우리의 생각과 감정은 언어를 통해서 얼마나 잘 전달될까? 대부분의 사람들은 말과 글이 의사소통을 가능하게 하는 최고의 수단이라 인정한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 한편으로 말로 형언할 수 없는 무언가가 언어의 이면에, 또는 언어 너머에 은밀히 숨어있다고 믿는다. ● 전시에서는 텍스트를 조형언어로 사용하는 현대 예술가 두 명의 작품을 소개한다. 한국에서 활동하는 예술가, 장준석은"꽃"의 의미와 연관된 문화적 개념을 탐험한다. 그의 작품에서 표음문자인 한글"꽃"의 형태는 거꾸로 놓이며 마치 꽃이 피는 듯 연출되지만, 단순하게 재현되는 것을 넘어서 인공적인 재료, 문명의 부산물인 문자, 꽃과 관련된 일화적인 요소들이 혼재되며 모순적으로 작용한다. 이를테면 꽃의 의미는 죽음, 애도, 욕망, 명상, 치유 등으로 확대되면서 아름다움'과 '생명'에 국한되어 꽃을 바라보는 우리의 시각을 의심하게 한다.

뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 디에고 레클러리(Diego Leclery)는 변칙적인 언어유희나 말과 물건의 재치 있는 병치를 통해 우리의 통념을 무력화시킨다. 가로수 아래 무심히 꽂힌 막대기에 적힌 유명인사들의 명언, 성스러운 성경에 줄을 치는 우리의 경박한 행동, 권위 있는 예술인에 대한 존중과 결례의 경계를 넘나드는 모호한 차용. 이러한 부조리는 우리의 태도나 대상에 대한 믿음을 해체할 뿐만 아니라 때로는 복합적으로 재구성한다.

두 예술가 모두는 우리의 머릿속에서 텍스트가 개념화되고 이미지화되는 과정에 개입하며 그 사이에 발생한 미세한 균열을 드러낸다. 제도 안에서 암묵적으로 약속되었던 텍스트의 의미가 벌어진 그 틈 사이로, 우리는 숨어 있거나, 비틀어지거나 확장된 또 다른 의미들을 발견하게 된다. 바로 이러한 접근은 문화적 상징이나 기호에 대한 예술가의 깊은 통찰의 반영이다. 여기서 우리는 사회적인 강박관념, 오마쥬, 잊히는 것들처럼 우리가 일상적으로 간과했던 대상들을 다시 일깨우며 새롭게 마주하게 된다. ■ 황성림

How much of our thoughts and feelings are communicated through language? Although the literal meanings of words and sentences help our communication, most people would admit that we actually understand or feel what's really hidden behind, between, or beyond the words. This exhibition shows the works of two contemporary artists who are conveying meaning by dealing with texts. ● The Korean artist, Junseok Jang, explores various cultural concepts related to the meaning of flowers through the Korean letter, '꽃', which means 'flower'. Despite the fact that '꽃' is a phonetic character, he turned '꽃' upside down to make it look like a blooming flower. He uses artificial materials and civilized texts in order to transcend the perception of flowers symbolizing life and beauty. Moreover these paradoxical methods, while asking us to question the stereotyped concepts of flowers, provide us with culturally expanded meanings such as death, mourning, desire, meditation, healing etc. ● Diego Leclery, who works in New York, often collapses our perceptions of words by simple, witty juxtaposition and a gimmicky play of words and objects: celebrity quotes with old broom sticks under a tree; a casual secular gesture with a sacred Bible; ambiguous appropriation hovering between respect and disrespect for a prestigious artist; and so on. These contradictions give the artwork the magical ability to not merely deconstruct our perceptions but also reconstruct them complexly. ● Both of them twist the significations of texts or intervene in the process of conceptualizing and imaging words in our minds, revealing the crack between the text and the concept, or between the text and the image, thereby transforming or expanding their meanings. This is only one of the manifold approaches that reflect their in-depth insights into the signs and symbols of society and culture. Thus, these pieces let us encounter the world afresh by reminding us what we overlook every day, like social obsessions, hommages, the vanished etc. ■ Sung Rim Hwang
