Absent Presence

시각의 변화 ● 네델란드 엔쉐데 미술학교에서 미술을 전공한 플로리안 로지어는 부지불식간에 깊은 어두움으로 빠져들게 하는 흑백의 우울한 색조의 판넬들을 전시하고 있다. 작품들은 사진을 디지털로 프린트한 것이라는 사실이 잘 믿어지지 않는다. 자세히 들여다보면 작품이 정성스레 그린 손 그림처럼 보이지만, 그것들은 정밀하고도 극사실적인 방식으로 나온 것이다. 소소한 편차나 부정확성들이 오늘날까지도 사진 기술에 잔존하지만 이제 그 모든 것은 사라져 가고 있다. 작가의 작품 소재의 일부는 인터넷에서 가져온 것이다. ● 하늘에서 내려다 본 공업지대의 이미지들은 추상적으로 처리되어 회로판 같은 모습으로 변형된다. 이들 연작의 제목은 '부재하는 현존"이다. 존재가 사라진 것이다. 명제가 붙지 않은 또 다른 연작들은 칙칙하고 괴기한 풍경 속에서 무언가를 기다리고 있는 사람들은 보여준다. 한 소녀가 높은 콘크리트 빌딩 앞에서 버스나, 아니면 다른 어떤 것을 기다리며 서있다. 정장을 한 아프리카인은 벽토가 떨어져나간 거대한 벽 앞에서 길을 잃고 서있다. 고도(Godot)는 오지 않을 것이고 에스트라공(Estragon) 역시 아직 도착하지 않았다. 그리고 이 어두움만 있을 뿐. ■ 쿤스트제너 라이프찌히

나는 디지털 이미지를 고해상도로 처리하는 독자적 방식으로, 잃어버린 시간과 공간에 대한 인상 깊은 가상적 은유들을 만들어낸다. 이들 작품은 고발로 보이지 않는다. 다만 안타까운 기다림의 우울한 변주곡에 젖어 있을 뿐이다. ● 오늘날 사실과 허구를 구분하는 일은 점점 어려워지고 있다. 우리는 더욱 긴밀하게 상호 연결되어 가고 있는 미디어와 인공세계에 둘러싸인 채, 초실재의 세계에서 살고 있다. 역설 같지만, 우리의 기술이 진보하고 우리의 지식이 확장될수록, 우리는 오히려 실재로부터 더욱 차단된 채 플라톤의 동굴의 어둠 속에 더욱 깊이 갇히게 된다. ● 나는 지각의 조작과 가상세계의 창조를 다루고 있다. 그것을 위해서 사진 매체를 이용하는데, 최초의 사진을 전혀 새로운 어떤 것으로 바꿈으로써, 절대적 객관성의 반복이라는 것에 문제를 제기하는 것이다. 나의 이미지들은 더 이상 우리 주변 세계의 단순한 재현물로서 역할하지 않는다. 대신에 그 이미지들을 가져오는 순간에 내재해 있던 나의 주관적 느낌에 대한 기록으로 변형된다. 그것들의 광대한 공허는 너무나 무뎌진 우리 일상의 감각과 강렬한 대조를 이루는, 기괴하고도 영원한 침묵이다. ● 세계 곳곳에서 인간이 바꾸어 놓은 풍경에 대한 항공 사진 연작은 구글 어스가 찍은 수십장의 스크린 샷에 기반한 것이다. 이들 이미지는 좀 더 강한 깊이감과 장소감을 만들어내기 위해서, 그리고 외로움과 주변환경의 무심함을 일깨우기 위해서 그 후에 조작을 가한 것이다. 전통적인 사진의 느낌으로 만든 것이 아니고, 지구 표면을 궤도 비행하는 여러 기계들이 자동 처리과정에서 찍은 수백장의 사진 가운데서 골라내어 만든 것이다. 도저히 접근할 수 없이 높은 시점에서는 작가라는 존재가 더는 필요 없는 것이 된다. 이미지에서 보이는 패턴들은 사람의 흔적이 보이지 않는 대규모 농업과 삼림 파괴의 흔적들이다. 지표면에 새겨진, 부재하는 현존의 발자국이다. ■ 플로리안 로지어

'Absent Presence' is an ongoing series of arieal images which depict human altered landscapes found all over the world. The images are composed out of images taken by various geological survey programs. Hundreds of pictures are stitched together and further manipulated to forge a sense of depth and place and to evoke an atmosphere of solitude and detachement of their sourrounding. Not being created in the traditional sense of photography, but rather fabricated and selectively choosen from millions of images taken via an automated process of multiple machines orbiting earth's surface, the creator's presence is no longer necessary. The patterns visible in the images are marks of extensive agriculture and industrialization. Fooprints and subaerial engravings of an absent presence. ● In our present time it becomes increasingly harder for us to distinguish between fact and fiction. We live in a hyperreal world, surrounded by and gradually becoming more and more interconnected with the media and artificial worlds. We percieve reality through artificial eyes, sensing the world through third party observers. Paradoxical, it seems, the more our technology advances and the more our knowledge grows, the deeper we are going into the darkness of Plato's Cave, shutting us down from reality even more. In his work Florian Rosier deals with the manipulation of perception and the creation of virtual worlds. For that he utilizes the medium of photography and challenges its reputition of absolute objectivity by changing the initial picture into something completely new. His images no longer act as a mere representation of the world around us but instead transform into recordings of the subjective feeling that inhabited the moment they were taken. Their vast emptyness radiates an eerie, eternal silence which forms a strong contrast to the sensual overkill of our everyday life. ■ Florian Rosier

A Change of View Rosier, who studied Fine Art in Enschede, The Netherland, is showing panels in gloomy black and white tones, drifting into deep blacks. The fact that they are digital printed photographs is hard to believe. They are presented in an exact and hyperrealistic fashion, on closer inspection though they seem to be carefully crafted paintings. All the minor deviations and imperfections, which are present even with todays photographic techniques, are being removed. Some of his material is taken from the internet. Aerial images of industrial areas transform into the likeness of circuit boards by the means of abstracting manipulation. The series is called 'Absent Presence', the presence has disappeared. Another series, which is untitled, shows people in a dull and eerie enviroment, waiting for something. A young girl is standing in front of a concrete tower building in expectation of things to come, maybe a bus, maybe something else. An african man in suit is standing lost in front of an enormous wall with crumbling plaster. Another man is surrounded by giant transport bags. Godot is not coming, even Estragon has not arrived yet. And then this darkness. Thanks to a highly developed personal method od digital image manipulation Florian Rosier manages to create impressive imaginary metaphors of a lost time and space. They do not seem accusatory, but saturated by a depressive variation of impatience. ■ Kunstszene Leipzig
