"내 작품은 한마디로 조형의 영혼성에 대한 관심이라 할 수 있으며, 그 미지와 불확실성의 행로를 담보하는 침묵의 공간이고 원초로 흘러드는 모태의 공간이기도 하다." (김인겸 작가노트 중, 묵시공간 – 공, 1999) 수원시립아이파크미술관은 국내외 미술계에서 활발히 활동해 온 원로 조각가 김인겸의 작품세계를 조망하는『김인겸, 공간과 사유』전을 마련했다. 이번 전시는 '조각을 떠난 조각', '정신적 영역으로 열어가는 조각'으로 평가되는 김인겸 작가의 예술적 성취를 심도 있게 되짚어 보는 자리로 그의 작품전개에 있어 정점을 이룬 대표작과 최신작을 총망라하여 집약적으로 선보일 예정이다.

김인겸(b.1945-) 작가는 수원 출생으로 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 조소를 전공, 동대학원을 졸업했다. 1970년대 「생성」 연작을 시작으로 최근작 「Space-Less」에 이르기까지 조형의 본질을 향한 끊임없는 집념과 예술적 고뇌는 그를 한국현대조각을 대표하는 조각가로 자리매김 시켰다. 특히 초기작부터 이어진 한국적 조형의식과 현대미술의 결합에 대한 관심은 김인겸만의 독자적인 조형어휘를 확장해가는 개념이이 되었다.

특히, 이번 전시에서 주목할 것은 조각을 설치미술의 영역으로 확장한 최초의 작품으로 볼 수 있는 「프로젝트 사고의 벽」(1992)의 부분을 재연하고 베니스비엔날레 한국관 개관 당시 대표작가로 출품한 「프로젝트 21 – 네추럴 네트」(1995)를 관련 자료와 함께 공개한다는 점이다. 두 작품은 관람객의 적극적인 참여를 이끌고 실제 공간과 예술적 영역을 연결한다는 점에서 비상한 주목을 받은 대표작이다.

이후 김인겸은 1996년 한국작가로는 처음으로 프랑스 파리 퐁피두센터의 초청을 받고 도불하였고 2004년 귀국 전까지 국내외를 오가며 국제무대에서 활약했다. 다양한 조형실험을 시도했던 이 시기는 간결하고 함축적인 김인겸 특유의 조형적 질서가 극대화되고, 가장 물질적인 장르인 조각을 가장 정신적인 상태로 끌어올리는 계기가 됐다. ● 김인겸의 40여년에 걸친 작품세계를 집중 조망하는 이번 전시는 한국현대미술에서 특정계파와 장르에 속하지 않고 독자적인 조형어법을 구축해온 치열한 작가정신과 부단한 노력의 자취를 따라가는 여정이 될 것이다. 조각의 고착된 틀과 형식을 벗어나 열려진 공간과 사유의 세계를 마주하는 예술적 체험이 되길 바란다. ■ 수원시립아이파크미술관

"The core of my work lies in my interest in the spirituality of form; they are the space of silence that warrants the path of mystery and uncertainty, and the birth seat that flows into the primal." (From Kim In Kyum's Notes, Revelatory Space – Emptiness, 1999) ● Suwon I-Park Museum presents『 Kim In Kyum, Space and Speculation』; an exhibition that illuminates the artistic vision of Kim In Kyum, who has been active in both the domestic and overseas art scenes for many decades. This exhibition will allow for in-depth explorations of Kim's artistic achievements, whose works have been recognized as 'sculptures that break the boundaries of their form' and also 'sculptures that channel the spiritual realm,' and comprehensively introduce his representative pieces as well as his newest productions. ● Kim In Kyum (b. 1945-), born in Suwon, studied sculpture in Hongik University's undergraduate art program and completed graduate studies in the same college. Since his debut with the 「Generation」 series in the 1970s, leading up to his newest piece 「Space-Less」, he positioned himself as a leading figure in contemporary Korean sculpture through his tenacious pursuit of the fundamentals of form and artistic contemplation. In particular, his interest in fusing a uniquely Korean sense of form with contemporary art, an abiding theme that flows through his work, became the base for building his own formal vocabulary. ● The most notable aspect of this exhibition is the partial reconstruction of Project: Wall of Thought (1992), which is considered as the first work that expands sculpture to the realm of installation, and the introduction of 「Project 21 – Natural Net」 (1995), a piece he submitted as the Korean representative for the Korean pavilion at the Venice Biennale. These two works, most prominently indicative of his style, have attracted critical attention by inducing active viewer participation while connecting the artistic domain to actual space. ● Sine then, Kim became the first Korean artist to be invited over to France by the Pompidou Center in 1996, and continued to showcase his work in the global art scene until his return in 2004. During this period, when he experimented with various forms, his unique sense of concise and implicative formal order became further enriched, serving as the grounds for elevating the sculpture – a most materialist genre – to the level of spiritual sublimation. ● This exhibition, which sheds light on Kim's artistic oeuvre spanning over four decades, will be a journey that follows traces of his ceaseless efforts and aesthetic inquiries that undergird his unique formal vocabulary, in defiance of schools, sects, and genres in contemporary Korean art. We hope that this exhibition will be an artistic experience that allows the viewers to encounter a world of open space and thought, going beyond the fixed framework and forms of sculpture. ■ SUWON IPARK MUSEUM of ART
