프렛첼 링크 : 서로 다른 요소들을 연결하는 수학적 개념 ● 베를린 소재 퀸스틀러하우스 베타니엔 레지던시 프로그램에 참가했던 한석현, 송성진 작가가 주독한국문화원 갤러리 '담담'에서 첫 듀오 전시를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 두 작가가 독일 수도인 베를린에서 활동하며 작업한 결과물을 마지막으로 발표하는 전시이다. 서로 살아온 환경이 다른 이 두 작가의 작품을 한 전시장에서 마주한다면 두 작가의 작품들이 상당히 다르게 보일 수 있다. 마치 불협화음처럼 느껴질 수도 있을 것이다. 그렇다면 왜 두 작가의 작품을 같이 전시하는 것이며, 프렛첼 링크라는 전시제목은 무엇을 뜻하는 것일까? ● 한석현 작가의 작품은 '인공적인 자연'에 중점을 두고 있다. 그는 작품에서 자연적인 생명을 하이브리드로 만드는 접합 과정(연리지)을 통해 자연과 인공적인 요소 사이에 걸쳐 있는 존재, 즉 인공적 자연을 보여준다. 반면 송성진 작가는 도시화 과정 속에서 잊혀졌던 면들을 중점에 두고 작업한다. 이번 전시에서는 각기 다른 시간대에, 각기 다른 장소를 찍은 사진들을 하나의 이어진 풍경으로 나타낸 작품을 보여준다. ● 이 전시에서 프렛첼 링크는 두 작가의 작품 속에 비슷하지만 확연히 다른 공간, 자연과 인공을 연결하는 역할을 한다. 즉, 뫼비우스의 띠처럼 두 작가의 작품은 같은 차원 내에 존재하는 것이다. 프리드리히 니체는 보이지 않는 가느다란 선이 제일 강한 결속이라고 말했다. 이 전시에서 관람객들은 두 작가의 작품 사이에 보이지 않는 끈을 발견할 것이며, 또한 그것을 통해 그들 자신을 둘러싼 세계와 인공세계의 보이지 않는 연결고리를 발견할 것이다.

Pretzel Link is known in mathematics for connecting different elements. Han Seok Hyun and Song Sungjin, both Korean artists, now complete their one-year residency in Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and present their artworks at their first duo show at gallery damdam of the Korean Culture Center. This exhibition, which will be their farewell to their life in the German capital. At first sight, their artworks are seemingly different, as the two artists have different geographical, social and cultural backgrounds; hence their works will be exhibited in different spaces in the gallery. The distinct character of both artist's work might also create a dissonance: why present their works together? What is a Pretzel Link? ● Han Seok Hyun's focus is artificial nature, and therefore he uses the process of inosculation to merge natural life into a hybrid – lingering between the natural and the man-made, in other words naturartificial. Song Sungjin, on the other hand, explores the forgotten and hidden sides of the urbanization and for this show he will present merged landscapes between different places photographed in different points in time. The Pretzel link here acts like a Möbius strip that merges and brings together similar but yet distinct topologies of the natural and the man-made; the works of these artists belong together. Friedrich Nietsche said that invisible threads are the strongest ties. At this show, visitors will discover a thread between the works of these artists and thereby the invisible link to their own surroundings and naturartificial world. ● Han Seok Hyun, through his art pursues fusion between creative construction and ecological practice. His exploration between social science, art, and ecological engineering results in artworks that reflect critically on nature and the environment. His interest lies in expanding the concept of "artificial nature" as it manifests itself in such forms as urban gardens and backyards and developing fully-fledged art-making projects. ● Song Sungjin is interested in habitat and life styles of Urban citizens expressed in art through broad methods including photography, installation and film. He captures changes of old towns after their development and the daily life of urban citizen. He questions the problems of structures in city life and suggests solutions through his art works with the form of interactive art. ■ Jeong, Ka Hee
