코리안 방주 Koran Ark

1. 코리안 방주(Korean Ark)는 한국전쟁이후 분단된 상황에서 진행되어오고 있는 남한의 정치적, 사회적, 인식적 변화의 한계에 대한 불안감이 반영된 전시이다. Korea는 해방이후 이념 노선이 첨예하게 다른 두 국가 체제(북한은 사회주의, 남한은 자유민주주의)를 각각 구축해왔다. 특히 남한은 한국전쟁후 폐허가 된 국가시스템을 재건하고자 때때로 이념적으로 대립하고 있는 북한과 경쟁하며, 군사력 증강과 경제 성장에 집중해 오곤하였으나, 불안한 국내외 정치적 상황에서 산업화, 정보화, 세계화를 이끌어내었다.

2. 이러한 성장과 다르게, 남한사회는 사회를 건강하게 지탱해나갈 수 있는 생명에 대한 존중과 상대에 대한 배려가 유난히 미약한 상태이다. 전통적으로 한국사회는 충효사상에 입각한 유교문화가 사회저변에 자리잡고 있었던 것은 사실이나, 20세기 초 열강의 침략과 함께 찾아온 식민지시대의 문화말살정책과 한국전쟁이후 전통문화에 대한 이해부족과 경제정책에 대한 과도한 관심이 인본(人本{)을 중심으로 구축돼야할 사회를 만들지 못한 한계를 지니고 있다.

3. 희망 가능한 영역이 상실된 국가에서 예술가로서 취해야할 태도는 외연적 성장å과ú 전시적 효과를 위한 것이 아닌, 인간의 내적변화를 만들어 내기 위한 작은 움직임, 바램 등으로 이를 준비해나가야 할 것이다. 이 전시를 기획한 기획자와 참여작가는 한국분단이후 폐허된 땅에 희생으로 경제성장을 이끈 아버지 세대 이후, 남한의 정치, 경제, 사회 시스템에서 자연스럽게 문화를 체득하며 성장한 세대이다. 이들은 한국사회의 깊은 무의식에 자리하고 있는 봉건적 위계질서와 강압적 희생을 요구하는 권위주의적 통념을 부정한다.

4. 코리안 방주(Korean Ark)는 현재를 극복해나가기 위한 방법을 모색하기 위하여, 양보와 희생을 강요당했던 이들을 애도하고, 사회를 지속적으로 유지하고 지탱하고 있는 노동의 생명에 존경을 표하며, 역사 이전부터 존재해왔던, 산,들,강 등에 깃든 자연의 혼령에 염원을 담아 지속적으로 나아갈 것이다. 비록 불안하게 나아갈지라도. ■

1. Korean Ark is an exhibition reflecting the restlessness towards limits in political, social and cognitive changes in South Korea which has been lasted ever since the division of the North and the South after the Korean War. After the Liberation from the Japanese Colonialism, 2 totally different state systems (a socialist regime in the North and a liberal democratic one in the South)were established separately in the Korean peninsula. Particularly, South Korea has focused on economic development and strengthening of military forces in competition with the North, to reconstruct the state system which was wrecked after the Korean War, however it has achieved industrialisation, informatisation and globalisation under the unstable domestic and international political circumstances. ● 2. Unlike the rapid economic growth, the South Korean society especially lacks respect for life and consideration for others, both of which are essential for healthy sustainability of the society. It is true that the traditional Korean society is based on the ideology of Confucian loyalty and piety. Bu due to invasion of the Great Powers in early 20th century and the following policy of Japanese Colonialism to destroy the traditional culture, as well as lack of understanding of traditional culture and over-concentration on economic development after the Korean War, South Korea failed to reconstruct the society based on humanism. ● 3. In the state where there is no room for the people to be hopeful, the attitude required to artists is not pursuit of external growth and demonstration effect, but preparing and initiating little movements and hopes to induce internalchanges of human beings. The organiser and the participating artists of this exhibition are the generation which has naturally obtained the political, economic and social system of the South Korea generated by the economic growth led by their parents' generation. They defy the authoritarianism imposing feudal hierarchy or forced sacrifice, deeply rooted in the unconsciousness of the Koreans. ● 4. To seek the ways to overcome the present, Korean Arkshall sail on forwards while showing its condolences to those who have imposed concession and sacrifice, expressing its respect to the life and labour which have been and still is sustaining the society, and pray to the natural spirits indewelling in mountains, lands and rivers. Even if our sailing shall be a bit insecure... ■
