일상이 무한히 반복되며 순환한다. 그 안에서 많은 것들이 생성되고 또 소멸한다. 생성과 소멸의 과정 사이엔 무수히 많은 절차가 있고 나는 보이는 것들의 소멸된 모습과 소멸된 것들의 존재하는 모습을 상상해본다. 그리고 보이지 않는 것들에도 분명한 생(生)이 있음을 확신한다.

작업은 여기서부터 시작된다. 내 작업에서 불이란 소재는 아주 우연히 생성되었지만 필연적이었고 모든 것을 함축한다. 예전 인도여행 중 본 갠지스강의 풍경은 잊을 수 없다. 몸을 담그고 기도를 하는 사람, 작은 배에 올라 강물에 초를 띄우며 소원을 비는 사람, 빨래를 하는 사람, 물장구치며 노는 아이들, 죽은 자를 강물에 띄워 화장하는 모습까지… 몇 날 몇 일 강가에 앉아 본 적이 있다. 신성하다고 믿는 그 강을 따라 산 자와 죽은 자가 경계 없이 공존하는 자연스러운 모습은 기묘한 아름다움을 주었다. 몇 해전 할머니의 임종과 맞물려 아이를 출산하게 되었다. 두 과정은 다른 듯 같은 느낌을 줬고 갠지스강의 풍경이 중첩됐다.

내가 지나온 많은 시간과 사건, 인연들 그리고 현재 마주하고 있는 순간까지… 순차적인 듯 하지만 동시다발적이며 과거의 것들이 어떠한 형태로든 지금의 나에게 영향을 준다. 그건 한마디로 얘기할 수 없으며 정교하고 신비롭다. 불타서 아스러져가는 제주의 들불 축제를 보며 생각한다. 눈에 보이진 않아도 모든 게 사라진 건 아니라고. ■ 이영희

Life in its daily form is in constant repetition and circulation, and within that system many things come into existence and cease to exist, with innumerable procedures making up the process of creation and destruction. I imagine the destruction of things still in existence and the non-destroyed state of things obliterated. I also have a strong conviction that life exists even to those things that are not visible. ● This, is where my work begins. The subject of fire to my work is one that came about both by coincidence and by fate, and holds within it all that I wish to express. On a past trip to India, I was left with an unforgettable scene of the river Ganges, where for days I sat and watched the swarms of people immersing themselves in water for prayer, making wishes by floating away candles from a small boat, washing their clothes, children splashing and playing in the water, sending off their loved one in a floating funeral pyre, and so on. Regarded as holy by the people, the river presented a curiously beautiful sight, being a place where the living and the dead coexist in harmony without boundaries. A few years ago, it so happened that the birth of my child coincided with the death of my grandmother. The two events gave off an oddly different but similar feeling, and overlapped with the scenes of the Ganges. ● The long hours of time I have lived through along with the myriad of events and people I have come across, and even up to this very moment facing me now… things that appear to happen in sequence actually occur concurrently, and things of the past manage to influence in any shape or form the person I am today. This phenomenon cannot be summed up in simple terms and it is exquisite and magical. Watching the black disintegrating fields lit ablaze in the Jeju Fire Festival, I think to myself that disappearance indeed does not always equate to non-existence. ■ Lee, Young-Hee
