밤의 숨(Breath of The Night)

오랜 타지생활을 정리하고 고향으로 돌아온 내가 전주의 구 시가지에 자리를 잡은 것은 우연이었다. 어릴 적 친구가 이곳에서 작업을 하고 있었던 것이다. 아무 연고도 없던 나는 친구와 같은 건물에 작업실을 얻었다.

밤의 골목을 걸어본 적이 있는가? 분명 낮과 사뭇 다른 풍경에 놀라는 자신을 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 시내의 밤 풍경은 알다시피 한산하다 못해 적막하다. 대부분 사람들의 생활권인 주택가와 아파트 단지가 모여 있는 동네와는 느낌도 풍경도 다르다. 한밤의 시내는 주택가의 따뜻한 공기도 사람의 온기도 느껴지지 않을 정도로 차갑고 어둡다. 또한 이곳은 낮과 밤이 놀랄 정도로 다르다. 전주가 새롭게 관광지로 각광받으면서 조용하기만 하던 이 구 시가지가 사람들의 발길로 북새통을 이루고 있기 때문이다. 그래서 한 낮의 내 집 앞은 나가기가 두려울 정도로 사람들이 북적거린다. 이렇게 두 얼굴을 가진 집 앞 풍경은 나에게 일상의 장소에 대해 돌아보게 하는 계기가 되었다. 매일 아침 눈을 뜨는 작업실, 항상 지나다니는 골목길, 자주 가는 카페 등을 자세히 들여다보니, 평범한 장소들임에도 불구하고 때때로 아주 낯설고 새롭게 느껴질 때가 있다. 그러자 이 '낯섦'에 흥미가 생겼다.

특히 오래된 도시의 낡은 공간들은 눈을 뗄 수 없을 정도의 묘함과 특이함으로 나의 관심을 이끌어 냈다. 높지 않은 건물들과 기워지듯 이어진 골목들에서 신도시에서는 볼 수 없는 카오스적인 풍경들이 오래도록 나의 눈길을 끌었다. 나는 이러한 도시의 모습을 내가 느끼는 감정과 함께 드로잉으로 표현하고자 하였다. ● 이번 작업을 통해 오래된 낡은 놀이공원과 같은 도시의 모습들에서 우리의 유년시절의 찬란함과 잊혀져 가는 공간들을 다시 추억하고 돌아볼 수 있기를 바라는 마음이다. ■ 박정경

Breath of The Night ● It was a coincidence that I settled in an old city of Jeonju when I returned to hometown after finishing some time in a remote area. My childhood friend was working there. I did not know anybody there and I found a workroom in the same building as my friend. ● Have you ever walk down the alley of night? You may find yourself surprised by the landscape quite different from that of a day. The landscape at night is quiet and even dreary. The way you feel and the landscape you see at night is different from the neighborhood where residential areas and apartment complex of most of people's living sphere are concentrated. Downtown at night is so cool and dark that it is hard to feel warm air of residential area and the warmth of people. Moreover, the difference between night and day is remarkably different. As Jeonju emerges as a new tourist destination, this old and quiet downtown is busy with lots of visitors. Therefore the front yard of my house in the daytime is very crowded to the extent that I do not want to go out. The landscape of my house which has two faces gave me a chance to think about daily space. I closely looked at the workroom where I open my eyes every morning, the alley where I always go by, and the café where I visit often. Even though they are very ordinary places they feel very strange and new. And I became interested in this 'unfamiliarity'. ● In particular, the old places of an old city attracted my attention with its weirdness and uniqueness of which I cannot take my eye off. In a series of alleys that seem to be weaved with not-that-tall buildings caught my attention. I decided to express this landscape of the city with my feelings through drawing. ● I hope that this work would serve as a chance to look back on resplendence of childhood and the spaces that become forgotten through the appearances of a city such as old theme parks. ■ Park Jung Kyung
