서울의 근대화와 고속 성장의 단면으로서 자리하고 있는 중구의 세운상가 일대는 오늘날에도 다양한 소상공 업체들이 상생하며 활발한 하루하루를 보내고 있다. 1960년대 말 지어진 세운상가는 총 8개의 주상복합건물로 종로 세운상가에서부터 을지로 청계-대림상가를 거쳐 삼풍상가, 인현상가, 퇴계로의 진양상가로 이어진다. 설계 당시의 계획에는 모든 건물이 공중정원으로 이어 지고 자체 초등학교까지 갖춘 도시 속의 작은 도시를 꿈꾸었지만 실제로는 상가와 주거 공간 외에 문화시설이 없는 다소 건조한 건물로 만들어졌다. 그리고 현재는 주로1층은  영상,음향, 조명 상가, 2~4층은 수리점과 창고,5층부터는 사무실과 아파트로 사용되고 있다. 50년에 가까운 시간이 흐르는 동안, 이곳에서 살고 장사를 하고 물건을 사러 오는 사람들의 세대가 달려졌기 때문인지 아니면 예전과는 다르게 팍팍해진 이곳의삶의 무게 때문인지 이제는 매일 건물 안을 지나 다녀도 누가 누구인지 어디에서 왔는지 잠깐의 호기심만 가질 뿐 각자의 일을 하기에 바쁘다.

『컬렉터의 비밀 창고 A Collector's Secret Storages』 전시는 비밀스럽고 은밀한 현대 미술 컬렉터라는 가상의 인물을 설정하고, 그가 작품을 수집하고 연구하는 장소가 세운상가 안의 작은 상점과 창고, 사무실이라는 설정을 배경으로 한다. 이러한 배경은 실제로 몇몇 원로 작가들의 비밀 작업실이 을지로 일대에 있다는 사실을 모티브로 하였고, 을지로에서 스치는 많은 사람 중에 한 번쯤은 마주쳤을지도 모른다는 상상에서 출발하였다.

신분이 밝혀지기를 꺼려하는 컬렉터는 자신만의 즐거운 취미생활에 적합한 곳으로 세운상가를 택한다. 오래된 상점주인, 숙련된 기술을 배우고 있는 젊은 훈련생, 옛 추억에 젖어 매일 이곳에 친구들을 만나러 오는 노인, 전화를 받으며 뛰어다니기 바쁜 배달기사, 음식이 가득한 쟁반을 머리에 이고 건물 곳곳을 누비는 식당 아주머니, 철학과 종교를 연구하는 도사, 신기한 재료를 찾아 이리저리 헤매고 다니는 미대생 등 하루 종일 많은 사람이 오고 가지만 어떤 행색을 하고 있어도 그 누구도 자신을 신경 쓰지 않는 이곳이 그 만의 특별한 취미활동에 전념할 수 있는 완벽한 장소다. 그렇게 서울 한복판의 낡고 퇴색한 건물이자 어쩌면 현대미술과는 어울리지 않을법한 세운상가 안에서 은밀하고 비밀스러운 거래와 전시가 이루어진다.

이러한 가상의 설정은 2012년부터 현대미술에 대한 통계와 리서치를 지속해왔던 「THE DEFINITIVE BOOK」 작업을 전시로 구성하면서 현대미술을 둘러싸고 있는 부수적인 조건과 그 관계망을 작업의 주제로 끌어들이기 위한 장치로 작동한다. 미술작품 안에 담긴 세계와 개념, 표현(매체, 형식, 형태)보다는 작품이 전시되고 거래되기 위해서 필수불가결한 물리적 요소들을 작품의 영역으로 호출시킴으로써 미술작품에 대한 이면을 뒤집어보는 시도이다. 이러한 시도는 컬렉터라는 가상의 탈을 내세워 현대미술, 현대미술작품이라는 것이 존재하기 위해서 필요한 것이 무엇에 대한연구이자/고민이며/노력인가라는 작가로서의 질문으로 연결된다.

또한 세운상가 안의 비밀창고라는 가상의 설정은 세운상가 지구의 지정학적 성격과 공간적 특성을 탐미하고 감각적인 이해의가능성을 숙고하기 위함이다. 처음 방문하는 사람들은 길을 잃을 정도로 미로같이 복잡한 구조이지만 나름의 질서와 규칙을 관람객이 직접 경험하게 되면서 세운상가의 공간들과 그 분위기 자체가 관찰과 유미의 대상이 된다. 그리고 누군가의 사적인 공간을 방문한다는 전시의 컨셉은 일반적인 전시장의 공공적 성격을 배제시키고, 개인의 영역 안에서 일대일로 서로의 취향과 경험을 나누게 됨으로써 궁극적으로는 '반복 불가능한 지금 여기'를 만들 것이다.

화려하게 치장하는데 여념이 없는 도시인 서울 그 한복판, 시대를 거스르는 듯 퇴색하고 낡은 세운상가의 일상 풍경은 사람들 각자의 비밀스러운 사연을 감춰주기에 적절히 음침하고 바쁘며 무심하다. 현대의 미술도 이곳에서 만큼은 굳이 드러내고 싶지 않은 취미활동처럼 어쩌면 지극히 사적인 경험이고 인식이라는 의미에서, 작품을 둘러싸고 있는 물리적 요소들이 작품으로 소환되었을 때 발생하는 질문들을 던져본다. ■ 구수현

For years, many small businesses have coexisted in harmony around the Sewoon Shopping Mall of Jung-gu, a building that is representative of Seoul's modernization and rapid growth. Sewon Shopping Mall was built in the late 1960's and composed of eight residential and commercia lfloors, connecting to Daerim, Sampung, Inhyeon and Jinyang Shopping Malls along Cheonggye, Eulji-ro and Toegye-ro. Although the initial plan was to make as mall city within the city featuring gardens on rooftops, connecting to all shopping malls, and its own elementary school, in the end the shopping mall was regarded as a dry building lacking cultural facilities. Today, the first floor consists of video, sound and lighting stores and the second, third and fourth floors are used for storage. The floors above the fifth are for office and residential uses. Within the past 50 years, people who make use of this building have changed, where in current times they come to the building only to conduct business, rather than engage with others. This change may be due to the generation of people both living in and visiting the building, or because the weight of stresses in life has become heavier than in the past.  ● The 『A Collector's Secret Storages』project hypothesizes that a contemporary art collector secretly and confidentially collects art and conducts research on them inside small stores, storage rooms and offices of Sewon Shopping Mall. The idea of this hypothesis is inspired by the fact that some senior artists have secretly held their studio location in the area of Eulji-ro, and from my imagination where I fantasize that I once accidently met one of them on the street. ● A collector who does not like to be identified byname chose Sewon Shopping Mall for his exciting project. This decision as due to the fact that he believed Sewon Shopping Mall would serve as a perfect location for his artistic vision. Old shopkeepers, young trainees learning new skills, senior men coming to meet their friends and re-live old memories in the space, delivery men running busily along while picking up their phones, cafeteria ladies going around the building with trays of food on their heads, ascetics studying philosophy and religion, and students from an art college looking for new supplies pass through this space, and all the while, the people visiting the building have not paid much attention to each other. ● I am hoping that the imaginary set-up of the exhibition will help bring subsidiary elements surrounding contemporary art and those who appreciate to become familiar with my practice, where I am preparing a 「THE DEFINITIVE BOOK」 project. The book project is an accumulation of statistics and research of contemporary art that I have conducted since 2012 in preparation for an exhibition.  This is an attempt to inspire people to see artwork from a different viewpoint, through making use of indispensable physical elements to exhibit and trade artwork, concept sand techniques, particularly the medium, form, shape. This work based on an imaginary character which is identified as a collector aids the artist's question, of what research, concerns and efforts are made in producing contemporary art. ● The purpose behind holding the secret storages in Sewon Shopping Mall is because the space of the shopping mall enables viewers to examine aesthetic factors of geopolitical and spatial characteristics of the mall and consider possibilities of sensible interpretation. As audiences come to experience the different orders, rules and complicated structures of the building, as if they were walking through a maze, the spaces and atmosphere of Sewon Shopping Mall become subjects to examine, causing viewers to think about the aesthetic values in the work. Also, the concept of the exhibition, visiting one's private space, ultimately aims to create a sense of 'now'. This concept cannot be repeated in an exhibition space, neither can viewers have the same experience of being able to share each other's interests and experiences in a more private territory. ● The faded and old scenery of Sewon Shopping Mall contrasting against the heart of the bustling city of Seoul is so gloomy, busy and indifferent that it seems easy to hide secrets. From a contemporary art perspective, the work can also be appreciated for the very personal experiences that viewers have. This imaginary collector's secret hobby in Sewon Shopping Mall incites questions about the physical elements of the exhibit thrown onto viewers by the artist. ■ KOOSOOHYUN
