바림 레지던시 2017

3년간의 고시원 생활을 마치고, 새로운 바림에 와 여는 첫 전시는'바림 레지던시 2017 : 백종관, 서영기, 황수현, Julian Matta, Valeria Vargas'입니다. ● 이번 레지던시 및 전시는 '리서치 중심의 예술'을 큰 주제로 가지며, 광주내외 작가, 그리고 시각예술과 공연예술을 아우르는 작가들이 참여하여 만들어낸 과정입니다. ● 3년간의 고시원 생활은 바림에게는 좋은 아이디어를 주는 실험적인 공간이자, 광주를 기반으로 하는 현대예술공간이 되고자 하는 노력이 일어난 곳이며, 결과보다는 과정에 충실할 수 있는 실패를 포용하는 공간이었지만, 동시에 '레지던시'의 좋은 명분이기도 했습니다. 고시원이라는 한국식 삶에서 우리는 한국을 다양한 각도로 바라볼 수 있었고, 실제로 삶이 행해진 공간에서 예술가들이 '살며' 작업한다는 구조에 매력을 느낀 많은 작가들이 참여했습니다. ● 지역의 공간으로 커가는 동안, 이러한 장소 특정적인 부분도 바림의 성격을 빚어가는데 한 몫 하기도 했고, 좁은 공간이 주어진다는 전제 조건이 작품 위주로 생각해 오던 작가들에게 공간 위주로 생각할 수 있게 해준다는 신선한 자극이 되기도 했습니다. ● 그러한 특징적인 공간을 떠나, 현실적인 이유로 조금 심심하고 좁은 공간으로 이사를 한 바림에게'누군가가 살던 곳에서 살면서 작업을 한다'라는 레지던시 개념은 완벽하게 사라졌고, 그렇기 때문에 이번 17년도 레지던시를 새 공간에서 진행하면서'리서치 중심의 예술'을 큰 틀로 가지고 가게 되었습니다.

그동안 비예술적 공간 안으로 예술을 끌어들이는 레지던시를 운영했다면, 새로이 도전한 것은 자신의 작업의 파편을 가지고 와 배양하고, 키우며, 살을 붙여가는 것이 가능하지 않을까라는 고민을 전제로 하는 레지던시였습니다. ● 다른 모든 작업에서도 리서치는 어느 정도 요구되는 것이지만, 특히 본 레지던시를 리서치 중심이라고 부르는 것은 자신의 예술 작업의 지속성을 연구와 조사를 기반으로 하여 탐구해 나가는 시각예술, 공연예술 분야의 작가들이 참가했기 때문입니다. ● 책과 영화, 삶에서 오는 막연한 씬, 영감, 공부로 부터 작업을 하는 것이 아닌, 가정을 세우고 실험하며, 데이터를 수집하고 그를 분석하는, 또한 그 과정을 통해 결과물을 도출해 내는 레지던시를 기획했습니다. 물론 그 과정을 명확히 과학의 리서치 처럼 드러내기는 여러울 수 있습니다. 예술의 리서치의 결과는 어디까지나 예술이고, 리서치 레지던시라고 해서, 다닥다닥 종이와 사진을 붙이고 과정을 전부 보여줄 필요는 없기 때문입니다. ● 어디까지나 예술은 형태이자 표현이지만, 본 레지던시의 참여 예술가들은 리서치를 통해 자신의 작업의 일부를 변형하고 지우고 덧붙이는 과정을 겪었고, 다양한 연구 방법을 통해 얻어진 결과물이 전시를 구성하고 있습니다. ■ 바림

After three years of Goshiwon life, Barim opens its first exhibition since moved, 'Barim residency 2017 : Paik Jongkwan, Young Seo, Soohyun Hwang, Julian Matta, and Valeria Vargas.' ● Both of the residency and exhibition have a big theme of 'research-based art,' and is a process created by Gwangju/Out-side-of-Gwangju artists including visual art and performing art. ● For Barim, the three years of Goshiwon life was an experimental space for inspirational ideas, was where the attempt to be a contemporary art space based in Gwangju was realized, and was indeed an embracement of failure to focus on process rather than result, yet at the same time, it was a decent reason for 'a residency.' Goshiwon, a very Korean idea of living was able to make us view Korea in many different perspectives, and many of the artists who found interesting to 'live' and work at where people used to actually live have participated. As Barim becomes a local art space, this site-specific-ness played its role to create Barim's characteristic, and provided artists a stimulation to think about space-based practice beyond work-based practice. ● Leaving specificity, Barim moved to a rather mediocre and small space, and 'living and working where someone used to live' is gone, thus since 2017, we become ambitious to have 'research-based-art' for a new residency. ● Previously we have organized residencies which brought art into non-artistic space, and now newly challenge to organize a residency on the premise that this is where artists can bring particles of their works to cultivate, raise, and flesh out them. ● All other works require researches at some degree, but the reason why we call this residency as research-based is because we invite visual and performing artists who have found their sustainability of art works in exploring based on investigating and studying. ● Not to continue working from a vague scene, inspiration, or study from a book, film, or life, the residency aims to formulate hypothesis, experiment, collect data, and analyze, and to find results out of the process. Of course the process is not going to be too obvious like science. Because the result of research in art is eventually art, and research-residency does not have to show tons of papers and photographs to show the every process. ● In all respects, art is a form and expression, yet in this residency, participating artists went through a process of transforming, erasing, and adding a part of their works through research, and the exhibition is composed of the results from various research methods. ■ BARIM
