'텀블링박스' 속으로 ● 강숙의 직업은 콘티작가이다. 콘티작가란 영화, 드라마 및 애니메이션에 등장하는 인물 및 캐릭터의 성격, 연출방향 등을 파악하기 위해 감독, 촬영감독, 컴퓨터 그래픽 감독, 무술감독, 특수효과 감독 등과 협의를 통해 시나리오(대본)를 분석하고, 이야기의 전개순서 및 배정 시간을 구분. 주요 장면을 효과, 소품, 분장, 음악, 조명, 카메라앵글, 시간이나 기타 유의사항과 함께 그림으로 기술하는 즉 촬영할 장면을 미리 이미지화하는 직업이다.

발터 벤야민은 영화와 관련하여 "...한편으로 우리의 삶을 지배하는 필연성에 대한 인식을 증가시키고 다른 한편으로는 우리가 전혀 상상하지 못했던 엄청난 유희 공간을 확보해 주는 것이다." 라고 했고, 베르그송은 그의 저서 『창조적 진화』 중, '영화적 환영(Cinematographic Illusion)'을 설명하는 과정에서 이미지라는 순간적인 파편들의 생성 과정을 정의하면서 "...우리의 지각은 실제의 흐름이나 운동을 신체의 물리적 장치(감관, 신경계 등) 혹은 지식의 장치(사유)를 통해 스냅샷을 찍듯이 외부의 자극을 수용한다."라고 했다. 이는 모두 영화, 드라마, 광고 등의 영상물이 '카메라의 렌즈를 통해 그것을 다루는 이의 주관적인 관점으로 삶의 통찰에 대한 단편적인 이미지를 만들어 내는 것이라는 부분에 초점을 두고 있다. ● 이러한 관점에서 볼때 콘티 작가는 어쩌면 영화 및 영상물의 작업 안에서 가장 날것의 관점을 가지고 영화가 가지고 갈 시각적 양태를 형성하는 자리에 있는 작업자일 것이다. ● 그러한 콘티 작가가 바라보는 작가 자신의 삶에 대한 단편적인 기억과 이미지들. 그녀가 주관적으로 인지하는 그녀 삶에 일어나는 필연성들, 그리고 그녀를 반응하게 하는 여러가지 외부의 자극들. 그것에서 오는 단편적인 이미지들이 전시장 가득 텀블링 하게 만드는 것이 이 전시의 의도이다.

"순간들을 순식간에 그려내는 방식으로 창작되었다. 허리에 고무줄로 연결한 추가 내몸을 따라 돌 며 멀어졌다가 가까워지고 빙빙 휘감았다가 강하게 풀리듯 그 기억을 프레임에 잡아 가두는 놀이다. 그것들이 나를 스쳐가는 순간을 드로잉으로 캔버스에 전사했으며, 정교하지도 자세하지도 않지만 온전히 내 그림이라는 생각이 든다." 라고 말하는 작가는 20년이라는 시간 동안 수많은 영상물들의 콘티 작업을 통해 다양한 군상들의 순간을 잡아냈듯이, 이번엔 자신의 소소하지만 자세하게 살아내는 삶의 순간들을 휘몰아치는 기억으로 그려낸다. 사실 작가는 '콘티'라는 수식어를 달기 이전에 '동양화'를 전공하는 미술 학도였고, '콘티작가'라는 프로의 길을달리면서도 순수 미술 작가로써의 작업의 맥을 잇는 노력을 끊임없이 해왔기에, 그녀가 말하는 '온전한 내 그림'이라는 한 마디에 더 큰 울림이 생긴다. ● 휘몰아 치는 순간들과 텀블링하는 기억들. 외부의 자극에 다소 특별한 방법으로 반응해내는 작가의 소소한 내면의 에피소드들 속에서 관객도 같이 텀블링 할 수 있는 시간이 되길 소망한다. ■ 윤한경

Into the 'Tumbling Box' ● Kangsook is a storyboard(continuity) artist. A storyboard artist is a person who creates a panel or panels on which a sequence of sketches depict the significant changes of action and scene in a planned film, as for a movie, television show, or advertisement based on discussions with film producers, directors, computer graphic experts and many related experts in the filed to analyze and visualize the script before movie shootings start. ● In regard to filmologie, Walter Benjamin said, "... On the one hand, film furthers insight into the necessities governing our lives by its use of close-ups, by its accentuation of hidden details in familiar objects, and by its exploration of commonplace milieux through the ingenious guidance of the camera; on the other hand, it manages to assure us of a vast and unsuspected field of action ." And in the process of defining 'Cinematographic Illusion' in the book 『Creative Revolution』, Henri Bergson mentioned that "We take snapshots, as it were, o the passing reality, and, as these are characteristic of the reality, we have only to string them on a becoming abstract, uniform and invisible, situated at the back of the apparatus of knowledge...."Both quotes imply that visual media such as movies, soap operas, and TV advertisement is tofocus on making fragmentary images derived from the insight of a life projected through the camera lens working on the operator's perspective. ● In this perspective, a storyboard artist could be the one who shape the attitude of the film on a very raw perspective from the beginning. ● The fragmentary images and a chunk of flashback of such artist's personal life. It would be very raw accentuation of hidden details in her life, and the irritations occurring in her routine to respond. These tumbling mixtures is what this exhibition is about. ● "It is created by capturing the moment in a blink. It's a play speedily to frame my memories as if the clapper connected on the tip of rubber band coiled on my waist is uncoiled in a flash by retroaction of weigh. I capture the moment when those memories flashed my mind and instantly project on the canvas by drawing. These drawings are neither meticulous nor detailed but soundly my own story." Kangsook explains her drawings as such. She has been visualizing the stories of somebody else for 20 years but now it is soundly hers on canvas. In fact, prior to the path as a professional storyborad artist, Kangsook was an art student who studied ink painting at college and since then, she has never stopped pursuing the path to live as an artist who expresses her own artistic mind and enthusiasm. In that, 'drawing soundly my own story' in her comment adds more weight to this exhibition. ● Swimming moments and tumbling flashbacks. I hope everyone visiting this exhibition would experience to walk into her 'tumbling box' consisting of her mundane episodes created by her somewhat unique perspective to react the impetus in life. ■ Yun, Hankyoung
