제주의 숲 ● 김미경은 자신의 고향이고 그만큼 익숙한 제주의 자연, 숲과 바다를 촬영했다. 특히 어둡고 깊은 숲에서 번져 나오는 비릿한 냄새와 미묘하게 밝게 빛나고 형언하기 어려운 색채로 파득거리며 모종의 깊음과 더할 나위 없는 눅눅함이 몸을 섞는 바로 그 때의 공간, 그 순간만 얼굴을 내미는 느낌(빛과 색채)을 찍고자 했다. 대부분 새벽녘의 시간이자 비가 그치고 난 후의 맑고 깨끗한 순간이다. 그러나 엄밀하게 말해 그것이 무엇이라고, 어떤 느낌이라고 정확하게 말하기는 어렵다. (중략)

어느 날 작가에게 제주도 곶자왈의 숲 풍경들이 낯설고 기이하게 다가왔다. 작가는 불완전하더라도 자기 눈으로 숲을 보고 그에 관해 말하고자 한다. 여기서 그는 비로소 주체가 된다. 작가란 이처럼 스스로 보는 자이고 사물이나 세계에 부여된 관념이나 상식을 따르는 이가 아니라 그것을 물리친 자리에서, 여백 같고 공한 자리, 무에서 무엇인가를 보려고 노력하는 이다. 사실 나를 둘러싼 모든 것들은 낯설고 의아하고 생경한 타자들이다. 모호하고 낯선 타자에 대한 응시와 경험이란 그 순간의 자기 자신에 대한 감각, 존재에 대한 충실함과 연관되어 있고 그 '현재'에 사로잡힌 시간에 대한 개인적 정서의 구현에 관계되는 욕망이기도 하다. 세계는 주체에게는 늘 수수께끼다. 이해하기 힘든 그러나 분명 자신의 내부에서 감지하는, 더구나 욕망하는 힘에 의해 그 대상을 다시 주의 깊게 들여다보고 이를 사진촬영 했다. 그는 바로 지금 내 앞에 있다는 그 현재라는 시제에 만난 것, 어떤 것이 이 순간 바로 내 앞에 있는 현전의 체험에서 문득 낯선 느낌을 받는다. 익숙하고 일상적인 것들이 어느 순간 낯설게 다가옴을 느낀 것이다. 그리고 그것들은 강한 힘을 발산한다.

낯설음이란 특정한 외부의 경험에 의해 생성된 내적인 심리상태를 지칭한다. 순간 자신이 보고 있는 지금의 풍경, 대상을 의심한다. 자신이 보고 있고 알고 있는 것만이 전부는 아닐 것이다. 또한 눈에 보이는 것만이 세계는 아니다. 우리는 보이지 않는 것, 유령과 함께 한다. 일상의 시간 속에서 느닷없이, 불현듯 나타나는 것을 만난다. 현실세계에 비이성적이고 신화적인 세계가 순간 침입한 것이다. 순간 현실에 금이 간다. 보이는 세계 위로 또 다른 세계가 엉기고 들러붙고 퍼져나간다. 어쩌면 바로 그런 것들을 찍고자 하는 것이 김미경의 사진인지 모른다. 작가의 사진은 깊고 어두우면서도 선명하고 놀라운 빛과 색채로 뒤척이는, 생성적인 제주 숲의 신비스러운 자태, 그 숲이 뿜어내는 영기와 놀라운 매혹, 그리고 보이지 않는 유령 같은 비가시적 존재의 자취를 힘껏 낚아채고자 한다. ■ 박영택

Kim, Mikyung has photographed the forests and seas, the nature of Jeju. She wanted to capture, especially, the moment in which deepness and extreme dampness mingle together, lively shaking with unexplainably-mysterious, bright colors and the gradually-spreading aroma from the dark and deep forests. The impression (light and color) of the moments is what the photographer wanted to capture, the glimpse of nature's face. Most works depict crystal clear moments after the rain stopped in the early morning hours, but it is difficult to say precisely what the impression is or what it feels like. (...) ● One day, sceneries of Gotjawal in Jeju island came to her like a stranger shrouded in mystery. She decides to speak about the forests she sees, even though it cannot be perfect. Here she becomes the subject. An artist is, like this, the one who sees in person; the one who tries to see something from 'Mu' (which seems like an empty space); not following the common sense, but pulling away from it. In fact, all things around me are 'other beings' that we are unfamiliar, strange, and new to. Gazes at and experiences with 'the others' are related to the sense of oneself and the truthfulness to existence. Also, they are the desires related to the realization of personal emotions about the time that was occupied by 'present'. The world is always full of questions. Through the power which is hard to be understood, but is felt inside us, the photographer captured the objects by carefully looking into them through the power of her desire. In those experiences, there were moments she met with 'the presence' suddenly. These are the moments you feel sudden unfamiliarity to something very ordinary. They emanate great power. Unfamiliarity refers to a status of internal mind evoked by external experiences. That moment you suddenly doubt the scene or the object right in front of your eyes. Surely, the world is not limited by what you see and know. Things as they appear are not what they are. We coexist with unseen things like ghosts. We suddenly meet unexpected appearance of things in our daily lives. It is as though the real world is invaded by an irrational and mythological world. That is the moment when the real world cracks. Upon the tangible world, another world sticks, gets entangled, and spreads. Perhaps, these moments and scenes are what Kim, Mikyung wants to capture in her photographs. Her works are composed of deep, dark, clear, and marvelous lights and colors. The photographs are mightily catching the mysterious appearance of the forests of Jeju, powerful spirituality and fascination, and invisible ghost-like shadows. ■ Park, Young-teik
