뉘앙스 Nuance

회화 속에서 '뉘앙스'를 발견한다. 별 이유 없이 어떤 그림 앞에서 발걸음을 멈추고, 작가의 의도와는 상관없는 나름의 공감대를 형성하며, 빠른 템포로 흘러가는 시간의 점들 속에서 하나의 느리고 예민한 선으로 늘어져버린다. ● 뉘앙스는 정밀하게 짜인 악보가 아니라 그것을 연주하는 피아니스트의 진솔함과 예민함에서 비롯된다. 잘 다듬어진 이성적인 날카로움과 구분되는 감정의 섬세함은 작품들의 모태이고, 그것들은 물감과 붓 터치에 의해 하나의 뉘앙스로 탈바꿈한다. 작가들은 각자 자신만의 생각과 시각을 가지고 세상을 바라본다. 그리고 그것들은 캔버스 위에서 실현된다. 생각과 관념과 물감 혹은 다른 회화적 재료는 쉽사리 머릿속에서 캔버스 위로 번역될 수 없는 다소 상반되는 두 개의 다른 항이다. 그렇기 때문에 작가들은 직관에 의존한 채 공통분모가 존재하지 않는 두 항을 이어내려는 노력을 하게 된다.

이러한 과정 속에서 직관과 그림을 그려나가는 행위에 수반되는 예민함은 이미지와 상징성에만 의존하는 것이 아닌 색, 촉감, 터치들 속에 녹아 들어가며 작가는 지극히 주관적인 회화적 번역작업을 행하게 된다. 따라서 그들의 작품에선 고유한 뉘앙스가 탄생하게 되며, 우리는 바로 여기에 초점을 두고 전시를 기획하게 되었다. ● 대체로 작가들은 작품이 관람객들에게 단지 정확한 메시지를 전달하기를 바라지 않는다. 대신 그 자체로 어렴풋한 감정을 풍겨내길 바랄 뿐이다. 어렴풋한 감정의 향기로 관람객들은 미묘한 공감대를 느끼고, 음미하게 될 뿐이다. 이런 연유로 우리는 알 수 없는 끌림으로 특정 작품 앞에 서게 된다. 특정 작가의 특정한 소설만을 애정 하는 것이 아닌 그의 문체를 따라가며 작가의 다른 책들을 하나 둘씩 읽어 나가듯, 뉘앙스는 부분을 넘어서는 포괄적인 공감을 이끌어낸다. ■ 김하나

보이지 않는 순간들 ● '뉘앙스'를 우리말로 옮겨보면 '미묘한 느낌' 정도로 표현될 듯하다. 김하나 작가와 갤러리 기체 공동기획으로 마련된 이번 전시는 회화의 보이지 않는 순간들에 주목함으로써 '뉘앙스'와 연결 지은 몇 가지 질문들과 함께 시작됐다. 먼저는 하나의 작품이 완성될 때까지 화면의 안과 밖에서 영향을 미치는 상황들이 어떻게 촉발되고, 작용하는가 이다. 이는 특정의 소재나 대상을 선택하는 과정, 화면을 채워나가는 동안 발생하는 즉흥적이거나, 우연적인 순간일 수 있고, 때로 그것은 작업의 본질적 성격과 방향을 결정짓는 데까지 미친다. 다른 하나는 회화적 형식과 연관되는 작업의 물리적 진행 방식이나 체계 등이다. 눈에 띄는 것은 작가에 따라 형식의 유사성에도 불구하고 서로 다른 접근을 보이거나, 그 반대인 경우들이 적지 않다는 점이다. 또 '회화'에 대한 이런저런 궁금증을 풀어놓다 보면, 보다 가볍게는 작업할 때 캔버스를 바닥에 눕히는지, 아니면 벽에 세우는지부터 작품의 완성을 선언하는 순간들은 어떻게 직감하는가와 같은 사소해 보이는 물음들에까지 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 이어진다. ● 이번 전시는 '회화' 자체를 테마로 삼되, 가능한 여러 층위의 사람들이 흥미롭게 관람하고, 공유하고, 참여할 있는 자리가 될 수 있도록 수 차례 사전 논의를 거쳤다. 그런 노력의 일환으로 전시 기간 중 라운드 테이블 '회화, 보이지 않는 순간들'을 연다. 전시의 구성에서는 일단 작가 별로 요즘 작업의 상징적 시발점이 되는 작품들과 최근 작업을 대비해서 볼 수 있도록 했다. 이를 위해 작품들을 기계적으로 배치하지 않고, 가능한 서로 섞일 수 있도록 했다. ■ 갤러리 기체

'Nuance' gets discovered from the painting. Someone stops in front of a painting and develops a bond of sympathy that is eventually subjective from the intention of an artist as dragging out rapidly flowing time into a sensitive line. ● 'Nuance' begins from truthfulness and sensitivity of a pianist instead of precisely organized musical note. A delicacy of a sentiment distinctive from well-crafted rational acuteness is the ultimate matrix of every works and it gets transformed into a 'nuance' through paints and a series of brush touches. Artists translate the world though their own thoughts and perspectives, and actualize them on a canvas as nuances. These elements such as ideas and senses of artists, paints and other pictorial materials are two decently conflicting items; thus, artists continuously attempt to connect these elements sharing mere common denominator solely through their intuitions. ● Intuition and sensitiveness provoked by the act of painting within this process not only rely on image and symbolism but also melt into color, feeling and touch and allow an artist to proceed ultimately subjective pictorial translation. Therefore, work of each artist portrays intrinsic nuance and it is the rudimentary factor of the exhibition. ● Artists do not crave for work to provide accurate message towards the viewer, instead, aim for it to exude nebulous emotion as a work itself; the viewer experiences and examines the nuance in the scent of nebulous sentiment - it explains the reason why we halt in front of a specific work through an unknown attraction. As we follow a series of literary works of favorite writer instead of expressing affection towards a specific work, 'Nuance' derives out comprehensive sympathy exceeding the partial of it. ■ Hana Kim

Moments, Unseen ● The word 'nuance' can roughly be translated to 'shade of feeling'. This exhibition, coordinated by the artist Hana Kim and Gallery Kiche, began from a series of questions connected to 'nuance' as mainly focusing on the unseen moments from the painting. Primary question points out how the circumstances get triggered and affected both inside and outside of the canvas during the completion process of paintings. It could either be the process of deciding specific material or object or extempore and coincidental moment provoked while filling up scene, and sometimes it affects decision of the work's innate characteristic and direction. The other one is a method of physical process or system related to pictorial process. It is frequently noticed that each artist shows distinctive approach despite the similarity of a format and vice versa. Moreover, as a series of questions surrounding 'painting' get enumerated, minor questions such as whether an artist lays down a canvas or puts it on the wall while working or how he or she proclaims the finalization of a work, continually appear. ● In addition to focusing on 'painting' itself as the main theme of this exhibition, a series of discussions were made in order to allow broader range of audiences to actively engage and enjoy the event. As a result, round table named 'Painting; Unseen moments' will be held during the exhibition. Also, the exhibition is organized through placing the works, in which are symbolic starting origin of recent style, and works done recently in order to portray the comparison.
