이건희의 한지미학은 미술개념과 떼려야 뗄 수 없을 정도로 맞닿아 있다. 작품을 제작하는 방식과 시각적 이미지를 표현하는 논리가 작품의 존재방식을 규정하는 기준이 되기 때문이다. 근원적으로 해명하면, 작품을 제작하는 기법(techne)에 전통적인 수공의 한지 뜨기가 첨가되었고, 감정과 생각을 시각적으로 번역하는 미(ars)개념이 여기서는 자연적이자 은유적인 이미지로 독해되었다. 미술(ars＋techne)의 본질에 가까게 다가가려는 홀로서기, 현대미술을 비판하고 분석을 전제한 한지미학이 아닌가 싶다. 이건희가 회화세계의 오랜 전통인 붓으로 칠하고 색으로 가시화하는 제작 방식을 부정했듯이, 그녀의 한지미학은 이미지를 제작하는 방식을 부정하고, 그리하여 작품의 존재방식을 정의하는 시각적 변증법에 뿌리를 둔다. 이건희는 은유적이자 추상적인 작품의 존재방식으로 제2의 현대미술(제2의 추상을 대변하는 용어)에 도전장을 내밀었고, 한국의 단색화의 역사적인 노정을 평가하는 기준도 물었다. ■ 김승호

Lee's aesthetics of Han Ji is inextricably in contact with art concepts. The way to produce artifacts and the logic to express visual images sets criteria to define the way of being of art works. Fundamentally, the techne additionally includes the making process(tteuki) of Han Ji, traditional manual work, and the concept of ars that visually translates emotion and ideas, are read as natural and metaphorical images here. Her standing alone with an attempt to come up to art (ars + techne) with Han Ji, is presumably based on criticism and analysis against modern art. As Lee denies a traditional way to produce art works through painting with brushes and visualizing with colors, her aesthetics of Han Ji denies the way to produce images, and is rooted at visual dialectic that defines the way of being instead. In this way, she issues a challenge to the 2nd Modern Art (a term to represent the 2nd Abstraction), and inquire into the criteria to evaluate the historical path of Korean monochromy. ■
