시간은 언제나 부족하다. 그러나 이는 우리가 할 일이 있을 때에만 해당한다. 고향에서 벗어나 다른 문화권에 발을 딛는 경험이라는 점에서 레지던시는 시간여행과 같다. 때때로 일상생활의 아주 기본적인 상식까지 완전히 처음부터 다시 배워야 하는 것도 많기 때문에, 어린 시절과 청년기, 그리고 미래에 대한 기억이 소환되는 현장이다.

시공간은 열려 있다. 알버트 아인슈타인이 말했듯 "시간은 환상" 이니까.

부산에 도착한 후 한 달 동안 주로 레지던시를 하는 홍티아트센터 주변에서 지냈다. 이 지역은 제조업을 하는 공장이 주로 밀집한 산업 지대이다. 오래된 것의 흔적은 많지 않다. 이렇게 외국의 낯선 공간에 있을 때에는 가장 기본적인 요소들이 감수성을 자극한다. 공기, 빛, 그림자, 바다, 여러 가지 소음, 낙엽, 그리고 넓어진 시간의 감각, 홍콩에서의 생활과 비교해 생각해 보게 된다. 여기에서 살아가는 느낌을 표현하고 싶다.

이 곳의 훌륭한 자원은 무엇보다도 햇빛이다. 작업실에서는 아침 8시부터 오후 3시 30분까지 벽과 문에 햇살이 그리는 '그림'을 넉넉히 볼 수 있다. 이름 모를 각종 나무와 식물이 창가에 줄지어 햇살을 받는다. 이런 풍경은 홍콩에서는 적어도 내가 살았던 동네에서는 거의 볼 수 없다. 좀 이상하게 들릴지는 모르겠지만, 홍콩에서 아티스트 레지던시는 주로 초고층 빌딩의 바닥과 멀리 떨어진 공간에서 이루어지기 때문이다. 창 너머 햇살이 그리는 그림이나 나무의 그림자.

Time is always not enough, but it is only true when we have things to do. ● Artist residency is an experience of time travel. Once you step into another culture, far away from your own. Suddenly you realize that you have to learn from the very beginning, from the basic understanding of daily life. It recalls memories of childhood, of youth and of future. ● Nothing is necessary to be done. Just stay in the studio, which is very spacious compared to that I had in Hong Kong, allows a lot of solitary thought to ll up until your back feel painful with the chair. The spacetime is open. 'Time is an illusion.' - Albert Einstein. ● After arriving Busan for a month, mostly I stay in the area nearby Hongti Art Center. It is an industrial area where things are made. There is not much trace. In a foreign place, most fundamental elements become sentiments. The air, the light and shadows, the sea, the ambient sound, the fallen leaves and the sense of time seems dilated. ● To start from a personal perspective, I couldn't help but reect on my life in Hong Kong. I hope to describe the feeling of living here from Hong Kong. ● One touristic attraction in my studio is denitely the sunlight. Here I could see the same 'light drawing' on the wall and the oor from 8am to 3:30pm in my studio. Outside there are dierent trees and plants lling up the window scene. It is somehow rare in Hong Kong, at least in my neighbourhood. It might sound awkward to you, but the residential life in Hong Kong are mostly in a high-rise, far of the ground. Still, the windows are blocked by the other buildings so you hardly see 'light drawing' on the walls and shadows of trees in your at. ● The sense of timelessness may not be a thing of Busan, but certainly for me in Hong-ti. ■ Silas Fong
