남겨질것과 생각되어지는 것들

대전 예술가의 집에서 진행하는 작가 이종서의 전시는 '남겨질 것' 과 '생각되어질 것'이라는 다소 무거운 주제를 담아내고 있다. 작가는 남겨질 것 그리고 앞으로 생각되어질 것들을 행복이라는 종착점에 닿고자 하는 열망과 함께 작업에 담아냈다.

작가는 무엇을 남겨질 것으로 생각하고 있는 걸까. 그는 남겨진 것들을 통해 남겨질 것들을 떠올렸다. 작업을 위한 재료 그리고 모티브가 되는 이미지들을 통해 작가 이종서는 가치와 본질을 잃어가는 현대 사회의 인간을 그려내고 있다. 이 사회에서 우리는 어떤 갈등을 하며 어떻게 살아가고 있는 걸까. 그는 작업을 통해 현대인의 다양한 모습을 표현하고자 했다. 수많은 갈등 속에서 방향성을 잃어가는 우리의 모습을 이종서는 앞과 뒤가 따로 존재하지 않은 인간의 형상으로 만들어 냈다. 앞으로 걸어가는 건지 뒤로 걸어가는 건지 그 방향성을 알 수 없는 인간 형상의 조각은 마치 우리의 자화상을 보는 듯하다. 보는 방향에 따라 뒷면이 앞면이 될 수도 있고, 그 반대가 될 수도 있다. 옆으로 곧 쓰러질 것처럼 위태롭게 서 있는 인간처럼 말이다. 갈수록 믿을 수 없는 순간들 이와 더불어 묶여진 마음과 응집된 고독은 하나의 감정선에서 비롯된 작업들로 나아간다. 과학의 발달로 인해 만남을 갖지 않더라도 우리는 소통이 가능해졌다. 우리의 몸과 마음은 자유로워 졌지만 반대로 우리의 마음은 오히려 묶여져 굳어버린 것 같다는 생각이 든다. 만남을 통한 소통이 없어진 것이다. 그야말로 고독의 시간이다.

하나의 진실을 정직하고 정확하게 바라보기 힘든 요즘이다. 대부분의 사람들은 어떠한 것을 이해하거나 판단할 때 그것의 전체를 파악하고 이해하기보다 단편적으로 이해하고 그것이 마치 전체를 대변하고 있는 듯 판단하고 확신할 때가 있다. 또 내가 경험하지 않은 것과 확인 되지 않은 말, 보이지 않는 상황에 천착하여 문제의 진실을 제대로 보지 못할 때가 많다. 이에 작가 이종서의 관심은 보여 지는 것과 생각되어지는 것들을 표현하는데 있다. 변형을 기반으로 한 작업들은 이미 생각되어지는 것으로 부터의 변화를 위한 것이다. 특히 잘못된 생각이 우리에게 어떤 모습 또는 현상으로 보여지게 되는지 작업을 통해 표현하고자 했다. ● 우리는 보이는 것이 생각하는 것을 앞설 때, 이를테면 무언가를 바라보고 지각하기 이전에 이미 생각되어진 것을 따라 생각하게 된다. 이는 대상을 보는 순간 나도 모르게, 인식할 사이도 없이 자연스럽게 이미 생각되어진 것에 도달하게 되는 경우이다. 그러다 보면 섣부르게 잘못된 생각, 이른바 선입견이라는 것을 통해 생각의 오류를 범하게 된다. 이때의 문제, 작가는 이 잘못 생각되어 진 것으로 부터의 변화를 바라는 마음에서 변형의 작업을 해왔다.

이종서 작가의 최근 작품들을 보자면 보는 각도에 따라 다르게 보여지는 작업들이 있다. 그 형태를 자세히 들여다보고 있으면 그것이 무엇을 표현하고 있는지 알 수 있다. 겉으로 보이는 차갑고 투박한 철재의 굴곡을 따라 막힌 형태들의 반복은 보는 위치에 따라 그 모습이 다르다. 측면에서 보여지는 곡선들의 반복 그리고 그 첨예한 경계에서 꺽여지는 면과 다시 투박한 철재가 빽빽하게 들어차는 면은 꽤 이질적으로 다가왔다. 하나의 작업으로 정면과 측면, 반측면에서 나타나는 이미지들은 하나같이 다르기에 어느 하나의 단면으로 이 전체를 이해할 수는 없다. 각각의 단면들이 전체 이미지를 대변하기 무리가 있다. 이는 아마 즉각적으로 사물이 눈에 보여지는 것과 그것을 인식하기 전에 미리 생각되어지는 것 때문에 생긴 충돌 때문일 것이다. 즉각적으로 한 대상에 대한 다양한 시각들이 동시다발적으로 부딪치지만 이내 그것은 하나의 이미지로 다가와 그것이 무엇을 표현하고 있는지 알아볼 수 있게 된다.

이종서 작가의 전작들은 규격화되고 정형화된 것 이를테면 사회 전반에서 겪게 되는 모든 것들을 사각형화된 형태로 받아들이고 그것을 체험하는 과정을 주제로 삼았었다. 사각의 평면에 압력을 가해서 구겨낸 형태들을 통해 사회적 모순과 야기된 문제들을 이야기하며 그것의 변화를 요구하는 작업들을 진행했다. 이처람 작가는 초기작부터 지금의 작업까지 변형을 통해 다양한 작업들은 진행해 오고 있다. ● 어떤 대상에 외부에 힘이 가해졌을 때 그 모양이나 상태가 변화되는 것을 우리는 '변형'이라고 한다. 변형은 보통 늘어나거나 줄어들고 휘거나 비틀리는 등의 모양과 상태를 말한다. 작업 재료가 가진 성질에 따라 작가는 다양한 변형을 시도하고 있다. 그가 하는 이러한 작업들은 인식의 변화를 통해 행복이라는 궁극적인 목적에 닿고자 하는 열망이 담겨있기 때문이다. 우리를 둘러싼 사회적인 문제 그리고 복잡한 인간관계들 속에서 가지게 되는 잘못된 인식들, 선입견에 따라 어떤 대상이나 상황을 제대로 인식하지 않거나 사고하지 못할 때가 많은데 작가는 이러한 문제들에 대해서 이야기 하고자 한다. 나아가 자신의 작업을 통해 우리의 단편적인 시각에서 벗어나 사고의 폭을 넓히기를 희망한다. ■ 김상

The previous works of the sculptor, Lee Jong Sheo has dealt with the standardized and formalized things such as the process of accepting and experiencing all the things in the society in the form of rectangular shapes. He tries to tell the social contradictions and problems taking advantage of the shapes crushed by applying pressure to the rectangular and plane materials and he has accordingly worked on art activities asking for resolving those social problems. ● What are 'the things to be left' for the artist, Lee Jong Sheo? He recalls the things to be left for the sake of the things that are left at the moment. Through the implementation of the material for artworks and the images which have the motives of the subjects, Lee Jong Sheo represents the modern human society losing the essential values. ● What kind of conflicts do we have any living in this society? He wanted to express the diversity of modern people through his artwork activities. With the intention to express the people living in the modern society losing the sense of direction in numerous conflicts, Lee Jong Sheo has created the shape of human which does not have distinguishable front and back sides.. His sculpture with a shape of human is unique. We do not clearly understand whether it is walking backward or forward and it seems as if we are looking at the self-portrait of ourselves in the modern society. In the eyes of the spectators, it looks like its front side could be backside of it or vice versa. Just like the human standing and posing risky who is about to fall with a thud. The moments that we cannot expect, our closed heart and extreme solitude develop into the works of art stemming from an identical emotional line. Due to the development of science, it is even possible that we can communicate with each other without meeting him in person. It has made our bodies and minds free. Conversely, however we feel like our hearts has become more cold-hearted and our mind became subject to restraint. The reason is that there is no active face-to-face communication. It is indeed a time of solitude. ● These days, it is difficult to uncover the truth in an honest and accurate view. Most people are likely to catch snatches of a fact when they are trying to understand it or make a judgment on it, rather than trying to identify or understand the whole parts of the fact, which makes them believe that it represents the whole things. In addition, they often fail to see the truth of the fact by delving deeper into something they have not experienced, unverified claims or an invisible situation. In this respect, the sculptor, Lee Jong Sheo is interested in representing the image of the things that are to show and the things that are to remember. His work which is based on the transformation of the material is to change its shape from the things which people already remember. In particular, he wanted to express how a wrong idea can have an influence on us through his works. ● When what we are looking goes beyond what we have in mind, for instance, we tend to make a judgment based on what we already had in mind before trying to realize and looking at a fact. This is the case in which we naturally make conclusion by our own judgment when we see a particular subject without correctly thinking about it or trying to recognize it. In the process, we will have the fallacy of hasty generalization from rhetoric prejudice. The artist has worked on his works based on the transformation of the material hoping to change the things which are already rooted in their mind. When we take a look at his latest works, some of them look different according to the eye angle of the viewers. Taking a close look at its form and shape, we will know what he intends to tell us. ● The appearance of the repeated shapes of the blocked steel material looking cold with a crude design looks different depending on the viewing position. The iterative curves shown in the side view and the surfaces filled with the twisted sides of steel material with a crude design on the sharp boundary looked quite unique and different to me. The images on the front, side and on the half-side are all looking different, which makes it impossible for us to understand the overall shape of the artwork by looking at only one side view of it. ● It is hard for each side of the artwork to represent its entire image. This might be caused from the conflict created by our pre-perception before recognizing it as shown in the eyes. Various perspectives on the object cause the conflict simultaneously. However, we can immediately understand its representative images and what it intends to express. His exhibition that will be hold in the near future has dealt with rather heavy subjects such as the things that are left, things that are to remember. The artist worked on his project hoping to realized those subjects to accord with his ideal, the destination of happiness ■ kimsang
