You are a Space

지극히 절제된 선으로 전시 공간을 가르는 공간드로잉은 고요하고 긴장된 떨림을 가져온다. 단순한 선으로 구성된 설치는 그 선으로 갈라져 생성된 공간을 동시에 보여준다. 수학적 계산에 의해 그어진 이성적인 선은 감성적이고 서정적인 느낌을 불러온다. 사진이지만 조각적인 입체 구조를 가진 검은 사각형 액자는 선이 만들어 낸 조각설치 옆에 나란히 걸린다. 서로 다른 언어로 한 공간을 점유하는 두 작가의 공간드로잉은 조용히 관객을 만난다. 관객은 작품에 조금씩 관여하며 대화를 시작한다. ● 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것에 대한 의문은 전시 공간 전체에 흐른다. 오종의 보일 듯 말 듯 한 선을 따라가다 보면 어느새 사각의 공간을 보게 된다. 주의 깊은 관객의 시선은 보이지 않는 또 다른 공간을 만나기도 한다.

최소한의 본질을 추구하는 미니멀리스트 아그네스 마틴 책의 더스트 쟈켓만을 찍은 정희승의 사진은 보이지 않는 책의 존재를 이야기하고 있다. 한동안 미술계에서 사라져 보이지 않는 곳에서 계속해서 작업하던 아그네스 마틴은 보이지 않는 책과도 같으리라. 그녀의 절제된 그리드 작업과 미세한 선의 떨림은 가장 순수한 정신세계를 보여준다. ● 백내장으로 뿌옇던 시야가 수술에 힘입어 새로운 세상을 보게 되는 경험을 써 내려간 존 버거의 책에서 영감을 얻어 만든 폭포사진은 정희승의 갈등을 말해주고 있다. 백내장(cataract)의 어원인 폭포가 눈앞에 드리워져 있어 보지 못하는 세상은 감은 눈으로 볼 수 없는 세상과도 같다. 눈을 감아도 보이는 그 무언가를 작가는 보고 싶어 할지도 모른다. 정희승의 작품 '25살'의 꿈을 꾸는 듯, 감은 눈은 과연 무엇을 보고 있을까.

미세한 선으로 균형 있게 들어 올려진 폭포사진은 보이지 않는 세계를 보고자 하는 두 작가의 바램을 보여준다. ● 전시 『You are a Space』는 작품과 관객이 주고받는 이야기를 귀 기울여 들어보는 만남과 대화의 공간을 만들어 본다. 본 전시와 함께 오종의 책 『주고 받는 모서리』가 동시에 발간된다. 책이라는 형식을 공간적으로 해석한 드로잉 작업으로 헤적프레스와 협업으로 진행 되었다. 여기에 또 다른 담론이 생성되기를 기대한다. ■ 조정란

Space drawing, dividing the exhibition space with utterly restrained lines, brings a quiet and tense vibration. An installation composed of simple lines presents spaces created by those very lines simultaneously. Rational lines, drawn according to mathematical calculation, evoke emotional and sentimental feelings. A black rectangular frame, which is a photograph, but has a sculpture-like three-dimensional structure, is hung right beside the installation sculpture made with lines. Two artists' spatial drawings, which occupy a single space with different languages, quietly encounter their spectators. The viewers become involved in the works bit by bit as they begin their dialogue. ● The question about the visible and invisible flow throughout the exhibition space. If we follow Jong Oh's hardly visible lines, we eventually come to see a rectangular space. The eyes of more attentive spectators may encounter another invisible space. ● Heeseung Chung's photograph of the dust jacket of minimalist Agnes Martin, who had pursued minimal essence in her work, talks about the existence of an invisible book. Agnes Martin, who had disappeared from the art world for a while as she continued to work in a place out of sight, is like an invisible book. Her carefully controlled grid works and lightly trembling lines demonstrate the purist mental world. ● A photograph of a waterfall, inspired by the experience of John Berger, who wrote about how he came to see a new world after receiving cataract surgery to improve his foggy sight, speaks of Heeseung Chung's inner conflict. A world that cannot be seen because a waterfall—the origin of the word cataract—is flowing before one's eyes is like a world that cannot be seen through closed eyes. Perhaps the artist wants to see the something that is seen when she closes her eyes. What is she looking at with her eyes closed, as if to be dreaming of Age 25, which is also the title of one of her works. ● The waterfall photograph, hanging in balance by very thin lines, reveals the hopes of the two artists, who want to see invisible worlds. The exhibition You are a Space attempts to create a space of encounter and conversation, in which we listen carefully to the conversations between the works and spectators. ● As the exhibition is held, Jong Oh's book Corner Dialogue will also be published at the same time. The drawing works, which provide spatial interpretations of the book form, were made in collaboration with Hezuk Press.
