컨셉 없는 컨셉

들어가는 글 ● 며칠 전 『콘셉트 없는 콘셉트』 전의 기획자인 김한울작가로부터 다음과 같은 카톡이 왔다. '교수님, 5월 10일, 시작하는 저희 그룹전에 혹시 전시서문을 써주실 수 있을까요? 교수님의 글이 들어가면 의미가 더 클 것 같아 여쭤봅니다" 무릇 선생이라면 사랑스런 제자의 간청을 어떻게 거절할 수 있겠는가? 더구나 이번 기획전은 나 자신을 포함한 참여 작가 모두에게 큰 의미를 지닌 기념비적인 전시가 아니던가. 총 15명의 참여 작가들은 이번 학기 나의 『전시기획세미나』 수업을 듣고 있는 국민대 미술대학원생들이다. 이들은 회화, 설치, 입체 등 장르가 다양하고 국적, 나이, 성별, 전시경력도 각각 다르지만 공통점이 있다. 바로 예술적 열정이 넘치고, 작가로 살아남는 방법을 적극적으로 모색하는 도전정신을 지녔다는 것. 지난 3월 개강 날 학생들에게 『전시기획세미나』를 수강하게 된 동기에 대해 물었다. 대체적으로 "생계를 유지하면서 창작활동을 지속적으로 할 수 있는 원동력이 무엇인지", "예술활동을 지속하기 위해 공공지원금을 받을 수 있는 방법은 없는지", "전시장 접촉과 작품 홍보방법, 큐레이터, 평론가, 갤러리리스트와 우호적인 관계를 맺는 방법이 무엇인지 등으로 의견이 모아졌다. 다시 말해 창작의 본질추구, 현실적인 삶과 창작활동 사이에서 균형 유지, 예술 작업을 하며 부닥치는 문제점 발견과 실행 가능한 해결방법을 모색하기 위해 수강신청을 하게 되었다는 것이다. 절박한 심정이 반영되었던가. 학생들은 단 한 사람도 지각 결석 없이 열심히 수업에 참여했다.

그러던 지난 4월, 수업 중 학생들이 내게 놀라운 소식을 전했다. 맏형 격으로 전시경력이 상대적으로 많은 양경렬작가의 도움에 힘입어 키스갤러리에서 기획전을 개최할 수 있는 소중한 기회를 얻었다는 것이다. 기쁜 소식을 전하는 학생들도, 듣는 나도 일제히 탄성을 질렀다. 그날 이후 작가들 사이에 신속하고 효율적인 역할분담이 이뤄졌다. 정윤영작가의 총괄 지휘 아래 곽주연, 김보경, 김한울, 류재형, 손태민, 심지예, 양경렬, 오지은, 이채연, 이혜전, 장해미, 정윤영, 주기범, 한미숙, 베네수엘라 출신의 크리스티나 누녜즈 등 총 15명의 작가들이 발로 뛰며 전시 기획과 홍보, 인쇄물, 디스플레이 안까지도 성공적으로 끝마쳤다. 고작 두 달 남짓한 짧은 기간에 작가들은 작은 기적을 이뤄냈다. 나는 『콘셉트 없는 콘셉트』전이 참여작가들에게 창작활동에 대한 불확실성, 회의, 두려움을 떨쳐버릴 수 있는 용기와 희망을 주었다고 생각한다. 작가들은 이번 기획전을 준비하면서 예술가에게 꼭 필요한 자질인 나도 해낼 수 있다는 자신감을 얻게 되었다. 젊은 작가들이여 셀프(Self) 전시를 축하해요. 자, 모두 함께 외쳐 봐요. we can do it! ■ 이명옥

Few days ago, I got a text from Han-wool Kim, the planner of the exhibition titled 『Conceptless concept』. 'Professor, could you write us an introduction for our group exhibition? It will be meaningful if you write one' No teacher will turn down such a request from students. Besides, isn't it a meaningful exhibition not only for the artists but me? 15 artists of the exhibition are all my students of the class 『Seminar on exhibition plan』. Though they do different genres such as painting, installation, three-dimensional structure, and nationality, age, sex, the experience is different for each, they have one thing in common. They all are passionate about art and have the challenging spirit of seeking ways to survive as an artist. On the day of the beginning of the semester in May, I asked students about their motives for taking 『Seminar on exhibition plan』. Mostly they said "What is the driving force that encourages artists to make a living and create art works constantly?", "How do I get artist support fund to keep working?", "What are the methods on how to access an exhibition space, promote own works and have good relationships with curators, critics, gallerists?" In other words, to find the solutions to pursue the essence of creation of art, maintain the balance between real life and creating works, detect the problems from everyday work, they got to take the class. Was the desperate desire reflected? Not one student was absent or late for the class. Then one day in April, students gave me a surprising news. With the help of Kyung-ryul Yang who has not a few exhibition experiences compared to others, students got a chance to have an exhibition in Kiss gallery. Hearing that news, we all gave a shout of joy. From that day on, students shared roles rapidly and effectively on the exhibition. Under the direction of Yoon-young Jung, 15 artists including Ju-yon Kwak, Bo-kyung Kim, Han-wool Kim, Jae-hyung ryu, Tae-min Son, Ji-yeah Sim, Kyung-ryul Yang, Ji-eun Oh, Chae-youn Lee, Hye-jeon Lee, Hae-mi Jang, Ki-beom Joo, Mi-sook Han, Christina Nunez from Venezuela have successfully managed the whole exhibition including promotion, printing and even display plan. They have achieved a little miracle only in 2 months. I believe 『Conceptless concept』 has given courage and hope to banish the uncertainty of art activities, doubts and fear. The artists have surely got the confidence to believe that we can do it, which is a necessary trait of an artist. Young artists, congratulations on the self-exhibition. Well, let us shout. We can do it! ■
