서울의 주柱 The Pillar of Seoul

서울의 주(柱: 기둥 주)는 작게는 우리가 살고 있는 집을 떠받치는 기둥, 크게는 대도시 서울의 수많은 빌딩을 의미한다. 눈에는 보이지만 투명해서 모호한 형태의 '주' 안에는 너무나 선명하게 보이는 형광색의 실이 복잡하게 엉켜있다. 이번 전시는 우리가 사는 서울, 거대한 규모의 빌딩 숲 안에서 바쁜 일상의 삶에 가려져 눈에 잘 보이지는 않지만 서로가 얽혀있는 우리의 관계에 대해 이야기하고 있다. 실타래에서 풀려나온 한 올의 실은 탄탄하고 질서 있게 매어있던 것과는 다르게 무한한 자유를 만끽하며 술술 풀려나온다. 반대로 부드럽고 가냘픈 한 가닥의 실이지만 여러 차례 반복적으로 묶게 되면 단단해지고 쉽게 끊어지지 않는다. 이번 전시는 실을 풀어내며 우리의 삶 속에 쌓였던 오해, 다툼, 분열, 갈등은 생각보다 쉽게 해소될 수 있고, 실을 잇고 엮으면서 단절되었던 우리의 관계가 연결되고 돈독해질 수 있음을 말하고 있다. 이번 서울시청 전시에서는 현대 도시인들에게 서로 마주 앉아 이야기해보자고 제안하는 의자 설치작품 '소통의 의자'와 함께 희망을 상징하는 '꽃씨' 작품을 선보이며 그 어느 때 보다 다사다난했던 2016년을 마감하면서 '관계의 회복'에 대한 메시지를 전달하고자 한다. ■ 서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리

The Pillar of Seoul means a firm upright support for a house we live in a smaller way and largely represents numerous buildings in Seoul. The Pillar is visible, but transparent and imprecise. Vivid fluorescent colors of threads are tangled inside the Pillar. This exhibition is about diverse relationships intertwined with others we have in this busy daily life of Seoul. A strand of thread right off the skein is easily unraveled. On the contrary, it became hard to be snapped when it is bound tight. In this exhibition, you are invited to resolve misunderstandings, disputes, conflicts and disunities you might have in your life while unraveling threads, and also to rebuild disconnected relations while tying pieces of thread together. We showcase the "Chair of Communication," an installation art that suggests city people to sit across from one another on for heart-felt conversations, and the "Flower Seeds" that stands for new hope. Through this exhibition, Seoul City delivers a message of the "restoration of relations" at a moment when we close the year of 2016. ■ SKY PLAZA GALLERY
