier of time but also personal space in one's memory. This is because the audience is able to feel that each narrative of the work starts from her memory but the last output is not just about the memory itself. Actually, the artist herself uses many different layers of the actual picture that is similar to the location from her childhood memory and then finally blends the layers together. Thus, the artists' own memory is transformed into a piece that can be easily be shared with the viewer. Such locations and images are places one might come by easily if living in the city suburbs of Korea, however they are used as a summoning device that turns reality into a mystical world of dreams and memory where plants are the owner of the night, under the moonlight. ● Like so, artist Hye Eun Park opens an imaginative space that allows the audience to tread back in time and share the world in her memory. Thus, her work invites you to go back to your childhood and focus on the world of floras, listen to the story of the plants which you never might have seen or heard of at that age. Through her work, artist Park is the guide inviting you to visit a new world, a world under the moonlight and is showing you a world of dreams and memory, almost whispering to you that you will hear what you have never heard before and see what you have never seen before. ■ Seung Hoon Lee
