표준자연 Quality Control

이 세상 어디에도 없는 아름다운 당근들의 세계 ● 울리 씨는 키가 크고, 목소리가 낮고 웅얼거리는 느낌이 있습니다. 석현 씨는 키가 작고, 정확한 발음과 명쾌한 말투로 말합니다. 둘의 대화는 아마도 약간의 이질적인 분위기가 감도는 중에 천천히 각자 맴돌다 불쑥 교차하지 않을까 상상합니다. 이번 전시회의 이름 '표준자연｜Quality Control'가 정해진 과정이 그랬지요. 위스키와 부추전이 있었고, 모니터 두 대가 깜빡이고 있었고, 석현 씨는 자린고비 이야기를 했고, 울리 씨는 그 조금 전 제게 그의 작품 'Elephas anthropogenus(코끼리 상상도 연대기라고 불러도 되겠습니까?)'에 대한 설명을 막 마친 참이었습니다. 슈퍼마켓과 텔레비전, perspective, 아름다움, standard, food industry, factory, Quality control 같은 말들이 띄엄띄엄 지나가는데 울리 씨가 문득 'Standard of Nature?'라고 말했고, 석현 씨는 '어, 그것 좋다, 표준 자연!'이라고 반색했지요. 서로 모순되는 의미를 내포한 '자연'과 '표준'이 충돌하면서 '표준 자연'은 실체 없는 공허한 말이 되어, 그들의 화두, 현대 자본주의 사회가 자연의 산물을 취사선택하고 배제하는 현상을 가리키는 데 상당히 적확한 것이 되었다고 석현 씨는 흡족하고 울리 씨는 별 대꾸 없이 미소를 지었습니다. 저는 그 역설적인 단어 조합이 만들어낸 선언적이고도 정돈된 어감과 약간의 비아냥거리는 태도가 좋았습니다. 그리고 다음 날 오후 역시 전시회에 대한 회의를 하던 울리 씨가 불쑥 'Quality Control'을 내뱉었답니다. 천천히 고개를 갸우뚱거리던 석현 씨는 럼주를 한 모금 마신 후 한참 후에 '표준 자연'과 'Quality Control'을 나란히 놓습니다.

근본적으로 비슷한 자연관을 바탕으로 하면서도 사뭇 다른 장소들을 사뭇 다른 움직임으로 누벼온 두 예술가는 얼마 전 각자 모아온 '못 생긴 농산물'들을 한아름 안은 채로 마주쳤습니다. 그들은 진열대 위에 쌓인 매끈하게 매만져진 반질한 토마토 더미를 향해 묻습니다. 뻐드렁니 모양 토마토는 어디에 있습니까? 코끼리처럼 생긴 감자는 왜 없습니까? ● 생각해보면, 외모부적절로 비매품/불량품이 된 (그러나 너무나 당근 자체인) 당근도, 마케팅차원에서 지향하는 당근의 이상형을 구현해낸 당근(지금 당신 머릿속에 떠오른 바로 그 모양의 당근)도 자연 속에서는 아무런 차이도 동일성도 없는 제 스스로 충분한 개체들이지요. 그럼에도 현대 식품 산업의 비정하고 편협한 'Quality control(품질 관리)' 방식 안에서는 후자만이 옳은 당근이고, 그렇게 선택되고 만들어진 양파와 감자와 호박들로 현대인의 '표준 자연'이 구축됩니다. 두 작가는 이 실체 없는 '표준 자연'에 존재하지 않는, 다시 말해 '자연'에 실재하나 상품성미비라는 뭐라 대꾸하기 난감한 이유로 정체성을 부정 받고 우리의 일상과 시야에서 배제된 '형형색색'의 우아한 가지, 발랄한 토마토, 유머 넘치는 당근들-어쩌면 '예술'의 현실태인 듯 싶은-로 현대 식품 산업의 일그러진 오만함과 근본 없는 상술, 현대 사회가 자연에 대고 부리는 한심한 꼰대질을 상냥한 태도로 폭로하고, 현대인의 '아름다움'에 대한 빈약하고 편협한 관념의 가장자리를 툭툭 칩니다.

울리 베스트팔 작가의 'The Mutato-Archive'을 빼곡하게 채운, 한석현 작가가 오랫동안 수집한 '못생긴' 혹은 '특별한' 농산물들 앞에서 저는 탄식했습니다. 인스타그램, 텔레비전, 길거리가, 그러니까 일상이 갖은 '예쁜' 음식(이미지)들로 가득 찬 지금 여기, 그 장소에 사는 당신과 나의 손가락에 닿는 규격 안의 것들, 그 손가락들이 닿지 않는 곳에 은폐되고 폐기된 규격 밖의 어떤 녀석들, 제 의지로 제 모양새를 완성한 '참으로 예술적인' 그 아이들의 수, 본 적 없는 아름다움에 대해 말입니다. 그리고 그들의 흔적을 찾아 시장과 마트, 밭을 구석구석을 헤맨 두 작가–현대 '표준 남성'의 규격外 스타일을 가진 독특한-의 닳은 신발 뒤축 같은 것들도 상상했죠. 그러다 '나'는 그들의 오브제가 될 수 있을 것인가 아닐 것인가 생각하다 어느 쪽이든 그리 간단치가 않다는 느낌에 복잡한 심정이 들었는데, 일단은 천천히 울리 씨와 석현 씨가 내 놓은 저 아름답고 독보적인 생명체들 앞을 한동안 서성여볼 참입니다. ■ 나원

The hidden world of beautiful carrots ● Uli Westphal is tall and speaks quietly, murmuring gently. Han Seok Hyun is short and speaks pleasantly clearly. The conversation between the two artists may be somewhat disparate, but is intersecting at a sudden point. The title of this exhibition was decided in that way. When the two exchanged their ideas about the title, we had a bottle of whiskey and a dish of 'Buchu Jeon' (leek pancake) on the table. ● To find a proper title for the exhibition, we together spitted out words like 'supermarket and television,' 'perspective,' 'beauty,' 'standard,' 'food industry,' 'factory'. All of the sudden, Westphal said "How about Standard of Nature?" Han responded, "Ah! That's good! Standard of Nature!" Han seemed satisfied, saying that the contrast of the two words "Nature" and "Standard" perfectly reflected the way modern capitalism chooses which products of nature to accept or reject. Westphal smiled with a nod, but wasn't convinced yet. ● I personally liked how paradox the word combination "Standard of Nature" was. The next afternoon, we met again to discuss details of the exhibition. During the meeting, Westphal suggested "Quality Control" as an alternative. Han wrote down the two possible titles. After all they decided to combine them in Korean and English: 표준자연|Quality Control was born. The two artists have very similar views of nature, but they have been working in a little different way at different locations. Now, they encounter each other, both dealing with rejected agricultural produce. They ask us questions: "Where are the wonky tomatoes?", "Why don't we have potatoes that look like elephants?", "Or carrots that still look like roots?" ● It is true that the "improper-looking" carrots, which fail to hit the stores, and the "pretty-looking" ones (according to marketing standards) are both "proper-functional" objects in nature, without any substantial difference. However, the cold-headed and narrow-minded "Quality Control" system of the modern food industry decides that only the latter ones are the "right" carrots. Only these artificially selected vegetables establish the "Standard of Nature" for modern people. ● The two artists gently reveal the modern food industry's distorted arrogance and groundless commercialism that reject the diversity in nature: elegant multicolored eggplants, cheerfully patterned tomatoes or humorously wonky potatoes. They question modern societies prejudiced definition of beauty. ● I sighed deeply when I saw the "ugly" and "special" agricultural products collected by Han and Westphal. I lamented over how many "naturally artistic products" are being concealed and discarded and how pretty they actually are. We've never seen them, despite living in an era filled with "pretty" images of food on Instagram and television, or in the streets. At the same time, I imagine the two artists' shoe soles, worn-out from searching for those products everywhere from markets, supermarkets to fields. ● I will take time to see these uniquely beautiful creatures presented by Westphal and Han for a while. ■ Nawon
