공간의 화음 Sounds of Layers

KAIST Research & Art는 2017년 첫 전시로 최은혜의 개인전 『Sounds of layers』를 개최한다. 작가 최은혜는 빛이라는 매개체를 통해 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 간의 유기적 움직임을 시각화하는 작업을 해왔다. 이를 통해 보이지는 않지만 실재하는, 존재들 간의'관계'또는'교감'을 이야기 한다. 이번 전시에서는 지난 작업들의 연장선상에서, 평면에서 만들어지는 환영과 실재하는 대상의 결합인'확장된 평면'을 통해 다층적 공간의 생성과 깊이를 한층 더 밀도 있게 보여준다. 이번 전시는 「Dialogue」 연작들을 중심으로 회화, 드로잉 등 20여 점의 작품으로 구성된다.

최은혜는 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 간에 생성되는 요소들에 주목해왔다. 여기에서 시간과 공간은 유기적 움직임을 만들어 내는 두 개의 축이자 동력으로 작용한다. 이러한 주제의 작업은 빛의 재현이라는 외형을 띠고 있는데 이차원 평면 위의 선, 면을 통해 그리고 최근에는 삼차원의 공간으로 작업 형태는 점차 확장되고 있다. 빛은 눈에 보이지 않지만 실재하는 요소이며, 보이는 표면 뒤에서 드러나 있지 않던 보이지 않는 것들을 표면 위로 끌어 올리는 중요한 매개체이다. 빛에 의해 우리는 숨겨져 있던 다양한 층의 공간 역시 지각하게 된다. 최은혜는 이러한 빛의 변화, 그것에 의해 보이지 않던 것들이 드러나는 순간 그리고 원리들을 정확하게 파악해내고 그것들을 형상화한다. 따라서 그의 작업은 마치 여러 음들이 화음을 이루어내듯 여러 층들의 유기적 움직임을 자신만의 조형 언어로 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 한편 그의 작업에서 색은 보이지 않는 것을 드러나게 하는 중요한 요소이며 이 색의 떠오름은 빛에 의해 가능해진다.

빛의 채집은 최은혜의 작업 과정에 있어 가장 우선적으로 일어난다. 빛을 사진에 담거나 드로잉화하고 때로는 텍스트화하여 다양한 형상과 의미를 모은다. 그리고 그것을 바탕으로 나온 이미지들을 중첩시키면서 그것 안에서의 유기적 움직임을 발견한다. 또한 그 속에서 찾게 된 새로운 공간 구조를 재구성하기도 한다. 기하학적 형태, 색의 번짐 효과를 통해 빛과 공간의 상호 스며듦을 표현함으로써 존재 사이에서 일어나는 실재적인 것과 환영적인 것, 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것, 물질적인 것과 비물질적인 것 간의 관계 또는 교감을 드러내는 것이다. 'Dialogue'연작에서는 캔버스 평면 위에 나무막대 또는 투명 아크릴 막대를 부착하여 환영과 실재의 경계를 보다 더 흐트러뜨리면서 추상적 공간의 생성을 활성화시킨다.

이와 같은 최은혜의 작업이 궁극적으로 향하고자 하는 지점은 보이지는 않지만 실재하는, 존재들 간에 생성되는 무수한 관계 그리고 교감이다. 점, 선과 면을 통해 형태를 구현하고 색으로 드러냄으로써 '관계'를 구조화한다. 이번 전시를 통해 관람자들은 보이지는 않지만 실재하는 것들이 함축하고 있는 다양한 의미들을 성찰할 수 있을 것이다. ■ 정소라

KAIST Research & Art holds Eunhyea Choi's solo exhibition 『Sounds of layers』 in 2017 for the first time. Artist Eunhyea Choi has been working on visualizing the organic movement between visible and invisible through the medium of light. Through this, 'relationship' or 'sympathy' between beings that are invisible but exist are described. In this exhibition, on the extension of past works, the creation and depth of multi-layered space are shown more densely through the 'extended plane', which is the combination of the illusion made on the plane and the real object. This exhibition is composed of more than 20 works - paintings, drawings, etc, focusing on 「Dialogue」 series. ● Eunhyea Choi has been focusing on factors that are created between visible and invisible. Here, time and space act as two axes and motive forces that produce organic motion. This type of work has the appearance of the reproduction of light and is gradually expanding through the lines and faces on the two-dimensional plane and recently the three-dimensional space. Light is an invisible but real element, an important medium that lifts to the surface invisible things that are not visible behind the visible surface. By light, we also perceive the various layers of hidden space. Eunhyea Choi accurately identifies and shapes the moments and principles that reveal things that were not seen by the changes of light. Therefore, her work can be said to show the organic movement of the layers as her own formative language as if several notes are chords. In her work, color is an important element to reveal invisible things, and emergence of color is made possible by light. ● The collection of light is the first priority in Choi's work process. She embeds light into photographs, draws, and sometimes texts to collect various forms and meanings, and then, she overlaps images based on it and discovers organic movement in it. She also reconstructs the new spatial structure found within. It expresses the geometric form, the real and the illusory things generated through existences by expressing the mutual exudation of light and space through the blurring effect of color, the visible and the invisible, and the relationship or the sympathy between material and non-material. In 'Dialogue' series, a wooden bar or a transparent acrylic rod is attached on the canvas plane to further disturb the boundary between illusion and reality, thereby activating the creation of abstract space. ● The ultimate goal of Eunhyea Choi' work is myriad relationships and sympathies that are created between beings that are invisible but exist. 'Relationship' is structured by embodying shapes through points, lines, and faces, revealing them with colors.' Through this exhibition, the audiences will be able to reflect on the various meanings implied by what is not visible but actual. ■ 정소라
