돌아오지 않는 강 River of No Return 不归江

과경(跨境)의 몸들, 접경(接境)의 말(言)들, 망경(忘境)의 소리 ● 저기 두 사람이 있다. 일평생 자신이 꿈꾸는 세계의 말(言)들을 좇았으나 단 한 번도 그곳에 닿지 못했던 사람. 자신의 의지와 상관없이 다른 세계의 말(言)이 사는 세계에 몸이 묶였던 또 한 사람. 한 사람은 몸을 넘어, 또 한 사람은 말들을 건너 그곳으로 사라졌다. 나는 오랜 시간 동안, 그들을 데려간 세계의 말(言)들이 궁금했었다. (작가보고 중)

2016년 새롭게 시작한 『코리안 디아스포라』 프로젝트의 결과물 중 하나이다. 코리안 디아스포라에 관한 리서치를 하던 도중, 여느 이산민들과 달리, 여전히 "우리"와 같은 "말"과 "글"을 사용하고 있는 조선족에 대해 관심을 갖게 되었다. 19세기 말부터 시작된 조선족 이주의 역사는 20세기를 거치면서 조선인에서 황국신민으로, 중국 건국 이후 56개의 소수민족 중 하나로 중국 길림성 연변 조선족 자치구에 터를 잡고 살아가며 이어지고 있다. 이들은 역사와 정치적 변화의 굴레 속에서 국가와 민족의 정체성을 스스로 "입고", "벗기"를 반복할 수 밖에 없는, 디아스포라의 면모를 그대로 보여주고 있다. 이 프로젝트를 진행하면서 끊임없이 떠올랐다 부서진 질문은 다음과 같다. "왜 우리는 하나가 될 수 없는 것인가?", "나는 누구와 어떻게 살아갈 것인가?". 첫 번째 결과물로써 이 작업은, 하나의 세계 속에서 서로 다르게 생각하며 살아가고 있는 나와 그들의 이야기를 "몸", "말", "소리"라는 키워드를 중심으로 이야기를 엮었다. 이해와 오해 사이에서 섣불리 마침표를 찍지 않는 엇갈림의 대화들을 들려주고자 한다. ■ 안유리

Bodies beyond the border, Words on the border, Sound of a vanished land ● There are two people. One, who spent his entire life chasing after the words of the world he dreamt of, and never got there. The other, who happened to be bound to the world of foreign words. One, crossing over his own body. The other, crossing the words, disappeared into that place. For a long time, I have been curious about the words of the world that took them away. (extract from the artist statement) ● This exhibition presents the first work of my new project 『The Korean Diaspora』 which began in 2016. While researching the topic, I became interested in the "Korean Chinese", who still use the same spoken and written language as "us", unlike other diasporic peoples. The history of their migration dates back to the 19th century. Since then, their identity has been shaped and reshaped, from the 'Joseon people' to the 'Japanese Loyal Subject' at the turn of the 20th century, to one of the 56 ethnic minority groups in the People's Republic of China today, permanently settled in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. Their story is one of constant transition, repeatedly "putting on" and "taking off" ethnic and national identities amidst rapid historical and political transformation. It is indeed a distinctly 'diasporic' story. The questions that haunted me throughout this project were these: "Why can we not become one?", "With whom can I live, and how?". In this introductory work, I follow three keywords, "Bodies", "Words" and "Sounds" as I weave our stories together; stories of people that live in the same world, yet think in different ways. I attempt to share the dialogues that intertwine, travelling between understanding and misunderstanding, not prematurely ending. ■ Yuri An
