수원시미술전시관 기획전시실 Project Space II(이하 PS II)에서는 2017년 다양한 기획전을 준비 중에 있다. 전시관의 유휴공간을 활용하여 마련된 이 공간은 수원지역뿐 만아니라 타 지역의 작가들이 매회 실험적이고 다원적인 예술 작업을 선보일 수 있는 장소이다. ● 2017년 PS II의 첫 번째 전시로 미디어 작가인 안가영, 유지숙의 작업을 조명해 보는 『VIRTUAL SPACE』展이 열린다. 서울과 수원 지역에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 이 두 명의 여성 작가는 사진, 영상, 인터렉티브 등 다양한 미디어 작업을 선보인다. 안가영은 사이버미신을 바탕으로 게임을 직접 제작하여 사이버스페이스와 현실세계의 관계에 대해 탐구하고 있으며 유지숙은 '브록파의 향기' 시리즈를 통해 꽃의 문화를 이야기한다. ● 안가영의 대표작인 「버츄얼 세렌디피티 Virtual Serendipity」는 우연적 이미지 혹은 텍스트간의 충돌을 주제로 한 사이버 미신적 세계를 보여준다. '뜻밖에 발견한 행운'이라는 단어에 걸맞게 게임의 구조는 매우 랜덤하게 구성되며 캐릭터 또한 사용자의 정보와 조작에 따라 다양하게 전개된다. 관람객이 직접 게임을 플레이할 수 있는 인터렉티브 미디어 작품으로 전시장의 스크린과 그 앞에 설치된 3개의 버튼을 이용하여 게임을 플레이할 수 있다.

「브록파의 향기」 시리즈를 선보이는 유지숙 작가는 실크로드의 끝자락에 위치한 브록파 족의 꽃을 대하는 순수한 방식을 작품에 반영하였다. 브록파 족에게 꽃은 '사랑'을 의미하며 사랑이야말로 그들로 하여금 척박한 환경 속에서 살아갈 수 있게 해주는 힘이라고 믿는다. 작가는 브록파의 향기가 머나먼 이 땅까지 전해졌으면 하는 바람을 담아 가장 순수한 어린아이와 가장 원초적인 꽃의 아름다움이 만나는 장면을 영상과 사진 속에 담아냈다. ● 이처럼 안가영은 현실세계의 우연성이라는 공식을 반영한 사이버공간을 탄생시켰으며 유지숙은 실제 존재하는 라다크 지역의 문화를 화면 안에 회화적으로 구현시켰다. 이번 전시를 통해 오늘의 현실을 반영하여 자신의 고유한 세계(virtual space)로 구축한 두 작가의 작업을 심도 있게 들여다 볼 수 있기를 바란다. ■ 박수정

Suwon Art Center's Project Space II (hereafter, PS II) is preparing for the diverse special exhibitions for the year 2017. This space is the place where the artists, not merely those from Suwon, but elsewhere as well can showcase their experimental and pluralistic artworks every session. ● The 『VIRTUAL SPACE』 will be held as the first exhibition of the PS II in 2017, featuring the works of the media artists, An, Gayoung and You, Ziesook. These two female artists who are based in Seoul and Suwon will showcase works across a variety of media -photography, video and interactive art. An, Gayoung examines the relationship between cyberspace and real world by making game based on the cyber superstition, while You, Ziesook talks about the culture of flowers through the 'Fragrance of Brukpa' series. ● An, Gayoung's representative work, 「Virtual Serendipity」 showcases the cyber superstitious world with the theme of coincidental image and collision among the texts. The game structure is composed in a very random manner in line with the phrase, 'serendipity'. Characters are also built in diverse ways according to user information and maneuvering. This is an interactive media work that enables viewers to be actively engaged with the piece by playing the game via the screen at the exhibition hall and controller installed in front of it. ● Artist You, Ziesook who is presenting 「Fragrance of Brukpa」 series factored in the pure method which the Brukpa Tribe approach flower onto her work. To the Brukpa Tribe, living at the ends of the Silk Road, flower signifies 'love' and it is believed to enables them to live in the barren environment. The artist embraced the scene in which a child, who is most pure, and the most fundamental beauty of flower meet with the hope that the Fragrance of Brukpa will be transmitted from faraway land to us, using video and photography. ● Likewise, An, Gayoung created a cyber space that projects the coincidences of the real world into the digital realms while You, Ziesook realized the culture of the Ladakh region that exists in actuality in the screen, using pictorial style. This exhibition will hopefully enable the viewers to examine the works of the two artists who built their own world (virtual space) by factoring in the reality of today. ■ Sue jung Park
