황필주의 영상 미디어 작품의 소재(素材)는 달콤한 맛이 연상되어 침샘을 자극하는 총천연색을 재현한 캔디이며 불규칙함이 반복에 반복과 중첩을 거쳐 작은 규칙의 세계가 생성된 기이한 현상의 작품이다. 캔디의 심리적 반응은 달콤함인데 그 자체로의 Positive 존재와 달콤함으로 덮어진 Negative 존재를 일깨워 주기도 하며, 또한 첨단 디지털 생산라인을 구축하여 대량생산을 통하여 이윤과 직결되는 아이덴티티 브랜드 가치를 추구하는 자본주의 사회의 소비문화 아이콘이기도 하다.

모호하고 불분명한 개념의 혼돈의 입자(粒子)들이 여럿이 함께 모여 있는 무리, 많은 사람의 집단 의미의 군상 (群像), 여럿 역할들이 한데 모여 떼를 이룬 무리나 집단(集團), 사람들의 조직화된 공공사회 (社會) 등을 한마디로 "떼 flock"로 정의하고 그 의미를 주제로 삼은 언어의 시각적 해석이 명쾌하다. 예측 불가능하거나 혹은 무질서하게 보이는 현상 이면에는 일말(一抹)의 미미하고 정연한 질서가 존재한다는 퍼지이론, 뉴로 이론에 이어 1920년 물리학자 로버트 메이의 제3 이론이라는 카오스(chaos theory) 혼돈이론(混沌理論) 이 조직학적 적용 가능성을 열어놓고 있는 학계의 분위기 속에서 황필주의 미디어영상은 우연이라기보다는 우리 시대가 겪는 동시대적인 사유의 주제를 설정한 것부터 호감이 가는 작업이다.

감각에 의해 느껴서 인지(Cognition) 할 수 있는 둘 이상의 사물 또는 느껴질 수는 없어도 그 존재를 사유(思惟) 할 수 있는 일체의 것들이 동시에 보일 때 심미적으로나 서로 불규칙적으로 자리하고 어울리지 않아 조화롭지 않다는 불협 화물(不協和物)에 의한 카오스 세계를 재현하고 있다. 허와 실의 경계를 분명하게 나눌 수 없는 개념, 그리고 인간의 언어에서 나타나는 모호한 판단도 다룰 수 있는 이론의 실체를 찾아가는 작가의 인위적인 행위는 작은 생성체들이 무작위에 의해 놓이고 자리하여 연출됨은 마치 무질서의 세계가 은하계의 질서의 세상 안으로 자리 잡아가는 자연의 섭리와도 같음이 있다.

그 무질서를 이루는 작은 알갱이 카오스적 떼들의 존재는 몇 만 년 겹 시간의 존재를 대변하고, 그 고요한 틈 사이를 수직으로 흐르는 물(생명력)은 생성된 비주얼 시간 장치로 "중력"을 암시하기도 한다. 뉴턴과 아인슈타인을 거친 천체의 운동이 태양 주변에서의 빛의 굴절, 중력에 의한 빛의 색 편이 현상 등으로 우주 전체와 같은 거시적인 물체들의 구조를 결정하듯 황필주의 꿈틀대는 사탕 (Wiggling Candies)은 최소 단위의 마지노 선(Maginot Line) 격인 비주얼(可視的) 적 중력 세계인 지상의 개념을 변주(變奏) 하고 있다. ● 이는 잭슨 폴록(Jackson Pollock 1912~1956)이 아날로그적 추상미술에 녹아버린 비정형적인 조형언어를 붓으로 그리는 회화의 제작 방식을 포기하고 '액션페인팅'이라는 낯설고 새로운 영역을 개척했듯이 황필주의 정형적인 캔디들은 디지털에 의해 꿈틀대는 액션을 취하며 그리거나 뿌리지도 않은 동적 시각미술 DNA를 구현한다. ■ 이명환

Wiggling Candies展에서는 사탕이라는 오브제를 통하여 화려한 욕망의 이면에 있는 허무를 표현한다. 화려한 욕망을 구체적으로 이미지화할 수 있는 다양한 방법들 가운데 구체적으로 이미지화할 수 있는 많은 선택지 사이에서 자극적인 시각을 통하여 미각을 표현할 수 있는 세상의 온갖 다채로운 음식 문화 중에서도 화려하고 단맛이 가득한 디저트에 해당하는 사탕류를 생각하게 되었고 이 작업 시리즈의 시작점으로 잡았다. ● 필요 이상으로 식탐의 정점을 찍고 있는 간식류는 인간이 굳이 먹지 않아도 살아갈 수 있는 것들이라고 생각하기도 하지만 사람이 생존에 있어서 필요하지 않는 것을 행할 때 그러한 행위로 인하여 우리는 더욱더 좋은 사람답게, 멋진 삶을 살고 있다고 생각하게 만들어 주기도 한다. 또 우리의 마음을 더욱더 풍요롭게 그리고 여유롭게 해주는 역할을 가지기도 한다. 꽤 많은 이들이 단것에 대해 원하고 또 원하는 시대에 간식 제조사들은 '맛'에만 집착하기보다는 겉모양의 포장과 간식의 디자인에 더욱더 신경을 쓰게 되면서 화려함의 극치가 무엇인지에 대해 본격적으로 보여주는 세상에서 우리는 살고 있다. ● 작업은 digital photography 와 lenticular photography 그리고 moving photography로 전시를 기획하였다. moving photography와 lenticular photography에서는 꾸물꾸물 움직이는 조그마한 사탕들이 한데 모여 큰 형태를 만들고 미묘한 움직임들이 끊임없이 반복된다. digital photography에서의 작업들은 꿈틀대는 다양한 모양의 사탕들이 여러 가지 모습으로 존재한다. ■ 황필주
